I am in Calgary, Alberta and I grow in containers. Plastic storage totes, plastic barrels that I cut in half, plastic grocery totes, a laundry hamper, tires, 2 gallon and 5 gallon buckets, and large plant pots. I elevate them on 2 x 4's so they are off the ground because I have my garden on grass and find grass sprouting at the bottom of my containers trying to come up to the top. Elevating them stops this from happening. Our last frost according to Farmer's Almanac is June 17th, but according to everyone I talk to they say here we can start during the May long weekend. When I look it up our zone is 3b/4a. I also keep track of the night time temperatures. If it rarely goes below 0C then I will plant the cold hardy vegetables that can take a bit of frost. When it rarely goes below about 10C then I plant out the cold hardy but can't take frost, vegetables. And, when it hovers around the upper teens and 20C plus, it is then safe to plant the warmer plants. I start 90% of them in my own greenhouse that I made with two black resin shelves wrapper on 3 sides with aluminum foil and a clear plastic tablecloth. I purchased some T5 lights, one for each shelf and it cost me alot less then a store bought greenhouse. That's my story and I am sticking to it! Hahaha! Hope this helps those that are struggling. Love your channel Ashley! Keep up the great job your are doing.

From Vancouver, British Columbia. We bought a townhouse Fall 2019., Fortunately being a corner unit, we got some extra space to enjoy gardening. As a beginner, last summer, I learnt a few things- its good to have a theme to your garden in small space which synchronizes everything. Using vertical gardening on fences and railings and giving your garden a personal touch. Investing in flowering vines. And also, pruning dead leaves and flowers ( specially annuals) timely maintains the beauty of your garden. Lastly, keeping one color for all the pots in the garden. This year I have kept all my pots in earthen-red color, trust me it gives an amazing look to the garden.

We're in usa winter zones 5-6 and summer zone 7, and we grow directly in the ground and love to grow strawberries. Just today we dug another trench garden bed, which will have peppers, that are waiting in the window for this time of year. We started cold plants in the first week of march, but that depends on when the first heatwave of the year is. Most importantly, we leave fall plants in the ground so we get delicious perennial food before the seeds sown in early spring even come up.

Hamilton Ontario cdn zone 6a: All Cool weather plants out and the garden’s are full! Seeded carrots and transplants over the last weeks include... Peas, lettuce, green onions, bulb onions, turnip, pac choy, leeks, radish, beets, mustard greens! Some warm weather plants started inside include... Tomato, peppers, some annual flowers and celery. Soon to start inside cucumber, mouse mellon (cucamellon) and more annuals. Tips: in the fall I add compost to top off my raised beds and put landscape fabric over top for the winter, it’s breathable and let’s water through but keeps squirrels from digging. In very early spring I cover the beds with white/ clear tarps to melt the snow and warm the beds then remove the landscape fabric underneath. I still have the tarps on held up with wire hoops and posts and plant transplants under the cover. Always check the 14 day weather, looks like the last hard frost was last night so the tarps will be replaced with fabric row covers. Blueberries, raspberries and others are breaking dormancy and have cut the lawn now three times. Emptied three composers and sorted the finished from the not so finished and amended my potting soil with it. After some false spring weather Hooray looks like the real deal is just around the corner!

I'm in Belgium ( zone 8b ) For tomatoes, eggplants and pepers we wait until the weather predictions say the temperature won't go below 10°c and then we start hardening. Also something I started doing is: pepers and tomato plants can be kept in a large planter and when the temp starts dropping between 13-10°c you do a really good trim and put inside don't overwater and keep between 10 and 15°c, the plant hybernate. In februari you place them in a warmer spot ( living room temp) and they'll start growing again. Don't forget to feed them ! This way you'll get flowers and vegetables much Faster.

Ontario Zone 6b. I transplanted my lettuces on April 20 this year, and they're doing great. We got some light frosts in late April (a week after transplanting) and then no more frosts. May was pretty mild - the coldest it got was 5.5C, so they started growing quite well in May. I've harvested many outer leaves, and they're now starting to form heads. They're all romaine lettuces. I also direct sowed the same romaine lettuces in late March. They were high density sowings, and not thinned. Probably 25-40 plants per square foot... It's a dense forest of leaves now. Not going to get any heads from those but still a lot of "loose leaf" lettuce. The plants are smaller than the transplanted ones that are spaced 8-10 inches apart, but the amount of biomass per sf is probably just as high because there's so many more plants. I also had some curly leaf lettuce that went to seed last summer, and I tossed the seed heads in the compost, applied the compost in the fall, and they started popping up in various spot in April. Those wound up reaching a similar size as the transplanted romaine lettuces in the same amount of time, so I'm thinking there might not be that much of an advantage to starting seeds indoors in my area. Because there were only a few seeds that germinated, they weren't as closely spaced as the high density sowings, so the individual plants were able to get larger.

