The sleeper cabins only show up after you’ve selected a regular ticket, because they are an extra. If there’s no availability, they won’t show up as an extra option.

It doesn’t get completely dark in the summer, no!

In summer, it's almost never goes pitch black, and in winter, it almost never is sunny.

So if you book a sleeping cabin you can't just go and sit in the regular seats? I'd like to look at the nice view from Trondheim to Oslo (and back) while riding the train.

The overnight train runs from 11pm to 6.30am so if you’re going to sleep there isn’t really any time for anything else. Also there is only a month or two at the height of summer where you will see much anyway. You can always sit in the dining car, or there is a window in your cabin.

The train between Oslo and Trondheim also runs during the day, in addition to overnight. I've taken the daytime train a few times, in both directions (Oslo to Trondheim, and Trondheim to Oslo), precisely because I wanted to see the scenery -- which is some of the most spectacular in the world. No need to pay for a sleeping cabin during the day -- just find a regular seat, and enjoy. Also much less expensive than an overnight sleeper.
