March for the Turkish Ceremony (Marche pour la cérémonie des Turcs) was written by Jean-Baptiste Lully in 1670. It is taken from the ninth comedy-ballet entitled « Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme » by the playwright Molière. Comedy ballet is a combination of spoken comedies, singing, and dancing. This form was desired by King Louis XIV in order to sew together theater, music and dance without breaking the thread of the piece. Context: The King received the emissary of the Grand Turk represented by Suleiman Aga in 1669 but the diplomat's clumsiness and casualness turned into a caricature. It was then that the famous « Turkish ridiculous ballet » was born. The comedy-ballet is a veritable reservoir of the processes that Jean-Baptiste Lully will find in lyric tragedy. She is entirely instrumental and is intended to be danced. So it’s ballet music. To heighten the irony of this scene, the composer uses all the instruments at his disposal and also takes percussion with oriental sounds. The march is structured around two repeated musical phrases. From the first notes, everything is done to create a solemn character: the key of G minor, the dotted rhythms similar to opera overtures and supposed to represent the march of the Sun King. This colored piece also includes a small tessitura of which the repetitions offer a journey of exploration of the timbre in the composition. *Lucien*

Tak tady bych tak úplně nesouhlasil - hlavně tempo Ballet les Francais ( cca 41. min ) mi připadá extrémně pomalé a nelíbí se mi to. Pravda, nevím, jestli a jaké tempo předepsal Jean Baptiste do not, ale já mám tisíckrát naposlouchané celé představení od Le Poéme Harmonique / Benjamin Lazar, kde je tato část mnohem rychlejší a zní to podle mě lépe. Samozřejmě, jak třeba Ballet des Espagnoles, Entrée des Italiens a také Ballet les Francais jsou věci zpívané, což tady nesmírně chybí. K lepšímu pochopení celé věci bych každému doporučil zmíněné představení Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme - Le Poéme Harmonique / Benjamin Lazar. Dlouhé, ale nezapomenutelné po všech stránkách. At´ žije Lully 🙋🙂…!

My dream is and has always been to not only hear the music performed in a manner like this but to see the stage work done in period costume and translated into either English or my native Swedish. We have such a wonderful theatrical tradition in Europe but we never use it. And i don't care to have the best operatic singers. Most of this is supposed to be spoken woth slight melody rather than sung. I still dream but this concert is something at least. I can of course understand the presenter describing the stories in Norwegian and the music is great.

Oh yes, the famous Franco-Ottoman alliance. At the expense of Eastern European Christian countries. For example, when Hungary was defeated by Suleiman the magnificent, Hungarians lost their country to the Ottomans for 168 years, It was the French ambassador who first congratulated the sultan on his victory, and shortly after they formed the alliance, basically legalizing the colonization of Eastern Europe and the slaving of millions of Eastern European Christians by a Muslim imperialist country. I’m Hungarian for the record. Yes their chickens have come home to roost now.

Yes, something like that, basically the title contains a contradiction, "gentilhomme" means noble in this context, and he is not a noble, he is a bourgeois who is a successful businessman but not a noble, but would like to be. So he tries to learn how to become one by learning noble occupations like speaking properly, fencing, dancing, music etc... but fails of course.

I think that the Marche pour la cérémonie des Turcs is at 44:39, not 18:30 (by the way, and this isn't really a big deal, but the t in Turcs has to be capitalized in French, in this case, or else it is a mistake in French - it is not capitalized if it is an adjective, but it is if it is a noun referring to a person or people from a certain area, as it is here, it is).
