I've got a Phoenix in IXP and I absolutely love it. It's wonderful to paddle in moving water and does well enough on flat water that it would be a good boat for Quetico / Boundary Waters trips as well. I own other boats that I love for their purpose, but if I could only have one the Phoenix would be it.

I am so use to my Bell Magic I am affraid I would feel to sluggish slow on the rivers I paddle most. I have several other boats. Got to have the right tool for the job.

Any tips for getting comfortable in the Phoenix, just started using mine with a kneeling setup and I have spent a lot of time in the lake getting dumped?

Take some videos of yourself paddling and direct message or email them to me. ejebersold@gmail.com Loose hips don’t sink ships. keep your head over your belt buckle over the center of the canoe. Lighten up on the power of your strokes that you are applying so that you don’t pull yourself into the water. Slowly introduce more power.

I wanted a Phoenix in IXP but all dealers in my part of the country were out... so I got it in Blacklight. I think the Blacklight is their best looking option, but wanted the IXP for durability..... but I have found the Blacklight to be more than adequate for the canoeing I do; which is small to medium size rivers, minimal white water, ponds and small lakes. I am 6'4" and used to kneel in my father's old Lincoln canoe, but normally sat (in that one and my own family canoe). So with the new Phoenix I thought "heck, go with the kneeling" position. I am 6'4"..... and... no. LOL I simply could not get comfortable kneeling in such a small solo canoe. And the Phoenix is quite playful, so that much top heavy situation was not only not fun, but pretty miserable. I purchased the mid drop seat brackets and... PERFECT! I can't say how much I truly love the Northstar Phoenix. It's fast, playful, and in the Blacklight gets more than its share of looks and compliments... it's down right sexy. I am not trying to take views, but I have some videos up on my channel of me out with this beauty this past summer. Sadly we got a LOT of rain, so I was not able to get out as much as I had intended to, or WANTED to. Cheers!

if you had to choose between the phoenix or the Northwind for 3 or 4 night tripping in the wilderness, which one do you choose?

Lake country or rivers? And if rivers, what kind? If I’m going into the Boundary Waters I’m taking a NW solo. If I’m running a moving river w flat windy sections maybe still a NW solo. If more ripples, ww and current then Phoenix. That being said, the Phoenix is a wonderful “do all”.
