For the 10th party congress of the SED in 1981, which coincided with the 25th anniversary of the NVA, a newly designed, regulated large tattoo was put together. Gerhard Baumann, head of the NVA's music department, was responsible for the compilation of the pieces of music and the arrangements. The big tattoo in its new form was premiered on February 28, 1981 at the Neue Wache in Berlin.

I forgot how much I loved the Großer Zapfenstreich. The funny thing is that it's full of music used by the NatSocs, lol. Now, tell me, doesn't it sound like a fucking soundtrack? At the end, "Für den Frieden der Welt" sounds like the end credits lol

Issue here is that the communist Großer Zapfenstreich is different than the Original. There is no “Zum Gebet” either. It’s a beautiful ceremony ruined by communists, who were far worse than NATSOC Germany

fuck this zapfenstreich is legendary... thank you so much Norwegian Baron. Much of the music in the middle bit of the Zapfenstreich is essentially a potpourri of popular and patriotic songs from the DDR era. Music from an era of German history that not many know intimately. The DDR was a police state under heavy surveillance and ultimately a child of the great game between America and the Soviet Union. In the German sphere of history, it is simply another 'split personality' that the country has had to re-integrate into its remnants following two world wars. Ever since 1945, Germany, much like Japan, has struggled to find its self again, treading the line between peaceful and militaristic nationalism with great care. The DDR was a parallel country outside of the de-Nazification process in West Germany. Despite being a Soviet satellite state, its leaders still wanted it to be a German state, and both East and West Germany pursued the goal of reunification, on their own terms. The end result is this music we get to hear: socialist melodies with a German flavor, embodying both an optimistic hopefulness and a melancholy, wistful undertone that remembers the human sacrifices made for a better future. As the East German anthem is called: 'Auferstanden aus Ruinen', or 'Risen From Ruins'. Given how German reunification is seen as a theatre of the 'defeat' of communism in Eastern Europe, it is unlikely that we will ever hear this music again.
