Ashley is the only person on my algorithm who supplies FULL INFORMATION about gardening. Example: a very popular KZbin gardener said tomato transplanting sideways is a good idea. So... I did that. 2 days ago. Then Ashley said the same WITH CAUTION. The caution was the reason that I should not have done what I have done. I'm done. I will only listen to Ashley.

Overall, you do give more good points with the bad. After decades of consulting in this commercially, Nutrients (not even going to touch micros) and there application are one of the most complex components of crop production. Only comment I'm going to touch on, I feel is the most important. You should be concerned about where your steer manure comes from. I live one province over and am familiar with a blending/bagging operation that incorporates steer manure with municipal waste. This waste is screened and separated through a centrifuge leaving primarily organics with low moisture and then windrowed and blended with steer manure. This particular operation sells the bagged product as steer manure with no mention of the other bonus ingredients. Primarily those are human waste, and can also contain hospital, care facilities, pharmaceuticals, etc etc. Everything that enters a wastewater plant will have residual content in this final bagged product. Don't panic, I know of some very good quality aged, composted and bagged operations, just saying buyer beware.

Really inconvenient that the word organic just has two meanings in English. Like you point out, there's organic vs. synthetic, and organic vs. conventional (which is a strange word in itself, as if organic hasn't been the convention for most of history). It's a bit of a semantic problem. In Dutch we'd usually call the first version "organisch" and the second one "biologisch" although those can also be mixed up (but the term "biologisch" is protected on packaging). More of a language than a gardening problem I guess! :)

I dont get hung up on "organic". I follow organic methods, mainly because of cost. The compost and leaf mold I make are free. But there is a box of the blue stuff in my shed, its about 5 years old and mostly full. Its good for fixing a specific problem at a specific time. Like yellowing plants. I wont use bagged cow manure after last year, I got some that was tainted with aminopyralid herbicide. I do like pelletized chicken manure. So far its been safe and costs $11 for 40 pounds. 2 bags is enough for a season with some left over.

Thank you for another helpful video! I bought a bag of composted cow manure and a bag of composted sheep manure two summers ago and they have been sitting in the sunny back corner of my Canadian yard since then. I plan to put them on my garden bed this spring. Will them sitting in the unopened bags for that long have killed the microbiome? Does this mean they have been “aged” by sitting in the bags?

This topic is definitely a frustrating one as marketing isn't in support of what reality is. My local supplier boasts about their active/live compost but what they're actually selling is gardening-soil that has more oxygen by using lots of expensive expanded-shale[a very nice product]. It's funny that elemental-sulfur is organic as a non-organic compound[it's a fun fact]. I'm trying to wrap my brain on the idea that we are purchasing protons[soil that can store nutrients for plants]. I think you might ought to do a video on leaf-applied calcium. The top/new-growth on my tomato plants are all crumpled but the older leaves are HUGE & flat, so I should probably be applying way more calcium applications on the new-growth. I wish the plant calcium-sprays were as cheap as the de-icing salt used on roads as they are the same salt but different qualities.

The big issue here is the word “organic” . Anything derived from a living source is organic in nature (chemically) and not to be confused with the organic movement or organic certification ( a marketing scheme that uses fear to motivate sales) The plants and microbes don’t care …

Had soil tests on soil from my jumping worm infested bed, leaf mold, aged compost and worm castings. All came back lacking in nitrogen. Recommendation was for 0.6 lbs of high nitrogen fertilizer/100 sq-ft to meet plant nitrogen needs. Their suggestion was urea. My question, how would you introduce the needed nitrogen into a no dig, organic bed? Also, should I consider trying to lower my soil ph? Appreciate any feed back, Stay Well!!! Here are my sample results The ph on my leaf mold came back at 7.7, P @ 239 ppm and K @ 440 ppm. The ph on my worm casting came back at 7.7, P @ 381ppm and K @ 1,163 ppm. The ph on my aged compost was 7.6, P @422 ppm and K @ 826 ppm. Infested soil ph @ 7.3, P @ 296 ppm and K @ 339 ppm.

There must be some bacteria that benefits from synthetic fertilizer, whatever that form of nitrogen that is, because I'm pretty sure if you add some to a carbon rich compost, it will kick off and heat up fast much like adding grass clippings.

Nutritionally you cannot tell the difference between crops grown organically and those not grown organically. Organically grown food, however, can be smaller and more costly. Then there’s the stuff that has been grown organically but somehow the farmer was unable to slap the “organic” label on it. Getting the label is a whole process that costs money and time. The end result is that I’m not sold on the greatness of “organically grown.”

I would imagine that millions of people buy both chemically produced and organic fertilizers every year and never have their soil tested before or after they use the fertilizers. But, then again, people do the same thing with vitamins and supplements and never have their blood tested. My doctor said that millions of Americans produce expensive urine everyday.

Wow I'm glad i couldn't care less about organic growing. It's clearly just turned into something that misleading corporate marketing has once again ruined for the rest of us. How far back in the cycle can this organic but not really organic thing go? Wouldn't that mean that any cow born from a mother that wasnt raised organically is technically not organic either? Would any cow in the world be truly organic since these extremely stringent rules of organic have only been around for 10 years or so? Wasn't everyone feeding their cattle "non organically" in the 70s and 80s?
