Nostalgia is such an appropriate name for this. Memories of the past are so ephemeral - all that's left is a feeling when most of the detail has been destroyed.

it's quite interesting how the ability to put the mouse over the timeline and see the future image changes this film entirely.

Seriously? I find this film weirdly calming. Very simple and unique. Like a collection of short stories in form of a video. When our lecturer finished playing the first part, our class actually asked him to play the second part!

Thanks for posting this....it's not for all tastes but it is quite fascinating. The particular school of avant-garde here is "structuralism" (or something close to it, anyway).

I guess I can't go against that because I've never even heard of avant-gaurde music, the genre that is. but I've probably heard things in that genre and just didn't know.

I have personally come to hat all things avant garde; that's what it's called, right? Yeah. What is this nonsensen and why am I watching this - oh right for a fine arts class. Wait a sec. why am I posting this on the interweb anyway? Why would anyone care what my opinion of this, this whatever is???

If you're going to put up a great film, then DON'T PUT UP A STRETCHED VERSION OF IT. He took care with his image. So should you. At least now it's on Criterion in the proper format.

Hi Su - it's Adam Khalil - I uploaded this in 2009 when I was 21 years old - I guess I misripped the DVD collection Treasures IV: American Avant-Garde Film, 1947-1986 (2008). Forgot that it's even up here. At the time after moving from my tribes reservation to study film at Bard I was so frustrated that the entire canon of "avant-guard' or whatever you want to call it cinema was not available to folks unless they were 'in-the-know' or living in a major city. My 21 one year old self was putting this here to share the work and I've since forgotten it's up here! Don't really have the bandwidth or interest to share in this way any longer - as now it's on Criterion and more widely available so I'll prolly delete. Hope yr well!! The comments on this video thru the years are hilarious fwiw :)

i can understand it. i like this kind of film in general, i just feel like this film actively tries to make a big deal out of itself. there is no subtlety whatsoever so, to me, personally it comes off as obnoxious. i do not really care for the way the theme is presented
@thedelta725 жыл бұрын
Pretentious and obnoxious are different things, right? Be more specific. Pretentious synonyms: affected, ostentatious, chi-chi, showy, flashy, tinselly, conspicuous, flaunty, tasteless, kitschy. I think we can objectively agree that the work in question displays none of those qualities. A work like "Lord of The Rings", in book or film (both of which I happen to like) has waaaay more pretence than this piece. "Obnoxious" is another matter. I think this work is both direct in the extreme, and somewhat destructive (literally, in that the photos are destroyed), so it has a lot in common with punk rock ("I Wanna Be Sedated" by the Ramones to pick an example out of the air), an art form many also considered obnoxious, but one which is also, like Nostalgia, the opposite of pretentious. Note that I have neither judged your dislike of the piece, not stated my own feelings towards it. Sorry for what might seem like pedantry, but details are important if we're to have any hope of analyzing cultural forms, apart from stating our like or dislike of them. Was that pretentious? I hope not.
