14:35 The old Villa Gardens public house which stood on the site of the current Caravan and Campsite on Martineau lane, formally the site of Lakenham outdoor swimming pool. The building which was occupied by the City Councils Arboriculturalist was damaged by the aftershock of two 1000lb bombs which landed in the nearby marshes on 17th May 1941. I believe from studying old photos of the bomb damage taken the next day that the intended target was a large spotlight which was situated across from Villa Gardens on the far side of Martineau lane

I always wondered what St Stephen's looked like before it was modernised. Now I know! Thank you for uploading this.

I live in one of those prefabs. It's still true today that prefab houses (the single storey prefab bungalows were all demolished) are highly sought after. Landlords love getting their mitts on them because they can charge rent on 6 - 8 individual students per house, without feeling cramped. It's sad though, as these homes were meant for post war, homeless families. I can only imagine the sheer joy for those post war families who were housed in them. Some, like mine, have small extensions on the side (no idea why, but only a few do) which are nothing more than a small storage area & a tiny toilet. What bliss for many who had only previously ever had outdoor lavatories - some shared in the old courtyards in the city centre. Not only did they now have an indoor toilet in the upstairs bathroom, but they also had another downstairs, also indoors. Having a small dining room had to be the icing on the cake. I can understand why many families refused to leave. They'd gone from living in slum housing, to what must've felt like a palace.

Amazing to see shoes made by hand not so long ago.. I remember the fun fair on the cattle market and it being quite a lively area. Now it’s dead so not such a good design after all … oh well at least they tried..

13:45 A fine record with libraries? They sure as huck cant spell or read, or write for that matter. The school standards from back in the mid seventies was, and still is, a an absolute disgrace.
