History like this on video is like finding gold. The plane was so limited and rare. A marvel of it's time. But to have videos of it we are truly blessed the military documented so much

Jack Northrop did get to see a model of the B-2 before he died, so he knew his concept had been validated. The wingspan was almost identical.

The team designing the B2 went to the Smithsonian to do detailed studies of the Ho-229. They also interviewed at least one YB49 pilot. One of the questions they asked, what do you do if you stall the plane? The answer was DON'T! There were 2 problems with the YB49. 1) engine power 2) flight control. The B2 flies as well as it does because it is fly by wire. The YB49 was hard to fly. When my Dad was stationed at Brize Norton, they would cover the base with smoke on take off.

I recognized his voice from "War of the Worlds" too! I think he actually has a scene in the film in which he is reporting from the site of the meteor crash. When the Martians begin their main attack, he microphone cable gets cut when they destroy his truck.

I was lucky enough to watch it fly when my dad was stationed at Kirkland AFB in New Mexico. It was coming in for a landing and was fairly low when I outside playing in the yard. I saw it twice and was completely mesmerized when it was above the house. When I saw it, it had propellers in the rear, just like the B-36.

The previous XB-35 was a piston-engined version of this type, with the YB-49 being the jet version. There are photos that show the several airframes parked together, I believe eight or more were actually built, but few were finished, flown and fully tested. Given the success of the Avro Vulcan, a less advanced 'all-wing' design, which still had a vertical tail and a nose with a cockpit, the B-49 may have been the US's most successful and longest-serving bomber. With more modern autopilot and computer stability aids (available by the time this plane flew), it would have been safe to fly to it's theoretical maximum speed. It reminds me of the time when all home computers had to be bought anew every few months, instead of going forward with the then-existing chips, drives and so on, when it was already possible for all home computers to be 'dumb terminals' which only gather information on the users, which has come true with hand-held devices, which lack the usefulness or accessability of the home computer / PC.

It is amazing considering the lack of research available at that time and everything had to be engineered with calculations from slide rules and no computers. It was said that the yaw was difficult to control on the plane. Still, it seemed to work fine in the flights. Jump ahead many decades and the flying wing returned by the B 2 Bomber.

@@PRH123 It was said the research and knowledge learned from the original flying wing was used to build the B2 bomber later. There was no fly by wire technology during the days of the first flying wing. I still think the biggest mistake of the Air Force was when the B-70 program was cancelled.

The public is mostly clueless about current events and reality. The germans had the Horten flying wing way before WWII. That is where we got the idea from. I know what you mean tho, I am amazed by the SR7I black bird..till this day, looks like a movie craft. But that was late fifties tech. Today open source we have zero gravity craft. Check it out on my channel or look up Salvatore Pais, he has a patent on a 'UFO' craft, "they're already operable". So much tech is suppressed, for the masses.

That's actually not entirely accurate. The wing did go into an end over end stall with pilot Robert Cardenas at the controls, and he was able to recover the aircraft. If you watch the film "The Legend of Pancho Barnes and the Happy Bottom Riding Club" he gives a pretty good account of this.

Thanks for your comment, but don't think that's actually true. The Internet says that "Shortly before his death, he was given clearance to see designs and hold a scale model of the Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit stealth bomber..." But I don't think he ever saw the actual aircraft.

The YB-49 needs the vertical fins to keep stable, just like the tail rudder is needed for conventional planes. The B-2 needs computers to keep stable.

The stock footage flying wing nuclear bomber completely fails to destroy the invading Martians in the 953 'War of the Worlds' movie. They have a protective 'blister' of energy (on of the very first 'force fields' put on film) which negates the attack, they then move on to destroy the army ranged against them, perhaps out of mercy, as they'd got fallout all over them already.

A flying wing with no tail at all is essentially impossible for a pilot to control in a stall. It "wants" to flip over backwards and tumble. Only after computer control has the flying wing concept become practical as the computer reacts hundreds of times faster than a human being can. The "pilot" is a director who tells the computer what he wants it to do with the airplane.

I am pretty sure the narrator is Paul Frees. Interestingly, he was a radio reporter doing the play by play in the 1953 version of War of the Worlds where the "Flying Wing" (guess which one it is) drops the bomb on those pesky Martians. Playing them side by side sure sounds similar.

