Hi Ashley. 🤓 I really like what you do here. I can't tell how much. I feel like I dug the internet 2-3 times to find useful information, and finally I found THIS. I can't stop starting my sentences with "I". I am sorry. 🤦‍♂ Finally someone, who simply throws out information. Thank you so much ! I love it. 😍

My Calathea Zebrina was suffering A LOT, but I never knew that the issue was salt build up. I have always bottom watered, but I definitely won't anymore. Thank you!!

Yay thanks for that explanation I was so focused on the roots that I didn't even consider the other parts of this plant and how it functions so this really clarified things. :) I have 3 Calatheas Dottie ,Peacock,Vittata and 2 prayer plants Red and Neon and 1 Green Maranta. I use a cool mist humidifier and I keep my plants right beside it. I do rotate them so they don't get too saturated / cold. So far so good I have no new browning from when I first purchased them. It's a cool mist humidifier from shoppers and it has the room and humidity temperature which I find very useful. Personally I like having my plants in my bedroom so I make sure humidity is in the 40 to 50 percent range which is also helps with my own respiratory issues. Temperature wise I find they love it at 24 degrees but they are easily tolerant of 20 degrees for more than a few hours aka while I sleep but they do good at 22 all day. I have most of my plants on a table with a Feit 9 watt grow bulb. This is what works for me being in Whitehorse. :) Thanks again for making this video!!!

Well this was timely. My niece gave me a cutting of a Maranta (Prayer plant) Dec 31 to water propagate. Just checked closer on it today to find a tiny little root is forming. Hoped online to read up on it just now...and there you are. :)

Hi Thank you so much! When we lived a little higher north in sub tropical, Qld Australia, we planted our calathea outside in the corner of our brick house in the fernery attached to the house. It was massive! Huge! It survived and still thrived in the cold nights in winter when it would be dry air, down to 5° to -3°C at night, but reach 23C during the day. It must have kept warm from the bricks radiating heat to it, as well as having the misty watering from during the day when we watered it. In summer it was a monster with the constant warm-hot humid conditions. Now we have another calathea plant indoors that struggles to survive, in fact I thought it was dead 🙁 but noticed 3 small leaves poking their way through the soil. We live near the coast now, so don’t get as extremes in temperature and humidity. I made the mistake of bringing it indoors and putting it near a window, but on hot humid days we have run the air conditioner, sometimes 24 hrs day. We have had two weeks of cooler summer humid weather (weird, but we are in a La Nińa climatic change for a few years) THANKS TO YOU shedding light on the science behind my plant demise, I now understand how it is coming back to life!! Yay! I think that I will put back outside in the thick summer humid air, and will find a good spot to plant it in my fernery. QUESTION - How much water should I give it? I think that I gave it to much water when I brought it inside, so now I am not sure? Keep in mind that there is high humidity here, inside our house at the moment. So sorry for writing a book on this, but I find it so scientifically fascinating and my plant is proof of all the information you gave us being 100% accurate 🤓🤔🧐🤓😊

I saw a gorgeous calathea at the store and was very tempted to take it home but I've just moved to a very dry place so I opted for a snake plant instead. I appreciate the detailed information, because I've been wondering if there's a way to get around the humidity issue. Have you tried different soils or growing media (leca?) that release water more readily, and would this help the plant to survive bouts of dry air?

it would make a notable difference in my opinion

@@GardeningInCanada you can look for cheaper ones second hand I'm just looking for a 20gal don't need a stand With having goldfish or guppies ;) you don't need much to run it I think I even have little heaters which put more moisture into the air We use rainwater for the fish tank and water the plants from the tank Like we do outside in the summer using the small pond instead We collect ice or water when it melts even in the winter because our water sucks iron and chemical probably calcium etc...
