Lol. I've had a clover lawn for years. Looks great. Bees love it. Price point free. It's nice to have a field of flowers mine stays short. In maine. I cut after it browns off and my whatever lawn is gorgeous. From a distance it puts most lawns to shame. After 4 months of severe flooding rains, boom its gorgeous. Amazing clover can be under water for months. It's free. Free free free and bees love me for it.

I live in the PNW and we have clover everywhere, which I encourage! The only problem I've found is in the dry months, which have become very dry and hot. It dies back and we can't water it because we're on a well and can't afford the water use. But, it survives!!! In the fall, it comes back and spreads and is lush and green from fall to late spring, and sometimes into mid summer depending. I have never, ever, tried to kill the clover as so many do. I want it to take over my whole lawn. I don't know what kind of grass we have, but I also let that seed naturally. Yes, it grows in places you don't want, but that's easily remedied. In the last 20 years, we have seen a symbiotic relationship between the grass and the clover. It's lovely.

When the clover roots to beds, let it grow as a companion. If it becomes too invasive, simply cut it (chop and drop), and walla, you'll have a mulch and decaying rhizomes.

I hate when dandelions are called weeds. They're incredibly medicinal and they're great for lawn soil health because their long roots bring nutrients up to the surface and provide fertilizer for all the other plants. I eat the dandelion leaves and flowers that grow in my yard and even make medicinal tinctures with the whole plant. There are definitely places in my yard where I don't want it growing but for the most part, I allow it to grow anywhere it wants in my yard.

I planted clover 4 days ago and there is already a lot of sprouts. Simply spread and covered with a light peat (1cm ish) and kept peat damp. This was over a rototilled surface.

I have a backyard that is turning to clover over time. I dont spray any weed killers in the backyard because its a main ingredient in my compost. Its a real mix of plants. But the clover is slowly taking over more area. Its not a real high traffic area, just me waling between the garden and the garage/shed and my dogs. I also let it get pretty long because I hate mowing, and I have an old lawnmower that is rusted in place at its highest setting. Thanks for giving me reasons to let it flower. A lawn that attracts pollinators is a good thing.

I am lucky and have an increasing clover lawn this year. Holding back on the mowing which with a large lawn area is beneficial. Looks absolutely amazing and the bees my beautiful pollinators are very happy too

Not sure, that she doesn't know, but this is not true. Clover is a bi perennial, meaning a couple years of life per plant, however it DOES have stolons and rhizomes. It does spread but not much. When mature about 12 inches per seeded plant.

We got a natural bluegrass/dutch clover mix (and dandelion, plantain and other weeds of course) that works excellent for really rich mulch and compost. Plus when it gets a little dry in the summer the grass slows down and the clover blooms, then the bees go crazy.

Biggest problem I see with people complaining about they're lawn is they cut it too short then complain about the results. Simply raise your mower deck to it's full height & stop butchering your growth. The gass feels & looks better when decked high.

​@@noneshereAbsolutely the key to lush "green" grass without fertilizers/weedkillers. It does best when it looks like a meadow. I allow some dandelions or coltsfoot type because insects - mainly bees/hoverflies prefer variety & will choose to move from one plant type to another. Even if you have gorgeous flowers the bees will appreciate visiting plants labelled as weeds including white or purple deadnettle

@@noneshere I don’t have a mower. I use a string weed trimmer and Japanese sickle for awkward areas between stepping stones. The clovers were tall but sparse. I didn’t overseed enough. I have minimal lawn anyway (most of the yard is raised beds + wood chip pathways). One year later, the grass + clover combo now grow the best compared to areas with either grass or clover alone!

Sorry you have THAT neighbor! Unfortunately I have THAT husband. I don't mind him keeping his lawn pristine until it interferes with my vegetables or my health. Also, be careful. If your neighbor is anything like my husband they might spray any clover that comes into the edges to try to keep if from spreading to their lawn. My husband actually sprayed Roundup on a patch of clover in my neighbors yard that was about a foot from our yard. That's definitely wrong! Hopefully your neighbor doesn't get nasty but if they keep their lawn strong and healthy I don't think your clover should affect them. Grass is highly overrated.

