This mourning gecko setup has been a pain. This was a stupid mistake by myself by simply not checking everything before switching it on... Lesson well learnt. This mourning gecko setup is very nice but the electrical nightmare is what led us to this mistake. 5 plugs it takes to run this mourning gecko bioactive setup.

Mourning gecko eggs are saltwater tolerant, I'm not sure if that transfers to fresh water, but don't give up on them! There's a chance they're okay.

That's a huge bummer but hopefully, they survive. Showing things that haven't worked for you is so helpful for others. My 2 mourning geckos are only a few months old but because of this, I am considering putting the UVB bulb near the front to encourage them to lay eggs in a more accessible area.

I thought mourning gecko eggs were resistant to saltwater. Some theories of how mourning geckos got to Hawaii is that they can survive in saltwater. So I would assume that being in freshwater wouldn't effect the embryos much if some of their ancestors eggs somehow floated on some drift wood through the ocean all the way to Hawaii.

Thats not a bio active set up. A biologically active set up is literally just a tank with natural substrate that houses isopods and springtails tails etc plants is just a planted setup message me and ill show you my bio active chahoua ,tokay and green eyed forest gecko set ups maybe even my basilisk and frilled dragon set ups. Also youre overlaoding your electrics am extension lead usually is 13 amp( 3000 watts) standard whether it has 4 sockets or 10 it will also depend how many available sockets you have in that room to as each room has a ring of wires for that room its usually 13 amp per wall socket ( not sure about doubles) most of the times electrical fires start in the walls get an electrical engineer round to work out all your volts watts etc so you don't burn your house down. In my front room i have 3 enclosures spilt between 4 extentions into 4 different sockets in the wall and up stairs 3 split between 3 extensions. Im assuming that's a standard terrace house or semi detached and im assuming you have 4 wall sockets in that room maybe 6-8 if you have any double sockets not here to troll but I'd say that would concern me. P.s make sure your fire extinguisher is made for electrical fires too. You can get the cut off extensions id get those they cut of if the wire gets to hot and just get a surge protect socket you plug into the wall from b&q for £10. Also remember things that heat up use more for example a kettle uses 3000 watts so if you plugged a kettle into an extension lead you couldn't plug anything else in or its overloaded.

I got a Hawaiian mourning gecko 2 days ago, beautiful bioactive terrarium set up. Then go to the shop a few days later, one of the employees was a super by the books reptile keeper and the other employees were a lot more know the basics, everything doesn't have to be exact, you don't have to feed them in bowls they can hunt themselves. The advice from the more anal employee was that the dirt and moss based substrate needed to be coconut fiber. Attempting to add a layer of coconut fiber as a surface level substrate required me to take apart my entire tank. I had also not seen the gecko in a while, so I sifted through the substrate trying to find her. I though I saw her ambush hunting and burrowing with tunnels. She must have escaped while I was destroying her the beautiful ecosystem I built for her to put in some stupid count fiber to conform with the way you are 'supposed to' keep mourning geckos. Mourning geckos are adaptable and live around humans, even in their houses in the wild, They can handle some dirt and moss substrate. Don't get me started on all the stupid supplements I was convinced to buy to make sure they have perfect nutrition. Seems like the human supplement scam. Maybe if you are keeping geckos in a sterile environment, but there are enough chains of the ecosystem to circle all the required nutrients for the gecko into an insect the gecko can eat. I was also told to regulate their food intake strictly with premixed baby food looking stuff, to keep the feeder insects separately and feed them a specific supplement, as well as coat them before feeding the gecko. This philosophy of regulating every part of the gecko's life is completely incompatible with the philosophy of a self sustaining fully nutrient circulating bioactive terrarium. I can add the feeder insects directly to the bioactive terrarium, springle some gut loading for the insects to eat so the gecko gets ins nutrition, open my window to get UVB light or just sprinkle the calcium/vitamin D supplement around a food source for the insects so the vitamins get stuck to the insects before the gecko eats them most of the time. These geckos survive in the wild by hunting, they don't get fed by bowls. I want to allow the mourning gecko to actually feel like it is in the wild, not in captivity. But now because I took some horrible advice I have no idea where my mourning gecko could be. Can't find her anywhere. I'll make a trail of food back to the rebuilt tank or maybe try to rig up some traps, to catch her but I have a feeling I will never find her. Nothing ever goes right. Everyone has different opinions on how to raise geckos and everyone things there way is the only way. Open your minds to alternatives and don't buy all the supplements and other uncessary equipment pushed on you by corporations tryng to create perceived needs where none exists.

