This is so helpful and interesting! I've been researching leopard geckos actually- but I wasnt sure if it would be okay to only have a uvb on one corner/half of the tank! But since they're crepuscular and not quite "baskers" anyway I feel like this especially would let them choose the amount!

We've been using full spectrum grow lights in our live terrariums. They're pricy, but are great! The ones we've found are adjustable; going from 10-100% emittance and cover a large area. I would love to get one of those uv meters and see exactly where it falls.

We use a combo uvb heat bulb with a large lamp cover, covers about a third of the tank, in the other corner a regular basking light, smaller, have lots of shade spots under basking areas. works out very well!

Thanks for all the recent content you have been putting out, its invaluable as usual. Really loved the comparison you did with the deep heat projector vs the pro rep one. In regards to this Bearded dragon care guide, I have done something similar with my Leopard gecko's set up, she has a fully bioactive 4ft set up, with various basking rocks for belly heat, all different temps, I have noticed that she has been far more active , and has been making far more use of her enclosure especially her uvb lighting as she is able to regulate her intake far more easily.

Thank you SO much for using a solarmeter to measure your UVB! So few reptile keepers bother with those, maybe they don't even know about it. Learning where your dragon likes to be helped determine what strength of UVB bulb to get - T8s aren't as strong as T5s, for example. I have benefitted from that FB group for quite a while, "REPTILE LIGHTING", SUPER helpful!! Great work on this video, just subbed, my friend!

@@proudneanderthal1843 I feel they are worth it. Had I not had one, my male dragon would have lived out the life of his UVB fixture without me figuring out that the reflector was installed upside down and he was getting virtually zero uvb from an expensive Arcadia bulb I had bought. If one is going to keep reptiles that need UVB, then a solarmeter needs to be part of the supplies bought.

It’s funny, around 4 min mark when you drew the proposed preferred setup, that’s exactly how I cut out a piece of sheet Pvc to act as a top to hold my fixtures in place. However, I angled the light instead of sending heat straight down. The angle disperses heat more evenly across the basking rock which gives different temperature gradients as you go further from the heat lamp, but is all under UV and give my beardie a temp choice from 90-110

So basically, put your UVB lights across the short side of the hot side of the enclosure, corner to opposite corner. That will arguably save a lot of money since he UVBkits will be shorter.

Exo terras old hoods were originally similar to this, although it was designed for using only with certain bulbs, it's not exactly a new concept, however some mentioned problems with their hoods and they have been discontinued, personally I think it's a good idea, especially for such like leopard geckos, as they often do come out to sleep under the heat before it goes off, but it's often hard to garentee they are getting any uv as often the lights end up out for the night before they decide to get up.
@NORTHERNEXOTICS2 жыл бұрын
With the exo terra yoy can only use the coil uv lamps and they don't give off much uv at all
@janef0022 жыл бұрын
Yep the compact tops only take the coil bulbs, but the old tops take tubes, currently have one of the old tops that takes tubes and didn't realise it took certain pin halogen bulbs as well, only when looking in to it did I find out, as I went looking for another top, however like I said, they discontinued making these and could only find one in America that would have cost a bomb to get.

I just got a bearded dragon maybe a month ago he’s about 12ish weeks old I think . The pet store gave me estimated weeks when I got him but he got big fast they said . him and his brother were caged together and he was a lot bigger and he is the sweetest . He loves kids and he loves everyone he’s never pushed his beard out or opened his mouth or even bit he’s just so loving and he loves to cuddle on you shoulder but I was told what buy at the pet store and I was told to buy a 40 gallon tank eventually you have to upgrade to a 70 gallon or 120 but I was told to buy a double lamp one side is uvb and ones a heat but I ended up having to buy 2 more lamps because his temp wasn’t high enough it was 70s - low 80s . Now i have two heat lamps 100w and a 50 w with a uvb idr what w it is and then I have a red lamp I run during the night for him so his enclosure stays 75-80 under the lamp and like 70 ish on the non lamp side . But he has a lot of hides and we’ve bought him a lot of rock things for his enclosure all have a hide under them and we got him a tree thing but idk if I’m doing it wrong or not now

I use a 150 watt basking light and Arcadia UVB on a timer in the daytime and a small ceramic heat emmiter on a thermostat at night just to make sure it doesn't drop below 70°. I'm upgrading to a 4 x 2 x 2 now and will move up to a 200 watt if needed.

