Not stupid. You're 100% right. I've noticed he seems to often just trust that his opponents aren't leaving their pieces en prise. Always check for captures. Don't trust your opponent to guard material.

In the secod game, 2....Nf6 is a bad way to protect the pawn, you always decline the queen's gambit by protecting your d pawn with another pawn - this way your knight gets kicked to a bad position.

You know, the name of the opening displays whether or not your opponent has studied it for hours. Just because it says Sicilian defense pin variation doesn't mean the opponent knows what that is, and if it says the opening is some gambit you've never heard of, they probably just blundered a pawn. They didn't memorize a 4-hour KZbin series about destroying opponents who accept the Herrstrom gambit, they probably just didn't see you can take it.
