I'd give anything if my father were still alive to hear this. He played this piece in an Army band at the beginning of WW2, playing trumpet. He developed an infected upper lip, and switched to woodwinds. He then played the "Working on the Railroad" solo on the tenor sax. He was a heck of a musician and an oral surgeon. Me? Piano and lawyer.

did some fact checking and only the principal trumpeter for Atlanta ever spent time studying at Northwestern. Toronto guy has been in that position since 1999 and Indy guy went to school in Cleveland
@justinbonz7 жыл бұрын
The Toronto associate trumpeter was in this group though
@binderbone7 жыл бұрын
firstly, notice that the comment was from 2 years ago... 2 years ago, check who was the principal of Indy. Secondly, yes, I meant the associate principal of Toronto. Thirdly, if by "spent time" you mean earn a Master's degree, then yes.

Unfortunately, there are a ton of districts that have extremely under funded programs or no music at all. I couldn't imagine that having been someone that graduated high school because of the music program.
@Tocsin-Bang5 ай бұрын
In the UK there have been massive cutbacks in music funding. Although I am not a musician, I had one of the finest music teacher possible, Lt. Col. Sam Rhodes, MBE, ARCM, (retd) former Director of Music, the Scots Guards, and Senior Director of Music, the Guards Division. He gave me a love of all kinds of music that has lasted more than 60 years.

Don't know where you all are now Gentlemen, but your performance here is timeless! Near perfection. Disregard the naysayers who believe they know something about music. I know you practiced this piece numerous times and it shows in your performance. It is certainly not easy standing in front of an audience and being judged for any minor error. I know because I did it. I didn't play trumpet because I wanted to win an award or a competition. I played it because I loved it. I took it up in the seventh grade and played for 9 straight years. I was the principle trumpet in 9th grade and 12th grade and then 3 years in the military. At the age of 69, I still love music like I did when I was 12. This performance brought back so many memories but the main reason I love it is because it is a superb demonstration of technical skill which can only be achieved by dedication and love for the instrument. All 8 of you worked together as a team to highlight the beauty of this piece and your own technical skills. You can be proud of what you did and your performance stands as a testament to what hard work and dedication to your craft can achieve. Thank you.

If the Northwestern trumpet studio teaches anything, it's the perfect combination of musicality and consistency. Butler and Geyer will be missed in the future, I'm sure.

I love Barbara and Charlie. Lucky for me, they are both at Rice University in Houston and play in the HGO orchestra. That's a good band! They sound like God on Verdi stuff. And as to the "musicality and consistency" that they both teach/coach/demonstrate so well?... I played French horn in the Paragon Brass Ensemble from its inception and for 6 years. Adam Bruce was one of our trumpeters and he was also Principal Trumpet of the Houston Ballet Orchestra at that time, as well. Awesome guy and musician! Yeah!... He studied with Barbara Butler at Eastman for his BMus and then with James Austin at UofH for his MMus. Adam could rock the casbah!! In fact, he is my inspiration now that I too play trumpet. A quote from the BBC series Red Dwarf just popped into my mind - had to snicker!!! "What a guy!"
