As a fan of beat em ups, i didnt really enjoy fist hell that much. The walk speed feels a tad too slow, the jab range uncomfortably short, theres no back attack and the recovery from running attacks is very big. Theres also none of the more modern beat em up mechanics that have really improved the genre like juggling enemies or quick standing.

What I can't stand is how clunky the doubletap dash/hop inputs feel and how easy it is to misinput special when you want to buffer a jumpkick instead. It makes avoiding damage feel way more grueling than it should.

A lot of people don't realize that the entire game of UFO50 is sort of "role playing" as games that would have came out in the 70s and 80s thus not being exactly good quality and have all the nuances + improvements of games of similar genre that are more better that came out later in time. This is why the games have a bit of backstory and history in their descriptions as well as release dates, when in reality these games never actually existed before. Mooncat is a great example because there really is only 2 reasons to purposely design the game such awful controls. Either the developer is incompetent (not true) or maybe the idea is to put you back into your childlike state playing a video game for the first time not knowing how to use the controls because you never played a video game before.

@@vcraine I think that's doing a disservice to the quality of most of these games as almost all of them are incredibly well designed and are vast improvements on the the games of the era they're based on. Even Mooncat, which is designed incredibly unorthodox, has very responsive and snappy controls that flow well with the level design. Fist hell in particular stands out as a game that does not feel like it iterates on its origins. It also doesn't help that 90 percent of the beat em up genre constantly trying to be nostalgic for time when it was most popular. So, what's the point of being a game purely for nostalgia in a genre that has nothing but nostalgia bait? This is purely a critique of fist hell in particular. UFO 50 as a whole package is still probably my favorite game of the year

Grimstone and Fist Hell are kind of duds for me for being 'old game but sorta worse' whereas mooncat is not a game you would have played back. Rock On! island is a tower defence, which they didn't really have back then; party house is a deckbuilder, ect.