YB-49's top speed was under 500 mph. When Kenneth Arnold saw his UFO's. He used the location of the mountains to time the distance from Mt. Rainer and Mt. Adams. 1 minute and 42 seconds. Approximate speed would be 1,650 to 1,700 MPH. That's over 1000 mph over the top speed of a YB-49. Maybe some sightings. But not all.

The Northrop YB49 is a prime example of small minded decision makers. The Air Force and Department of Defense screwed Jack because they were too set on conventional aircraft layout. The wing flew with with only rudimentary analog computer which proved it could be done primarily with control technology of the day. Imagine how moving forward with this design at that time may have helped to advance computers in flight control? And then Northrop was made to destroy the prototype! Jack was vindicated.

The problem with the YB-49 is that it was too far ahead of its time, the lack of proper tails meant it had stability issues and late 40s flight control systems tech couldn't handle that, if it had had fly-by-wire controls it would've been just fine but such tech didn't exist till the late 1950s.

From what I gathered in the over 50 years working in the industry and many of those with Northrop, the thing that killed this plane was its low radar cross section. Our military could not cope with a plane that our radar could not see and didn't want a potential adversary to adapt it. All flying versions were destroyed and Northrop was told to shut up and sit down. When low RCS became needed, Northrop was called upon for this fundamental design. Their B2 answered that call and currently their next generation is in the works. Jack might have been an asshole, but his company sure has developed some advanced stuff.

That's an interesting theory but the reality is, the YB-49 was a design way ahead of its time. It was a hot mess that needed computerized stabilization of a type that wasn't developed until decades later.

My Father worked on the construction of the YB 49. He was there when an Air Force Colonel, staff and later an Air Force General arrived at Northrup Aviation. They said the plane was too Dangerous to be a Nuclear Bomb Platform because of the inherent instability, the chance of losing a bomb over North America, the poor reputation of the aircraft being promoted by other Aircraft Manufacturers and the Air Force Top Brass inability to understand such a different type of aircraft and the subsequent design hurdles. My Father was there when the Air Force General reported that corrosion had been found in some areas/parts of one of the YB-49's. My Father working with other engineers determined that Sulphuric Acid had been poured onto various structural members as a deliberate act of Sabotage. It was also determined that Various Air Force Officers acting as Support Staff had gained entry inside the aircraft before the inspection on the pretext of making sure all was safe for the Air Force General. John Northrup said as much in an interview with KCET / Los Angeles before he passed away. John was still a very bitter old man even in the interview shortly before his death.

Another concept successfully developed, produced & tested within Germany under the Nazi regime, the flying wing designed by the Horten brothers. Interesting info... Otto Skorzeny, a general in the SS, AKA 'Hitler's Commando", in part, for leading the mission that snatched Mussolini from under the noses of the British, is quoted, upon seeing some examples of advanced aircraft designs developed near the end of WWII, as commenting '...on the great potential for post-war psychological operations' ...the artists rendition of the craft seen by a pilot & the eye-witness, of one of the first 'UFO' cases in the US bears a remarkable similarity to the 'Allwing Horten V' ...one of the orders issued by the top brass immediately following the crash of a craft in Roswell, 1947, was to locate the whereabouts of who....yup,you've guessed it....the Horten brothers... They were eventually tracked down in Argentina where they were ostensibly designing aircraft for Pesident Juan Peron.

The YB-49 had absolutely nothing to with research in Germany! It was based on the Northrop XB-35. Development of the XB-35 started in the USA in the early 1940's when the USA was at war with Germany. Jack Northrop had been flying small flying wings since the 1930's.

The aircraft and it's parts has had numerous names, some different depending on the country and language, since the beginning. Here in Britain, for example, the part of the wing that does the lifting is mathematically the 'aero-plane', while the fuselage, empennage, ailerons, etc. are French words, showing how influential early French flight pioneers were. Even the word of a place to keep a 'plane is 'hangar', a French word for a temporary wooden building next to a house, usually used to keep the rain off a wagon or carriage, before planes existed. Another one: by WWI, British people were calling aircraft 'machines, such as 'flying machine', 'fighting machine', battle-plane', etc. This seems to have been the result of author H. G. Wells' 'The War of the Worlds' book, where the invading Martians use 'fighting machines', 'handling machines' essentially occupied robots that do the heavy work, and most extraordinary, a 'flying machine' which is wing-shaped and drops 'black smoke' in canisters, which poisons people, and changes the air to suit the Martians and their plants. He had an influence on the English language.

