One of England's most infamous defeats comes in a World Cup qualifier away to Norway in September 1981. Despite taking the lead through a Bryan Robson goal, England are behind by half-time and fail to recover as Norway hold out for the victory. The result means England look set to miss out on a place in the finals, but an unexpected sequence of results will enable them to qualify by beating Hungary two months later. Includes brief studio analysis by John Bond with Jim Rosenthal - the English mood after this defeat is inevitably vastly different to the famously jubilant Norwegian "your boys took a hell of a beating" commentary!

England beat Hungary in the final game of the group to guarantee qualification (a draw would have been enough on goal difference). However, I still remember the shock of Romania losing at home to Switzerland the month after England lost to Norway. Romania then failed to win in Switzerland meaning England just needed to avoid losing to Hungary.

The commentators are wrong about the second norwegian goal. It's not "Okland", or in Norwegian Økland (with Arne Larsen as first name), who scores. It's Hallvard Thoresen. Btw, Hallvard Thoresen is one few who got caps for Norway, but haven't played in norwegian "premier league", or as it called in Norway "tippeligaen"

Hallvar Thoresen scored the second goal. Goes from Larvik Turn to FC Twente in 1976.Then he goes to PSV Eindhoven from 1981-1988. Gunnar Thoresen helped his son writing a letter to Fc Twente in 1976. He comes over 19 years old, and his fantastic skills helps him. He plays for Twente when they won the Dutch cup 1977. Gunnar got 64 caps for Norway and his son Hallvar 50. 38 as a skipper. England were certainly lucky to qualify from this group, relying on Romania collapsing having initially got themselves into a strong position. Trevor Brooking missed all three of England's away defeats, which I think was a factor in them struggling so badly. The longer his England career went on the better he seemed to become at international level, and many of his best performances came when he was in his thirties.

Yes, I agree. We maybe could have got to the semis if Keegan stayed fit. We really did play well in Spain. But in truth, we were beyond lucky to get there. Unlike in 1982, we were awful throughout 1981. The only reason we got to Spain was because Romania completely f***ed it up, not us on merit. Hungary had already qualified and had next to little to play for when we beat them 1-0 at Wembley in November that year and they had next to none of the skill and talent that Slaven Bilic's 2007 Croatia side had who knocked us out in similar circumstances.

That point is true (England have no monopoly on luck there, Argentina just scrapped qualification for Russia) but this was a very good team, the England team that tried to qualify for '78' only lost one match to Italy (who they beat at Home) and went out due to goal difference not points to Italy...From the late 70's to 1990 England had excellent players and some superb squads and if Keegan-Brooking and Hoddle had played the Spain from the get go, the English would have got the semi of the 82 World cup regarded by some as the best of all time...some praise...

Qualification was extremely hard to achieve in the 60s/70s when only team in a group went through but for 1982, it was top two who went through. Odin, Thor, Leiv Eriksson, Harald the hairy, Edvard Grieg, Edvard Munch, Henrik Ibsen, Roald Amundsen, Fritjof Nansen, Sonia Henie, Sissel Kyrkjebø, Bjørge Lillelien! Can you hear me? Norway's national team were the world's best amateur team at the time. They qualified for the 1980 summer olympics in Moscow. I think Lillelien had a message for Bresnev too. Bjørge Lillelien were hilarious. For him commentating sports events should be entertaining for the audience. Doesn't matter if it's boring. Make it exiting was his philosophy. Back in the days we used to watch sports on tv but we used to mute the tv and listen to Lillelien on tha radio while we saw the same event on tv. We were pissing our pants laughing.

The English spelling started to change in the 70s. Another variant about that time was Roumania. Germans and French write it with a 'u' still to this day.

@@igorszamaszow171 Interesting. I never knew that. Just checked it out, and sure enough the English spelling used to be "Ru" until the mid-seventies. Still not sure why it's spelt Ru here considering it's a 1981 UK broadcast.

@@MWRent well, it was way before you could check the correct spelling in a second. They probably had some dictionaries and handbooks, but I'm not sure they were always up to date. Also, if you have a guy whose job is to make the titles, and he has been spelling it 'Rumania' for twenty years before the government decided to change the spelling, some mistakes are inevitable.

Nah, from 1982 to 2006 their record is pretty decent, it's just that they're appalling at penalty shootouts. Give them the shootout record of Germany and their tournament record would look excellent. (Seriously, try it.)
