By making him go and open the door, the monster actually gave him a chance to escape. If you know someone (something) wierd is in the viccinity of your house, and you find clear evidence of someone breaking inn, then using such an opportunity to get away wouldn't be a bad idea. From the outside, you'd be in a much better position to handle the situation, for example by calling cops or going inn again prepeared with a weapon. It would give you a chance to ambush them (it) as you returned, rather than the other way around.
