Huskies vs Cats: Who Will Be The First To Find A Way Out of The Maze?

North Yuki Husky

Күн бұрын

I took out all the furniture to build a maze for my dogs and cats. A cardboard maze with high walls was waiting for my dogs and cats to enter. Which of my pets would be the first to find their way out of the maze? My huskies and kitties were mildly surprised to see that a familiar room had become a tangled trap with many corridors. Some of my dogs wandered around the maze for quite a while before they got out. But for some of my furry babies, the maze seemed like a simple task.

I gave my 2 cats a Trixie puzzle, a box with various compartments to open to get kibble. Murzi the black female immediately went to work on it and figured out all the doors except one. But Cedrik her tabby brother immediately looked up at me, like, "I've got it, here's mom, Mom will figure it out for me. Why should I bother?" Cedrik is very sociable and vocal.

Not surprising when you consider dog's instinct is to rely on the pack and their sense of smell. So it makes sense that after the first dog (50-50 chance) took that turn and stayed in that dead end for some time, the other dog could smell that and followed his trail. And the 3rd dog would instinctually assume if both went that way first, she should too. Meanwhile cats don't hunt in groups, so there is no reason to follow one another. Tho idk whether it was chance both took the correct turn, or if there is a instinctual reason for that too.

Thoughts prior to race: 1. The dogs will definitely benefit from a height advantage. 2. The cats will be distracted by the cardboard and potential face rubbing opportunities. Results: 1. Nope. 2. Yup! - What I think would be even more interesting is a second run to see how well they remember the course. I wonder if the results would be the same or if their times would improve. Lastly, thank you for the traffic jam free-for-all at the end! Very fun.

Height/Size advantage. Not really, they could not see over the boxes, it also more awkward for them to do things like turn around. If you watched the videos, the dogs wasted a lot of time looking up towards the camera and were distracted. It looks like they were considering jumping over, but only because they couldn't see over the side, but that's a guess. The cat's not really distracted or looking up so much (though cats are often less interested in their owners anyway). I'd be interested to see a larger comparable maze where the walls were equivalently as high as they are to cats, but to the dogs as well.

What's notable is that both the kitties immediately went left rather than the more direct path that turned out to be a dead end. Thing about cats is that in unfamiliar situations/territories they will likely prefer to walk at the edge of a well-defined perimeter rather than any seemingly more direct approach. Probably some ancient caution instinct at play.

@@NorthYukiHusky I agree. Moreover, dogs and cats have a stronger "irritant" - a new environment in a place familiar to them. They did not "take up the scent", in the usual sense of the word. As for my dogs, they mainly use "upper (air) scent", and not "lower (ground) scent".

This is so fun to watch. I’ve been told the easiest way to get out of a maze if you’re human, of course, is to put your left hand on the left wall as soon as you walk in the maze and just keep following the left wall with your left hand and eventually you will come to the finish point. I’ve always wanted to try it. But by looking at the overhead view of this maze, it seems like it would work. Edit: it also seems like you could do right hand on the right wall and follow it as well and it will yield the same result.

Belka worked the actual maze - so did Bat but that baby got confused by that last wall. The dogs were working the scent of the treat & wanted the most direct route - that dead end each went to was actually the most direct route from the In door to the treat. When they were blocked, they had a hard time figuring out how to get directly to the scent in an indirect way. I also noticed that Bat seemed to think someone would come to the rescue - that's a genetic trait in domesticated cats, which goes along with their high-pitched, baby-like cry. But when Bat saw no one was coming, it was back to the maze. Also, Belka was rubbing their scent on that cardboard - either just in case they passed that way again, as a habit, or for future reference for the other pets ("Belka waz here!" graffiti without the messy spray paint). In any event, I wonder how many humans would get out in under 2 minutes in a human-sized maze of the same style? 😂😂😂

A dream to see these clever doggies' eyes, and observe their whole body in think-think mood: for me some of the most beautiful expressions dogs can have (beside when they look to us lovingly) is when they are pondering full-steam to find a solution; and each one is just so beautifully-perfectly himself at its best: your love for them make them very exceptional. - Remain Healthy and Blessed ye all together.

I’ve seen newborn kittens find their way out of a closed maze in total darkness . Between their whiskers and their nose, they’re amazingly equipped for moving in darkness in a maze! I suspect the difference here is, the maze is open and it’s at home. I don’t know if the cats care, but the dogs are either looking at you holding a camera or they equate the camera with you. That’s what dogs care about: what’s expected of them, and how it affects pack and place in pack.