I wanna try this out for a vanity strip. Also I want to try to plant actual ingrown flowers on my lawn. Ones that don’t grow that high so when you mow your pretty much just trimming the pedals and the flower is still blended into the lawn. I think it’ll look uniquely beautiful

My mom had grape hyacinth popping up in her lawn ever since she planted one. She hates it, as she wanted them in the flower bed. They look so cute out in the middle of the lawn, though. I will try this peat mix overseeding technique cause i have not had much success in my hard clay grass lawn getting the clover to take hold. I was going to try airated or de-thaching the area this time but will include peat mix germinated white clover to help get the best kickstart .

I experimented with New Zealand White clover. And, I can confirm that, 1. They don't grow very well in hard clay soil. 2. They need watered twice a day (establishing). 3. They grow best in or moist soil or under a tree getting partial shade from midday Sun. 4. Not drought tolerant if it is grown sparsely.

I in Wisconsin zone 5. My backyard is totally shaded by trees. I did look into the clover option. I found a clove the grows well in shade. With that said it's grows in zone 7. I don't want to keep buying new seeds every year. So back to the grass option.

This is not really on topic, but you seem more knowledgeable than most so, with black locust being a legume and nitrogen fixing also, I had wondered at what point it be becomes available to other plants. The reason I care is because we have large areas of black locust, and as we remove stands to put in fruit or nut trees, I wondered if we then had years of nitrogen present in the "logged" spot. The number of wild trees here has tripled in 30 years, and we are just now pushing back some.

dwarf white clover is short lived perrenial 2-3 years. most people mow their lawn in my area when they see yellow or white flowers.

Better (without breaking any laws that apply to you) to let/make it become biodiverse with native species, providing value besides "looking good" And considering the drought and the global water crisis, maybe just let the lawn die unless they provide value besides looks, like pollinators or native species or something

I wish my dad was open to the idea of replacing the lawn with mulch and some plants. I think he's from a generation where for men, being connected to the yard meant having a traditional lawn. I've talked about other options, including a buffalo grass lawn, which is a native prairie grass in Colorado. So far, as long as he doesn't have to remove the lawn, he won't.

At 1:16 I'm not sure what you meant actually came through very well. You put the description of stolons on the screen but didn't talk about them, just rhizomes. White clover has stolons that are quite low to the ground. So mowing it a few inches tall isn't going to prevent the spreading, in fact it will speed it up. I was actually curious how much of the year the clover stays green up north? Here is the Midwestern US white clover dies back in the winter and needs a lot of water to keep it green through the summer.

i have raised beds, so could i just cut it before it goes to seed and then reseed every few years? buying seed every 1-2 years to reseed seems worth it if it means i dont have to deal with buying fertilizer and mowing. also i grow stuff in ground, so i assume the miniclover would be a better option to just weed out of whatever area im planting in, and it doesnt grow as tall so the veg/strawberries could grow above it? great video, thanks

I planted 1.5 acres of white Dutch clover a few years back- southern Vancouver Island- I only got two good years out of it and eventually weeds and grass took over. I’ve been told that it prefers a basic soil pH , not sure of my soil pH. I let it go to seed because -hey…free seed but to no avail. Not sure what happened.

I DUD want to add clover to my lawn. But the bee thing and invasiveness has changed my mind. Thank you this was very thorough. Im wondering if there’s another soft underfoot thing i could plant intermingled with my existing cooch grass lawn. My lawn is well established and springy because of course cooch grows across the surface. That asoect is wonderful. Only, the texture if couch is harsh. I though id i intermingled a soft lawn cover into the cooch i could achieve softness under bare feet. Do you know of other possibilities for this, please? If you have a vegetable garden and haven't sprayed the weeds chop and drop them and use as a mulch. They'll breakdown and provide nutrients to the soil as well as retaining moisture.

You don’t ever want to use any chemicals, those often end up in the water supply of your city, especially when every resident uses them, most water treatment plants can’t filter out chemical contaminants. I’d just let the clover take over personally, at least in my state it’s a native plant, and much better than grass.

I just came across another channel of a guy who says he sprays low amounts of Glyphosate to control weeds in his clover stand. Gonna try that in a small area of my 2 month old stand. He said to use a half ounce of 41% Glyphosate per gallon of water. Seems almost too good to be true. Been pulling weeds for weeks though. The video is called something like "does Glyphosate kill clover?"
