I think the turtle was also affected by the change to how held foods are distributed, so maybe it can't give melon to something that already has melon, just like how walrus can't give peanuts to things that already have peanuts. NL might have accidentally made the right play.

I usually just place another on top so it recover to full health +1, and slowly try to level it up. I only use defensive foods when I have zero manatees in the shop for a long time and it's the only way to save it

I think there's a place just past al dente but before mush, where the pasta structurally holds well, and serves as a great sauce vehicle, while then basically dissolving as you chew. Doing it that way is nice sometimes.

Exactly, thank you, fellow past al dente enjoyer. Al dente's great for sauceless pasta dishes, but if you're relying on sauce for flavour you want to boil it just that tiny bit longer so it allows the sauce to imbue it with flavour.
