Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) is a relatively new diagnosis to the medical community. As a result, there is limited research on prevalence, diagnosis, and treatment of this disorder as well as comorbid conditions. Questions still exist regarding the symptomatology within ARFID and whether or not there are other subtypes that have yet to be identified. Many specialists have been tasked with diagnosing and treating ARFID as described in the current literature; however, the most effective intervention may include a multidisciplinary approach.
This course will discuss the definition and symptoms of ARFID, additional diagnoses that can occur with a diagnosis of ARFID and describe several different screening and assessment tools that have been utilized and studied for diagnosing. It will also discuss several possible therapeutic, medical, pharmacological interventions and rationalize the challenges with the research on ARFID.
