Short People could probably still be released today. It was an anti-prejudice song that sarcastically mocked short people to point out how ridiculous prejudice is. And before someone answers "but people don't understand sarcasm nowadays", they didn't back then either, there was backlash to that song and Newman received threats, back when it was much more effort to threaten someone than a lazy twitter post from your phone. There were also attempts to get it banned. I'm guessing NL was jokingly pretending to think it's genuine, because some of the lyrics make it clear it isn't.

Of course people are not obligated to justify their dislike/like of different media, but conversations about media with no content whatsoever are just pointless then. I have witnessed too many interactions that just go like this: A: Did you see ? B: Yes, I liked it. What do you say about ? A: I hate it. What did you think about ? B: It was ok. Opinion on ? Ad infinitum. Come on, you have to give me more than that.

Every so often, we're reminded of the roots of internet discourse. Musical disagreements à la "I hate the bands that you like" is one of them. I find the song to be boring but nostalgic. Maybe a 6/10. Classic bit, though. Maybe an 8/10.

Neither Drops of Jupiter or Hey Soul Sister is the worst Train song. Drive By is the worst Train song. I agree that Hey Soul Sister is subtle malevolence.

I have a high threshold for bland early-mid 00’s adult contemporary music to the point where I actually quite like drops of Jupiter and can stand Hey Soul Sister, but the fact that drive by has the 3 hit combo of “just a shy guy looking for a two ply hefty bag” directly into “to hold my-y-y-y-y-y (6 syllables on ‘my’) love” followed by “they don’t like it sue me, mm the way you do me” pushes it past what I can tolerate.

@@EviIPaladin It is the sort of novelty song I guess I could imagine my dad listening to but I just don't have the same nostalgia for that song. It's like if "grandma got run over by a reindeer" took itself too seriously.

I feel like a lot of the disconnect between NL and chat on this is just age difference. Like someone who likes Slint might have a positive impression of Hey There Delilah if it came out when they were 10.

What we learned today is that music, like any form of art, is highly subjective. I'm not going to bat for Train but I don't see how DoJ is any worse than every single top 10 most played songs in radio at any given time.
