thank you to all those that have commented and wanted to let you all know I am in a much better place, but will never take mental wellness for granted and work very hard to maintain it - but hope and light are back in my life :)

Same! My theory is that because we do not know a lot about the main character of the novel, every reader can see himself in this character, I mean most readers are introverts and that's pretty much about half what we know about Watanabe, many people didn't like how passive Watanabe is in the book but I believe this is why the book can talk to all the readers in a personal level

Exactly, each character is perceived so differently. I guess this might happen even with how people perceive us

Hearing out your reflection was really cleansing to experience. I too felt a heaviness when I was reading this book, so much so that I had to put it down for a bit. I empathised too much with Watanabe's and Naoko's detachment/distance from reality.

As someone who lost her fiancé (who was my childhood friend & first/only love) a week before our wedding at the age of 22, and diagnosed with mdd, psychosis, and complicated grieving, I relate deeply to Naoko's position in the novel.

Thank you for your brutally honest review. The beautiful aspect of books is that it touches us in various ways, yes the intentional view of the author is important, but so is our perception. Once again, thank you for sharing.

This is my favourite book and I have read it multiple times, although I’m not into romance novels but there is something about this book that is fascinating, I think the way he get very deep into the characters especially noako. Thank you for the review and please if you feel well and I hope you do please do more books reviews.

My heart goes out to you. I can feel your struggle through the booktube waves. I haven't had quite the same experience with hormonal changes here at middle age, but they are affecting my mood and energy levels. It is so strange where I can feel like I am rational in some action or feeling out of character for me, and then later (perhaps as hormones shift and balance) I realize that I was not. The perception in the moment is very hard to overcome. I struggled with serious depression as a youth, and even though I haven't experienced that in decades, I do fear it could come back one day. I know what a chore it is to continue pushing through the mud trying to find your way out. I am rooting for you (as I root for all people having to struggle in this way). And I quite enjoyed Norwegian Wood when I read it some years ago for a real life book club, although I think I was the only one in my group who did.

Absolutely one of the most reflective books I have read, and one deeply close to my heart. Understanding the seperation that can come with mental illness/trauma. Sometimes it's nice to know that people understand how you feel and that in itself is beautiful. I loved this reflection your thoughts are insightful, hope you are well.

I too am sorry to hear you are not feeling yourself😩. Looking back I can now say that while HRT did help with the physical symptoms, antidepressants (SSRI variety) did much more for my mental well being. Hope your reading time at least gives you some release!🙋‍♀️📚📚

Before your review, I saw three other reviews made by women. They all found issues with the female characters being portrayed in a "sexist and misogynist" manner. You are the first one who didn't bring it up and definitely shows your maturity. Thank you!

Why would people interpreting elements of the book as misogynistic be a sign of immaturity?

@@EyeOfThePhi nothings wrong with writing about sex. Murakami just portrays most if all the female characters as stereotypes and sex objects.

I was just thinking about you yesterday and wondering how you were doing, I’m sorry to hear you are still struggling but know there is light at the end of the tunnel not to sound flippant. I don’t like the way anti anxiety drugs make me feel so am experimenting with CBD’s, which are also available in the UK, as a plant based remedy. I think they are helping but know that hormonal shifts are not that easy to deal with. Your reflection about this book was more poignant because of how you are feeling if that helps at all. Be well.
