Benoit Vanhees This and a few others. The f-35 also has the EOTS system that ties into the fusion OS. It’s basically a high powered IR camera with laser pointing. They all tie together into the fusion OS. So if DAS sees something, like those green circles over the other aircraft in the video, you can scan it with your radar and zoom in with EOTS for a closer look or to laz the target. The F-22 is kinematically superior but has fewer sensors and displays its fused data onto screens. The F-35 gives you the ability to actually look, zoom, scan and shoot using the helmet. It’ll be much better at killing ground targets.

@@charleshixon1458 It's actually the F-22 that has more displays whereas the F-35 has only one (two if you count the HMD). The F-35 combines all the data into one big display so that it's presented in a clear uncluttered fashion.

Helmet is part of the F-35 mission systems just as a HUD is part of legacy fighters systems. Therefore, HMD is included in the aircraft's contract and is included in its airframe and mission system price. The current cost is aprox. $400,000 but it is not just an HMD but also a HUD replacement and an aid to provide sensor-fused data to the pilot.

You also have to pay for a removable top for a BMW or Porsche. ANd anyway, what are a couple of millions extra, if a country is ready to give billions for the plane ?