This was back when Northrop used to be a very good company to work for. Everything I heard about Jack Northrop they said he was a very good man who genuinely cared about his people but nowadays Northrop Grumman is run by a gaggle of overeducated college punks who are slowly, digging that company’s grave. Northrop used to be a major player in aviation, nowadays not so much. Yeah, they might have aircraft like the B-21 Raider (nothing but a rebooted B-2 Spirit) but that’s about all they have going for them. Last aircraft they built from the ground up was the YF-23 black widow but even back then Northrop bungle it causing that program to fall flat on its keister even though it was a better airplane than the Lockheed F-22. I probably won’t live to see it but if Northrop Grumman is around 40 years from now, I’ll be shocked.

It's too bad that politics killed off the YB 49. It turned out convair had better connections and got the B 36 pushed through instead. B 36 was a joke with both props and jet engines combined. We could have had a pure jet bomber instead. I'll hate convair forever for what they did to the YB 49

Cousin Carol is a liitle older than I, Mom says uncle Ed graduated high school the year she entered first grade and the great depression was in progress so he went out on his own early. He done good. It was known that some planes had less radar 'return', but the method of hiding them was then was Electronic Countermeasures, rather than stealth design. Stealth, was cheaper and quicker to develop, but didn't need to be endlessly updated, so there was less profit in it.

Its first flight was on 21th October 1947. Its predecessor the XB-35 flew even earlier.

Thank you for posting this gem! Too bad Jack Northrop didn't live to see his vindication in the stealth bomber. I am surprised that we don't have a luxury liner in the flying wing configuration.

He did live to see it. They revealed the aircraft to him while it was still in black ops. After the final design configuration the B-2 had the same wingspan. Upon learning of this Jack Northrop said "i now know why god let me live this long."

That's awesome. I didn't realize he ever got to see the B-2. I still believe the flying wing has not found it's rightful place. I think it is the ideal airplane for passenger and cargo. I have designed two homebuilt aircraft and i think a flying wing would be the ideal homebuilt aircraft. Since a wing carries its own weight, you don't have to worry about wing spars which are not the easiest thing to design. One of these days I'm going to design a two place flying wing that can be built in a person's garage!

A problem with the Flying wing would be cargo size and the ingress/egress of bulky cargo such as a truck...compard to a conventional configured cago airvraft

Forget the golden myths about the flying wing expressed above and below. The XB-35 could not solve vibration problems caused by uneven wing wake into the props - switching to jets doomed the wing as it was now in the medium range class and in no way could compete with the medium B-47. It became an “orphan child” that the Air Force did not know what to do with.

I've not seen that aspect discussed in my own studies of the Northrop wings. It would be important to note that with the failures of the original contra-rotating propeller systems and adapting conventional props, the performance dropped so much that they knew it was doomed as a prop ship. The later YRB-49 was a six engine version, had potential to succeed if other aspects weren't dooming the project. In 1950, I was in the 4th grade at school in the country outside Wichita, Ks. In that year, a man named Orva H. Douglas moved into our school district with his wife and two children, Donald, the oldest being my age and in my class. Orva started work at Boeing/Wichta at the factory, in engineering I think. He was the flight engineer on the B-35 versions, even had one of those cast model B-49s on the stand like in this video. I was schooled a bit by Donald and his father about the "wing" projects and that was a significant background in their lives. Donald and I went on to share some modeling hobbies and we graduated together in 1959.

The wing had a nasty trait of going end over end when it departed flight. That was not recoverable.

At 8:15 " who ever heard about tailless flying wing "... Yes, two german brothers heard - and see and developed their flying wings some years ago... Dittmar and Ottmar Horten, they were Luftwaffe pilots, only electronic computer control no exhisted at time to help their flyability, as a lot of modern plane projects need to too, however, their names need not to be remembered, here, since their country loses the war... RIP.

The flying wing in this form and aim was first designed by German brothers Reimar and Walter Horten before II World War and developed during the II WW. The Germans did also first flights of that plane with code name HO-229. How Mr. Northrop got this secret project after the II WW and started the adventure with that design remains a mystery. Bo Janu That's not exactly true. Hugo Junkers patented the flying wing concept in 1910. Jack Northrop was designing one before the Horton brothers began their version.

The flying was a theoretical target to build as soon as a mathematician saw the figures derived from wind tunnels. Building it was attempted many times. Many early airplanes had mostly-wing or even all-wing designs, and things like the Westland 'pterodactyl' can be found, which is one of those many.
