I never blamed Jim Varney in these movies. It was a bad, half-baked script. If you were Jim Varney (who was mainly in commercials), would you pass up a chance to be the lead in a series of movies? But God rest, Jim Varney. He was extremely talented.

He was also a really good classically trained actor, he could recite Shakespeare off the top of his head. He was pretty much stuck with the Ernest character after it got popular.

Ernest Goes to Camp also brought us the concept of eggs erroneous...but for contrast lets not forget that Jim Varney was also a Shakespearean trained actor and was VERY good at it as well.

I adore Ernest and I love ALL his movies. Yes, they're stupid, but that's the damn point. Just enjoy them! I would take Ernest any day over ANY other comedic movie, like Dumb & Dumber or just anything at all. Ernest is amazing. May he rest in peace. My favorites would likely be Ernest Saves Christmas and Slam Dunk Ernest.

+Aussieroth7 Ernest scared stupid and Ernest rides again are my favorites, Ernest scared stupid because it was legitimately a great Halloween movie/comedy and Ernest rides again, becasue the ballad of the Worrell's at the intro and the film is genuinely funny as heck. and Ernest goes to jail is also pretty funny and shows a great dual role of Jim varney playing lovable dumb witted Ernest and brutal crime boss Mr. Nash.

Towards the end, you guys bring up a good point in feeling that the '90s got a delayed start in terms of culture and fashion trends. I think this is true of decades in general, in the sense that when you look back on a decade, you'll find that traits associated with that decade may not get going right away. For example, disco didn't become mainstream until around 1974, even though it's associated with that decade in general. It's the momentum of technology, culture, and major events of preceding years rolling into later ones. This is a good explanation for why many consider the early '90s to include 1993 and sometimes even 1994, even though numerically those years fall into the middle portion of the decade. (Numerically, the end of '94/start of '95 is the decade's midpoint; 1993 is as close to the middle as 1996, and 1994 is as close to the middle as 1995.)

***** i do apologise if i come across rude but It's just that i hate when people say stuff like "we were there last generation to have fun" when other kids in the 2000s and even now, kids are also having more fun with their lives and yes you're right, the world is changing (either for the better or worst, depends how you look at it).

+DAK4Blizzard That's because culture and society don't magically change right on the nice, clean round number like every 10 years exactly lol. The decades definitely blend into each other and influences from the previous one lasts into the next one. Starting always from 00, 10, 20, 30, etc isn't always the best one to divide up the eras. Sometimes the changes happen like 1994-2004 like you were saying about the 70s. It doesn't always line up cleanly with our arbitrary number system and how we like to divide things up by 10, lol.
@downsouth420

Well, what happens is the underground catches up with society. Look at grunge. It started in the late 80s by people sick of the 80s commercialism, and by the early 90s, it caught up with mainstream society. The grunge mentality slowly caught on, and people in general moved away from the "Me" mentality and embraced grunge and alternative instead of synth pop and hair bands. Then, everything became the exact opposite of the 80s: big hair was out, clothes became more earthy rather than neon, pants became baggy, rollerblading replaced skateboarding, people started to give a crap about the environment. By the mid-90s, the internet was introduced to the masses via AOL disks, and that planted a seed which created the .com boom where anybody could create a BS website and become millionaires by simply owning a website. By the late 90s, some guy created Napster which was a hub for people to share MP3s. It's popularity created a shift towards downloading music instead of buying cds. A couple of years later, movies were put in the mix, and broadband was introduced to allow affordable high speed internet (before, high speed internet meant leasing a T1/3 line which was like $1000 a month). Cell phones were starting to become affordable enough, and in very little time very basic internet was offered for cell phones. Then, 3G came out for cellphones. PDAs became the business rage, and were replaced by early smart phones, like the Blackberry. Soon, Apple released an iPod with phone capabilities and called it the iPhone. That created a huge shift which resulted in today's society. I know I'm ranting, so I'll stop. But my point is that small events can turn society into something unrecognizable in a few years, but it happens in a way we don't recognize until after the fact. Keep in mind, many people in the very early 80s still dressed and acted like it was the 70s. Disco didn't end abruptly but instead evolved into house music (as well as Italo-disco and Hi-NRG which became Eurobeat). Perhaps I'm not being very clear about what I'm saying...

