It kind of made sense that Belle didn't have a lot of flaws. The movie was not about her changing, it was about the Beast changing. Belle's role was to be a catalyst for change. One thing that I liked about Belle was that although she held onto modern values, she still seemed like a woman who could believably exist during her time period. Her dialogue and the way she conducted herself made her a timeless character. It feels like nowadays, filmmakers try to have characters act and sound modern in order to identify with today's crowd.

For those who compare this story to Stockholm Syndrome and abusive relationships, you are absolutely entitled to your personal beliefs. My personal belief is that there is very little about Belle and Beast's relationship which even hints at either of the aforementioned. She holds her ground against him, defying his command to stay away from the East Wing and then leaves when he loses his temper. The only reason she returns to him is because of a compassionate heart, and even then she doesn't put up with his pig-headed stubbornness and pride. She gets yelled at and promptly fires back, to the point where she actually renders him speechless. They then have the common ground moment where she thanks him for saving her life and he slowly begins to change. As Doug says, we don't know if they're together for weeks or months, so to say he just turns around in a matter of days may not be completely accurate. Further more, HE is the one who starts to change because of her. Almost any documented case of abuse or Stockholm Syndrome will show the victim is the one who changes, not the abuser. If you want to look for what could have been a genuine case of Stockholm or DV, look at Gaston's character. He wants to marry a girl because she's beautiful, and the life he has already scripted out for them is her staying at home, cooking, cleaning, and giving him children. When he doesn't get his way, he becomes less charming and more violent, going so far as to lock her in the cellar. Again, you all have your personal opinions about this story, but if you're going to call this a lesson to young girls about finding an abusive man for your "happy ending", I encourage you to watch the movie again as well as looking up the actual definition of an abusive relationship/Stockholm Syndrome.

You know, I like Belle because I can relate to her. I love to read and I know what it's like to be seen as a bit odd to other people. But I think she is a human being and not really perfect. She gets angry, sad , happy, and she's definetly a strong lead. THIS is why Belle is my favorite Disney princess.

I don't think that Belle is without flaws. Let's be honest: She is incredibly nosy! Heck, she gets captured by a monster, who tells her that she can go wherevers she wants in the castle, except for one wing... and where does she go imediatly? That one fricken wing! I get it, she's a curious character. And many people would probably end up peaking around eventually. But she does it IMEDIATLY, even though she got warned several times by two other characters! That shows ZERO self control on her part! That doesn't really bring her down as a character, if anything it makes her more believable. But it certainly is a flaw that makes her less than perfect.

I just saw the teaser trailer for the Bill Condon live action remake, and it actually looks pretty good. Alan Menken returned to do the score, and is not only incorporating a few of the classics, but is actually making new songs for the film with Tim Rice! It's unlikely any of the Broadway songs will be incorporated, except maybe "Human Again" from the 2002 special edition DVD. Emma Watson isn't a bad choice for Belle, I hope her vocal lessons with Paige O'Hara(The original voice of Belle) pay off.

People thought Belle was too perfect. I noticed quite a couple of flaws that Belle has. One is the fact that she chooses to isolate herself from society, Two is that she is too curious and ends up disobeying people to satisfy her curiosity, Three she is a bit too defensive I mean it is ok to stand up for what you believe in but she was a bit harsh and quick to fight rather than listen and make a compromise. I liked Belle because I have similar issues and yet have similar traits like being intelligent and love learning.

Touko White i think that whole fiasco was because they needed a reason for beast to help belle. and for that to help them to start to interact with each other. sooner or latter it would´ve come to an argument, with them living in the same castle and with all the tension from how she got stuck in the castle, still sitting between them. with the west-wing-saving-and- shouting match, they got that off their chests and could move on,and start to see the other sides of the other one.

Doug agrees with the fact that Belle is "too perfect". He and other people think she should have a couple flaws for development, but it's the beast that is supposed to have the flaws and have a change of heart. Belle is the person that softens his heart and makes him realize how short tempered and selfish he was. Like he said, this movie is perfect.