If youre using a t5 with a heatlamp like you draw you are missing uva which is a big part of sunlight. I use a thermalzoopro with a flood lamp which gives of ira-b, 2x 6% which gives me a uvi of 6,5 at 40cm distance and a philips cdm-r metal halide which gives a really good amount of uva and ira-b. All lamps are producing visible light. I havent got a spectrummeter so i cant show you the spectrum but Frances Baines showed it in her podcast on KZbin. You have to point the sensor from your solar meter to the uvb source. It gives you false readings if you dont :)
@NORTHERNEXOTICS2 жыл бұрын
Uva is abtained via the heat lamp. Recommended a halogen . Sorry I must have been slightly unclear in the video. I'm curious. Do you have a solar meter? When I got the thermal zoo pro after bedding in the 6% lamps for 100 hours I got a 6.5 uvi but at 20 cm. At 40 cm I was getting less then 1.5uvi
@Jordispiano2 жыл бұрын
@@NORTHERNEXOTICS Halogeen bulbs only produce a small amount of uva, it doesnt come close to sunlight. If got the 6.2r and the 6.5r solar meter. Im planning on getting the 4.2 aswell. If got 2x 6% so they overlap which gives me double the amount of uvi. One gives me a uvi of 3.2 on 40cm distance. I dont know if its correct but i live in Europe and we have a 230 volts system, maybe its different in america the uvb output?
@NORTHERNEXOTICS2 жыл бұрын
It doesn't overlap and double. The only way to strengthen the uvi like that is a more reflective reflector. Maybe the voltage does change but I've just looked on the arcadia website. It says at 30 cm it's 4.5uvi so at 40 it'll be less then that after the lamps are burnt in. John Courtney Smith head of science and development at arcadia said on a podcast that the halogens are the best for providing uva . Better then the uvi led lamps that are out now at least. That's why the thermal zoo pro comes with a dhp and a halogen
@Jordispiano2 жыл бұрын
@@NORTHERNEXOTICS It does overlap coz i can see it with the solar meter. When you have 2 uvb sources 1 gives you a uvi of 1 and 1 gives a uvi of 2 you will have a uvi of 3 for example like you see when you look at it with a sectrum meter. Every uv lamp is different so the output will never be the same even when they have the same brand and type so there is no possible way to say what uvi you will get without measuring the specific lamp. I dont know what a uvi lamp is becauls uvi is uvb in the 280 to 300 nanometer spectrum. That wavelengt is the wavelengt that makes d3 synthese possible. Uvi is just an index of it. If you want to know the whole spectrum of uvb you need to measure it with a spectrum meter or a solar meter 6.2 which gives you readings in microwatts per square cm. So i guess what you mean bij uvi lamp is just a uvb lamp. Halogen lamps give out uva but its impossible to tell if its enough becauls at the moment there are no studies done on uva, the only refference is to compare the sunlight spectrum which is very difficult becuals it changes by time. For example in the morning sunlight gives a different spectrum than in mid day. But for now what we know is that sunlight gives a lot more uva compared to the whole spectrum than what halogen bulbs give if you have the correct uvi for a bearded dragon in this case. Its different in different wattages but it doesnt come close to sunlight. This is also what Frances Baines explaines in her podcast. You can also see it in the spectrums she showed with different lamps. Those spectrums are compared to average sunlight spectrums. A combination of t5, flood and philips cdm par 38 will give you the best spectrum compared to average sunlight. The next step is leds, in the future its all we need. They will giva irb, ira, proper vissible light, uva and uvb with a good spectrum but thats far in the future. Many studies has to be done first.

Hmmmm seems like mercury vapor bulbs would be the way to go then if you want to just have one thing to change.... though if you have a pvc enclosure like mine that's not ideal because it traps heat so well.... the enclosure old get up to 130-140 or more and on a hot day that could go even higher.... I wish there was a more universal way of controlling this stuff so that wasn't too crazy expensive or out of reach. All the good reptile stuff seems like it's sold mostly in the UK...

My whole enclosure is lit up and full on uvb while heated on one side and cool on the other. This is nothing new. Its new if you do the bare minimum for your dragon. For me i go the whole nine yards and i also used common sense because google and care guides are still terrible. So updated channels are your best bet if you lack common sense. Get a better superior uvb bulb that fits the length of the whole enclosure and add reflector tape to the hood because most don't have it. Your spectrum will be better and your dragons will be spunky and vibrant.