I'm not an 80's or 90's kid (born in 1993, so the bulk of my nostalgic memories are from after the new millennium), but these movies are very nostalgic to me for a very odd reason: My family used to own a summer cottage on Garbriola Island (Just off the coast of Vancouver Island in the southwestern region of British Columbia) where we'd spend every summer where we had an old, crappy, 12-inch RCA TV (that had a green filter over everything for some weird reason) and there was an ancient video store on the island that still exclusively rented VHS's (in the early 2000's it wasn't uncommon to still see VHS's being rented, but there where no DVDs whatsoever, bizarre thinking about that now) and all of them were ancient as hell and among this strange archive of magnetic tape media was a cornucopia of Ernest movies and me, my brother and my dad absolutely loved them! We'd always pop one on at the end of the day after doing something wonderful or summer related (ie. fishing, hiking, picnic, day long road trip, swimming, visiting friends, all that good shit), nine-year old me would be sipping a can of sprite, my five-year old brother would be playing with shells that he found on the beach, my parents would chilling with glasses of wine (I think my dad laughed the most at these movies, oddly enough) and you could see the sun setting over the cove in the massive window behind the TV. Some of the best nostalgia that you can get from something generally isn't the thing itself, but rather the memories surrounding that. True, the Ernest movies are crap (still get a chuckle out of me sometimes though), but I'd watch them a million times over just for those precious memories they drag back up from the forgotten innocent childhood portion of my miserable adult brain.

I wasn't there, but If I were to say where I believed the nineties truly started, it would have been after the release of Nirvana "Nevermind". Like it or not, the music scene literally changed overnight after it and resulted in a massive shift in the youth culture. The eighties slowly died out after that and finally died in 1993 with the release of jurassic park (something legendary enough to define a new era).

I picked up Hey,Vern, It's Earnest from a bargain bin about a year ago and binge-watched it. Something I realized fairly quickly seeing them all in a row rather than with a week in between: Each episode was about 25% story-driven and 75% the same jokes every episode (particular offenders were the barbershop gag, Amazo the magician, and of course 'Loni Don's School of Hollywood Sound Effects).'

I actually liked Scared Stupid, even upon recent viewings (though, nostalgia is undoubtedly a huge factor). As mentioned in the review, the TV show with Ernest was much more sporadic and strange, jumping from character to character. I think that's where the perceived weirdness in Scared Stupid comes from. While different from the previous Ernest movies, it felt a little more like the original show. Not to mention that I love the sort of hammy confidence that Jim Varney has on screen.

I was about five when I watched this movie. I didn't know that it was supposed to be a comedy, and I remember it being the scariest movie I had ever watched up until I saw "Alien" several years later as a teenager. If I went back and watched it now, I probably wouldn't flinch at any of this, but at least I can say, nostalgically, that I have a very fond memory of this movie traumatizing me (in an acceptable way).

Glad to see you two never flat out hated Ernest, never understood the hate he gets. Varney was always awesome even if he had crap to work with and made the films fun at least on his end. He never got his proper due as an actor. Camp-Jail were the best ones really with Jail being the absolute best. Varney getting to do 2 characters plus Tex Cobb and the story made it flat out awesome. Scared Stupid's alright but nowhere as good. I see what you mean by it being too scary. I liked it to a point as a kid but that Troll scared the hell out of when I first seen it at age 3. The tone's really dark too. Not a pretty film by any means. Plus not having Bobby in it hurt it. Rides Again's a good return to the formula. It's cheap as hell but fun. After that is when the series went down. Only one I ever liked of the DTV was the one with Abdul Jabbar in it due to the basketball scenes. The last two movies are sad to watch because you can see Varney wasn't feeling well or at his best and that makes the ending to Ernest Joins the Army much sadder. RIP Jim.

if you haven't ever seen it there is a compilation of short skits jim did called 'hey vern its my family album" if you can find it, it is one of the best things he did. also if you want just plain crazy, insane, weird look for one called 'Dr Otto and the riddle of the gloom beam" both are before he did 'goes to camp'. I loved ernest when I was a kid and we would rent the vhs of his commercials for my birthdays...ahh good times.

I always thought the montage of characters in Goes To Jail was him trying to get into character for his disguises.

i felt like Ernest Goes to Camp was the best, but that's obviously looking back through rose-colored lenses. I put home-made parachutes on some of my toy turtles after watching that movie.

Fun fact: Jim Varney did play a terrorist in one of the 3 ninjas movies. also... Ernest Scared Stupid is actually decent, it has great practical effects and a couple really great / funny parts. Give it another shot.

The parts of Ernest Scared stupid that stuck with me the most was the ending with the Trolls getting killed with Milk and just the word "Miak" - It's one of the most bizarrely written, yet somehow surprisingly memorable made up words ever.

You guys are absolutely right. Back in the 90's I wanted to rent some Ernest movies from Blockbuster and my parents were like, "No. Absolutely not." And I never understood why they wouldn't let me lol.

The animatronic troll puppet rigs in "Ernest Scared Stupid" were actually designed by the Chiodo Bros. same people who directed and designed the Klowns in "Killer Klowns From Outer Space", in fact, they even reused the old Klown molds to make the troll puppets. No wonder they seemed familiar to you Lol.

The other "Troll" Designs outside of Trantor were repurposed masks from "Killer Klowns from Outer Space" that were slightly altered and painted a different color to match the main troll's skin tone.

The only thing I liked about Ernest Goes To Africa is the awesome mechanical suit he uses to collect firewood. Someone make a Megaman fan art of that now!