Belle isn't perfect good yes perfect know. She is very curious and bit nosy after being told repeatedly no west wing that's where she goes. Also Belle has a bit of a temper. She quips back at beast temper several times as well as showing gaston her temper subtly. She didn't shout but made it clear she was very angry. She even almost snaps at her dad when he suggest Gaston.

do u think his name is adam because they were thinking of adam and eve, because adam was the first man ( you know, if you believe that.) and the beast goes from beast to man? and did they say that was his name in the movie, or is that from the original story? or did the fan base just make it up or something, because i knew that was his name, but i dont know why i know that because i dont think it was said in the movie.

+Josie Alyvia supposedly the name adam came from a disney quiz board game, where that was the answer. and disney just decided to run with it. pretty weird if you ask me, i mean first off, how are the players supposed to know that since it´s never mentioned in the movie(s)? speaking of which, supposedly the animators/writers never realized the problem until they came to the scene near the end where belle calls out to the beast, and realized " yeah,,,we should maybe have given him an actual name", but at the point it was to late, so,,, and not to mention: pretty much every character has a french sounding name, but,,,adam? furthermore, a royal member named adam in France?

Honestly the Design for the Human version of Beast isn't that bad, I really think the reason people think so is cause of how he is drawn when we see him for the very first time at 4:20. His nose isn't there but his nostrils are huge. In every other shot he looks fine, but the first time we see him...yeah i'd be lying if i said he looked a little off.

I feel like this movie was a good example of female empowerment without necessarily shoving it into people's faces a ton. Her character was her own and unique, not the archetypical " I'm a woman and I'm better than a man" scenario. Very well done, getting its point across almost seamlessly without just making it glaringly obvious. I feel that media needs more of this type of female character rather than in your face or real obvious archetyping. And they have too, I mean if you all have seen Aliens with Sigourney Weaver, she demonstrates a very strong and empowered female character while also accentuating her feminine attributes, such as in the maternal instincts she demonstrates toward Newt. Characters like these really accentuate the valuable characteristics women have, demonstrating their strengths without being "in your face" or (on occasion) unrealistic. Anyways this is just my opinion really, and clearly I think its interesting, but other thoughts are welcome too :)

+Gooday Finesir This. We need movies where someone is a PERSON. Sure, they can be female or male and have some typically male or female traits, but we need to see them as people. People who happen to be of a gender, but that's not the focus. That's the problem. You never have to force women empowerment if they'd just be a person, not a pair of boobs and not just a love interest.

I never understood why Gaston wants Belle so much. Sure, she's beautiful, but she loves reading, doesn't want a man, and is extremely curious, all of which are traits Gaston would hate. All three of the girls at 1:00 are beautiful, and knowing Gaston, he probably would have picked one of them. All of them are willing, and since Gaston would probably be more lustful and care less about personality than beauty, I don't see why Gaston would chase for Belle THAT long.
@Caxkj0

Gaston says his reasons himself he says that belle is the best looking girl in the village and I quote "that makes her the best, and don't I deserve the best" he wants to marry her simply because he feels he deserves it and furthermore because everyone else in the village sycophanticaly sucks up to him and always tells him how he's so wonderful and brilliant and perfect in every single way the idea that she might turn him down is inconceivable to him so when she does it turns simple infatuation into an obsession the deserving the best thing already makes you think he's a dick but as you watch him go on you realize when belle calls him a monster there's no doubt in your mind that she's right

I don't understand why people can call this film perfect when the beast is so unlikable. After the way he treats Belle's father, and later on Belle herself, I really didn't seem to care if he turned back into human or not. I did by the time Gaston fought him, but that's a lot of buildup for that one moment.

