We were leaders, unfortunately our "leaders" sold us out and "merged" with Delta. There really is no such thing as a merger due one airline survives and the other goes away forever taking all that history with it. NWA had one of the best histories and people in the industry and that will never be replaced. Enjoy your regional jet flights and no amenities. The airline industry is truly dead.
@EpicThe11210 жыл бұрын
True and they had hubs in MSP and DTW which have flights to MNL and if the B787 wasn't delayed then NW now DL could have used them on nonstop MSP/DTW/ATL & JFK-MNL by simply overflying NGO or NRT

Daniel Barnes there's way too many airlines that expanded to long haul. Continental, Delta, United, American, us airways. How many times a year are you flying to Europe Asia across whole world? Us is badly positioned to have connecting traffic from Asia to Europe etc. All major EU airlines such as Lufthansa,British airways, klm, air France have very large connecting traffic from USA as well as Asia Africa and rest of the world. Therefore it didn't workout for them in us.

All materials in the 787 Dreamliner, including composites, have been tested and used in aircraft, including other Boeing aircraft, for over 40 years. Composites can withstand repeated flexing are not prone to sudden failure as are metal alloys that fatigue and destabilize. Materials in the 787 subject to changes in heat and pressure are similar to those in the space shuttle and do not become brittle due to temperature changes. Many parts in the 787 are from the same Airbus supplier.

The 787-8 and 9 don't have winglets. The 787-3 is shorter and is designed differently so it has winglets to improve aerodynamics. The 8 and 9 series are long enough to be able to use Boeing's new curved wing concept.

@jrs896 жыл бұрын
NWA deferred the orders. They were in bankruptcy. Once Delta took over, Delta deferred the orders again. Delta eventually converted the 787 orders to the 737-900ER. There are a bunch of MD88s and 757s coming of age. Delta needed the narrow bodies more than it needed long-range wide bodies. At the same time, Boeing was launching their fourth generation 737 ("MAX") and was winding down production of the third generation 737 ("NG"). Boeing needed to bridge-the-gap until the MAX went into production and, in the meantime, extended very attractive pricing on the end-of-line NG aircraft to Delta. In this decade, Delta has placed orders for (120+) 737s and (120+) A320s. They just placed an order for an additional (100) next-gen A320neos for the next decade. It's safe to say that wide bodies weren't a priority for Delta this decade. Delta had some wide body retirements this decade. Ultimately, the 787 was not available when they needed deliveries and was not the right fit. The two available 787 models were either too small or too much range for Delta's network. The A350 was the perfect storm to replace the 747. It was bigger than the 787, had the range, and was available. Delta has a ton of 767s that fly Eastern-US to Europe and Western-US to Asia. The 787 is in many ways a successor to the 767. They're similarly sized. For Delta's network, it doesn't need the range of the 787. There's no benefit to paying for that extra range. The A330 has shined here. The A330 is significantly cheaper to acquire and, on these missions, has very good economics. Some of the aging 767s are being replaced with the next-gen A330neos. If the 787 comes down in price one day, we might see it in the fleet. We would also have to see more 2nd tier cities beef up their airport operations for these "long and thin" routes to work. I think NWA's original strategy was to bypass their NRT (and NGO) hub because they did not have an alliance partner in Japan and they knew their days of their intra-asian network were numbered. Unfortunately, it's really hard to sustain long haul routes without a mix of connecting and destination/origin traffic... even with a 787.

I like how you're comparing the 747-400 with the Airbus A380 SuperJumbo. :) One day, when you fly, you'll wonder why Airbus created their planes differently than Boeing, and you'll also notice that both manufacturers use different materials and techniques. Boeing's been known to overbuild their planes, which is why they've flown longer. The Airbus planes are basically "throwaway" planes that are tossed out after 20 years of service. Other than that, let's await the arrival of the 787...

What we're finding out with the use of those materials in warplanes is that they are extremely expensive to maintain. Compared with aluminum, steel and titanium, the ability of the "newer" materials used in the planes like the 787 to withstand stress is much more greatly affected by factors such as: temperature variations humidity & moisture UV rays and because it's extremely difficult to identify, diagnose and repair weakened or damaged areas, ongoing maintenance costs are very very high.

F-16AM & F-22/F-35 & B2, but also in retrospect Boeing has contributed the same with the F/A-18F Superhornet and the long standing and lasting B-52.