I definitely agree with some of what you're saying (ie. allowing them to hunt fruit flies or other feeder insects around their enclosure is fun for them). I hope you ended up finding your gecko! I love bioactive terrariums and have a mourning gecko enclosure and a crested gecko enclosure that are both bioactive. Unfortunately even a bioactive vivarium/terrarium isn't exactly like the wild: in the wild they get UVB from the sun. In captivity, you either need to provide d3 in supplement form (ie. by dusting their insects or feeding them gecko food with d3 in it) OR you need a basking lamp that emits UVB, which produces d3 in their skin. UVB is filtered out by glass, which means opening a window isn't going to give them any d3. It's also why if you're going to use a lamp instead of supplements, you need to put it on the top of the enclosure shining down through mesh (should have a mesh screen on top, not glass). Then calcium is another issue: in nature, geckos will lick mineral deposits that contain calcium. The insects they eat will be varied and some contain a lot more calcium compared to most feeder insects (an exception is black soldier fly larvae which are very high in calcium and are a great feeder for any type of gecko). Fruit flies don't contain much calcium naturally and they are the most common feeder for mourning geckos, so dusting them with calcium is important (you can then let them go in the enclosure so the geckos can hunt them down). The reason why it's so important for mourning geckos to get enough calcium and d3 is because they lay so many eggs that are huge compared to their body size. The constant egg laying uses it up quickly. They actually have little calcium sacks on the underside of their neck that you can see through their skin! You can give them a little cup of powdered calcium which they will sometimes lick from and regulate their own calcium. It should have added d3 if you don't have a basking light with uvb, and without d3 if you have a uvb light. Crested gecko diet (I use repashy grubs n' fruit), the powder you mix with water, is excellent for mourning geckos. It's not very expensive because the mourning geckos eat such a tiny amount: I paid around 15 bucks Canadian for a bag of it around 6 months ago and I still have most of it left. Most keepers seem to recommend alternating between crested gecko diet and feeder insects (fruit flies, tiny crickets, flour beetle larvae, etc. dusted with calcium) for best health. It contains lots of nutrients they would get in the wild, but don't get with captive feeder insects. Personally I also give my geckos bee pollen from time to time (it's like 5 bucks at the grocery store) because they eat pollen and nectar in the wild. But bee pollen is completely optional! Finally, mourning geckos need to be in groups, ideally 3 or more. In the wild they congregate and are quite social, and they prefer living with each other in captivity too. You'll hear them quietly chirping at each other at night; it's super cute :) You just need to give them lots of little places to hide so they can chill separately. The substrate doesn't really matter much because mourning geckos are arboreal; they spend most of their time up in branches and on plants. I only ever see mine on the ground when they're hunting insects. Also it's a good idea to put the gecko in a temporary cup if you're going to be moving stuff around in their vivarium. And generally make sure there are no holes they can get through: they are escape artists! I had a gecko escape once and thankfully I found her a few days later! I don't blame you for not knowing this stuff before you got the gecko, and it sounds like they gave you bad advice at the pet shop! But there are very good reasons for supplementing with d3 or uvb, plus calcium, and feeding CGD. It costs money upfront, but you use so little a container of calcium or CGD will last a long time.