Actually that is a Disney myth. There are lots of people who are serious Disney lovers out there that truly believe his name is Adam because of a Trivia game Disney put out several years ago, but the fact is false. In reality, the filmmakers didn't even notice they hadn't given Beast a name until the part where Belle is on the roof and calls out "Beast!" at the end of the film. One thing that did confuse me about this film is that I don't think it's ever brought up how the gossipy, intrigued town never seem to be curious about Belle vanishing for an unspecified period of time. So, Maurice tells them she's been captured by a beast, and understandably enough, they dismiss it as crazed ramblings. But surely someone would notice she's been gone for ages, right...? Is that ever touched upon? I can't really remember...

Fun fact: Actually, if you get the DVD of Beauty and the Beast, the producers while on the commentary while they were talking about the beast's transformation, they said that they forgot his name so it's just Beast. His name is Adam. But it's not. The makers of the movie didn't say it was technically. The fans made it up. So we don't know his name.

The best animated film of all time. Hand drawn animation will ALWAYS be superior to CGI, it's magic that comes directly from an artist's hands to the screen. Cannot be topped. It's literally the closest thing to real magic the human race has ever done, and this film is the best expression and proof of this. The Disney Co had been trying to get this tale to the screen since the late 1930's, and it was worth the wait. Walt himself would NO doubt be proud as hell of this film.

The thing that gets me is that Bell DOES care what others think about her. Sure in public she acts like it but in private she asks her Dad: do you think I'm odd? So Doug is wrong on this sadly. But to his credit it's a detail thats often overlooked as her dad has a big breack threw mins later.

Well, I would say, as someone who also generally does not care what people think, there are always some moments of wondering. There will always be some moments when I want to be liked or popular, but it is not my general mode of thinking or what drives me. Honestly, I think it's just a human thing. Everyone feels that way at some point or other, but there are those who let it consume them and those who don't. Belle is obviously one of the ones that does not let popularity consume her.

Beauty and the Beast, in terms of its source material is really quite varied. Villeneuve's version (which was the predecessor to the most popular version by Le Prince Beaumont from which this Disney take is mostly derived) can be seen as trying to educate young women about the nature of love between adults, arranged marriages were the norm and women were in the dark about adult relationships. It's a popular interpretation that the beast represents the carnal, passionate side of love which is expressed through sex. But in all versions, he treats Belle with kindness and eventually turns into a prince who represents the nurturing, intimate side of love. Villeneuve's version was about reconciling the two sides and helping women understand that both these aspects are present in romantic love and that they shouldn't be frightened of it. Le Prince Beaumont's version which was aimed at children stressed the importance of kindness towards people, regardless and yes, not to judge someone based on their appearance. This fairytale is more intelligent than most and that's one of the reasons it translated so well to a film in our modern age. I don't believe it condones violence within a relationship or Stockholm syndrome in any of the incarnations of the tale. Just acceptance.

If you think about it, a lot of Disney movies don't say how long the romance was until they got married. For example, Ariel wanted to be a human anyway, before she met Eric, so it's fair that she turned human at the end of the movie and wore the sparkley purple dress. How long from when her and Eric twirled on the beach was their wedding? it could have been a year. Who knows? Beauty and the Beast feels more spaced out and the movie did a good job at that. But how long was LeFou stuck inside that snowman at Belle's house waiting for them to come back? It couldn't have been long. A few days? When they sang the song "Gaston," Belle's dad came rushing back from the castle for help. Gaston was fired up about marrying Belle so he went to the house right away and when they weren't there told LeFou to not move until they got back. That's basically at the beginning of the movie. Everything that happened with Belle and the Beast, all up until the time after they have the ballroom dance and then Belle finds her dad with the mirror and gets home, LeFou is sitting there. Who even minds if Disney romances happen fast? It's a fairy tale. No one takes it literally but the movies are beautiful and the couples are so romantic and happy and FICTIONAL so it shouldn't matter. I don't really like the Frozen jabs at classic Disney. It's kinda too sassy and unnecessary.

