Will Smith was 25 or 26 yrs old when that Aunt Viv stuff happened. But had been living the HipHop life since he was 18. Young minded. Immature. Aunt Viv was a well educated, classically trained 39 yr old. There’s no way an adult almost 40 can rely on a 20-something yr old to have control over their fate. In reality, that expectation is flawed from the beginning. As the saying goes, “If you want something right, do it yourself.” Esp when it’s your livelihood at stake.

The reason I can't go for that is because everybody can't go for it. What about the construction worker, the hairstylist, or artist. They all just get a check. People will profit forever on things they create. They get a check and nothing more. The artist may start a company to start paying actors to do acting jobs but don't look for Hollywood to change. It would be a perfect world if because you created something, you get a residual of it the rest of your life. Those people saw that coming.

I disagree with him about that Will Smith situation. Will had nothing to do with how that woman handled her business! She was the one who had that conversation with producers of the show. She was the one who demanded a specific amount or else. The producers picked the or else option. Will isn’t the blame for any of that. A contract for one person does not mean it will be identical for any others! Each contract is structured specifically to each artist. This is music, movies, or tv. You won’t see them offer Denzel and some up and coming actor the same rate/contract! Denzel will have a much more extensive deal as he would usually be the face of said project. This was the case with Will. With or without the supporting cast, the show was centered around Will! That man shouldn’t have to forego his contractual obligations because a cast member is upset with their own contract negotiations. That is on them and their attorney(s) only!

It's not a partnership. If we partners that means you put up what I put into it. That's why I said what you're talking about is different. You asked these people to put millions of their dollars up they will look at you crazy. That's why you just get a check. A movie is millions to be made. There have only been a few actors that put up their own money and are still making money off that movie.

Most of these guys came in the game and hired lawyers and used the exact same “standard contract.” Okay cool. But, it’s up to you to improve your business practices and update your means to more ethical means as you learn more. In the case of somebody like Puffy, they were giving them same contracts out for 25 years. Dude even had Cassie signed to forever slave deal. You owe me like 7 albums and I’m never gon’ let you put out more than 1 or 2. No excuses at that point, it’s business, but it’s still dirty. Some Black people owned slaves. Some owned slaves because that was the only way to keep them protected from being kidnapped or whatever. Because property had more protections than Humans. But then others owned slaves because…. They wanted to be like the white slave owners, and make money. Puffy wanted to be like Clive Davis. BUT… yes… as Mecc says… it’s up to YOU to negotiate and protect yourself in negotiations.
@iunderstanphotography2780
@iunderstanphotography2780 Күн бұрын
This is true, but there is often duress in these situations. I just watched a vid on the Power Rangers. They had a bad contract and when they brought it up, they were threatened “there are 200 kids out there who would take this job…” do you wall away and miss your dream job (at the time) or sign and work? It’s a hard choice In terms of music, there are enough cautionary tales from 2-3+generations of bad deal for you to know better, from the 70s to Pebbles and TLC, you know it’s a bad deal, and you can’t anticipate how things evolve. Like Keenan said, Beetlejuice had success for 40 years!! None of the actors thought to her residual deals. They’re looking to work and move on to the next project