USDA zone 4b. Been in garden dividing rhubarb. Got 8 new plants going good. It's been abnormally warm this spring. Pulled mulch off garlic early April, leaves are 7 inches tall already. Requested my onion plants coming from Dixondale farms in Texas to speed up shipping. They got email and shipped. Just got 2 inches of snow yesterday! UGH! You dont ever talk about onion plants, just seeds or sets. I have found planting those little plants produce a superior bulb in size and storage. Please do some experiments including seeds, bulbs and plants for comparison

Hello!

Hmm. So my neighbour has been letting me keeping my plant starts in his greenhouse. Currently the temperatures there are around 17-27C in the afternoon when the sun is shining on it, and 7-12C at night since he doesn't heat it much. I kept my basil and ground cherry seedlings in there overnight but I've noticed they weren't growing much (especially the basil, ground cherry is still growing a bit). I was about to leave my canteloupe, watermelon, cucumber, and zucchini seedlings out there at night for the first time too but sounds like I should bring them to the basement real quick?... Are 5-10C nights really so bad for these plants? They're generally recommended to plant around late May or so here (zone 6b)? Maybe even mid-May? But we still get 5-10C nights around that time of year from time to time.
@Lochness193 жыл бұрын
hm ok so last year these were the last 10 nights where temperatures were 10C or below. May 13: 3C May 14: 4C May 15: 6C May 16: 10C May 17: 7C May 18: 6C May 19: 6C May 20: 10C May 21: 10C May 31: 9C Almanac.com says to wait until nights are consistently 10C+ for basil so I guess I was pushing it with my basil seedlings. So I guess once we're around May 20 we should be more or less in the clear for those kinds of cool nights (just check the long-range forecast I guess). Almanac.com seems to be recommending that I plant my watermelon, canteloupe, cucumber, tomato, pepper, green beens and zucchini. They don't have anything on ground cherries so not sure about those. I dunno... my basil hasn't wilted or anything, it just hasn't grown much in the last few days since being exposed to those cooler nights in the greenhouse (probably 7-9C). Should I prepare to start a new batch of basil then? The slow cooker method has been working pretty for me to start seedlings fast (germinate them between wet paper towels in a plastic bag on low yogurt setting - approx 30-32C I think?), it even worked for my root parsley and got it to germinate in only 9 days (despite parsley generally preferring cooler temperatures)
@GardeningInCanada3 жыл бұрын
Oh that’s a really nice neighbour! You have a really nice selection this year for seedling as well.
@GardeningInCanada3 жыл бұрын
Those nighttime temps ares that cold for those plants. If it was a lot of pepper and tomatoes I would be more concerned.
@Lochness193 жыл бұрын
@@GardeningInCanada Tomatoes are more sensitive to 5-10C than basil, melon, cucumbers and zucchini? For tomatoes and peppers I was going to buy them from a nursery but I guess I should still wait until mid-late May for those then? I think when my family was growing tomatoes and I was a kid they often planted them in early-mid May when we could get cool (but not freezing) nights and they were often growing slowly at first but from what I remember they still picked up the pace in late May.
@ontariogardening3 жыл бұрын
You should be more than good to plant now if you haven't already. I am also in Ontario, and even on the couple of colder nights we have had, my tomatoes and peppers have survived.

Oh wow- how lucky!! Just plant them to the base of the stem and you should be fine :) You can stake them if you want to (so the stalks don't lay on the ground and get wet), but it isn't 100% necessary. Hope you get a good harvest!

there are benefits to comparing it to the Canadian or US equivalents because ultimately they will be very similar. they only thing is that the frost free date ranges will be the opposite. Look into the laws in your area though. I know that gardening is considered illegal in some areas of New Zealand...

Here is one KZbinr who advises this hack and explains why it works: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kImzoqGHZ7uYiMU Also, what hack would you suggest to help a plant when being transplanted, especially trees like avocados or citrus trees.