Yet another classic case of someone reducing this wonderful movie to a case of 'Stockholm Syndrome' and 'Bestiality'. Belle doesn't immediately fall in love with her captor, she actually stands up to him and doesn't take his crap. It's only after he saves her that she starts to see him in a different light. Bestiality? GMAFB. The most intimate they got was during the dance scene, she didn't even kiss him until AFTER he turned back into a human.

Speaking as someone who isn't a huge fan of this film, the only real flaw is after Beast gets injured by the wolves, Belle somehow lifted him onto her horse to get him back to the castle. There is _no way_ she's that strong. At least the live action version fixed this flaw. It's far from perfect, but it did fix most of the plot holes of this one.

Haha I saw that too but honestly, what bothered me the most was that everyone praised this story for showing how to look past exterior and to fall in love for the inside yet the whole time they were trying to turn the prince back to his old self. On top of that, if he was already going to turn into a "handsome prince" then the whole premise just kinda destroys itself from the beginning

I dont think this movie is perfect, it has some flaws which actually make it unwatchable for me now 1. Simply the fact that the Beast was cursed because he turned down an old lady because she was ugly and in the end he got the most beautiful girl in town. Man, I really dont like this one, the beast was supposed to learn to look behind the appearance but he never had to do that to get his happy ending. 2. Belle is actually really disrespectful. Just take the "west-wing" (is that how it is called in english?) scene. The Beast told her that she can walk around *the WHOLE castle* no problem, this is now her new home BUT she is not allowed to enter the west-wing but she does it anyways! For how much she knows those could be the beast privat chambers and she really shouldnt go into these. Yeah yeah I know she is his prisoner but dont forget that she gave herself for her fathers place, shes only there because the Beast set her father free and toke her offer, so no, she should respect the Beasts possible privat chambers. But my real problem with this actually is that this is never mentioned again, she should have learned from her disrespectfulness but the movie pretens like *she was right* and I hate that! 3. The plotholes. Oh my GAD *the PLOTHOLES* I really cant watch this movie anymore because NOTHING makes sense whatsoever! I just cant, the movie isnt even trying! This is a movie where everything seems fine *until* you think about it and I always do that, so this movie became unwatchable for me

I do like this movie for the most part, but there are two glaring flaws that enrages me to no end: the Enchantress and Belle's "Never My Fault" behavior while she's tending to the beast's arm. The Enchantress is the REAL villain of this movie. She cursed a little boy (the servants mention that they've been cursed for 10 years, and the prologue said the rose would bloom until his 21st year) for refusing a rose he had absolutely no reason to accept as payment even if he wasn't a spoiled, selfish brat; and the fact that she went out of her way to appear as an old crone implies she KNEW he would fail her "test" and thus give her a pathetic excuse to not only curse him, but his servants as well (even Chip). Some have argued that she was punishing the servants for spoiling the prince, but why a child, too? And, again, the prince was also a child, so how could he have known any better? For all he knew, she was just a scary old woman trying to invade his house. Even worse, she goes above and beyond "necessary" by making it almost impossible for him to break the curse: in addition to his appearance, she makes the castle look frightening and makes the ability to even reach it a difficult task in and of itself, what with the scary forest and hungry wolves prowling around; and she installs a time limit. (deep breath) At least in the original story, the enchantress wasn't portrayed as in the right: she cursed the prince for rejecting her advances. It was a petty act and was depicted as such. And there wasn't a time limit on the curse, either. Here, she's very much what TV Tropes would call a "Designated Hero", cursing a small child and everyone he knows for an extremely petty reason and suffering no well-deserved punishment for her horrible misdeeds. The live-action remake did it even worse. As for Belle, I hated that she didn't take responsibility for her actions after the wolf attack. To those of you who say that the beast should have learned to control his temper, I'll ask you this: how would you like it if someone went into your room against your specific instructions and started touching your stuff? You wouldn't like it, would you? You'd be mad, wouldn't you? I agree his fuse is too short, but his anger is 100% justified and Belle had no right to change the subject like that. If she'd acknowledged her actions were wrong and apologized for them, it would have fixed everything for me.
