I don't know why you bother to engage with those negative commenters. He says he doesn't understand why you're interested in "dead" formats like VHS, but has clearly watched the video on that very subject and felt the need to comment. I personally love your content. I watch and enjoy (pretty-much) every video you publish, and I know how much work and effort goes into creating this content. Thank you.

Back when Intel slot 1 was a thing, we had problems with machines using socket-to-slot adaptors being unreliable. Reseating the cpu fixed it for a while, but the machine would fail again. The service tech said to clean the edge-connector with a piece of paper. Just fold over the edge connector, and with moderate pressure, scrub side-to-side. The paper polishes the contacts. That also works for dirty slots. Fold the paper so it fits snugly in the slot or flex socket, then press it straight in and out of the connector. Never scrub side-to-side else you might bend the contacts. Card works for bigger slots. Crud in the air forms varnish in connectors. it doesm't take much to stop a cpu from running.

Yes, that's a 'trick' I was taught many years ago too... variations include wetting a suitably-resilient piece with switch cleaner. RS used to sell 'pink strips' for cleaning relays; tough paper impregnated with some sort of 'oil' (as far as I can tell) - they were very handy for bigger slots and edge connectors.

Great video. As a matter of course, I clean any connector before reconnecting no matter how clean it looks. I am pretty sure it saved me some repair headaches 🙂

The problem tends to be earthing around the head amplifier, a common problem with some machines in the past. (The Sanyo 5000 and 5150 even had a bulletin about the problem) The solution usually was to add a wire loop, as you you tried, but at the point of the copper spring earth and the PCB contacts it rests on. The earth may well measure ok on ohms, but any slight resistance can introduce noise into the very sensitive head amplifiers. The noise seen is usually from either the capstan motor, or, more often, the head drum motor. Once a machine with the problem was disturbed it could take weeks for it to show again. I worked on nothing but VCR's from the early 80's, from the first piano key machines, until the demise of tape recorders as we knew them in the 2000's with the last of the Funai junk. A very satisfying (but also frustrating at times) job that I miss.

With those flexi cables, if there is enough valid cable there, sometimes you can trim a TINY bit off the end to allow it to push in slightly past the problem area.

I did that recently on a professional JVC deck. But there's no spare cable on this one.

Secam is a stupid standard but of course stubborn french have to be different to the rest of europe, don't they. They think SECAM is better but it isn't.

I have a machine that exhibits a similar problem, not white streaks/dots though but random Red, Green, and Blue dots. Could that be a similar issue?
@video99coukАй бұрын
How odd. I suspect that to be a fault elsewhere. Start by doing some tests like, what happens in freeze-frame, are the menus affected, does it affect signals passing through the machine from an external source. These things all help to locate the source of the noise.
@joshzwies3601Ай бұрын
@video99couk the issue only appears while playing a tape, it also affects recordings and is still present in freeze frame. Input video through AV and RF look fine. Comparing with a working machine, it looks like the picture is missing an entire field.

Does it have a good picture if you use the format conversion feature? IIRC 12V Dave said it either has pixelated image or the frame rate is stuttering during conversion with these. Aiwa have a similar model, I think that's the worst, practically unusable for archiving, the Panasonic AG-W1 also has quite mediocre picture he said. I think se said these Samsungs have the best picture, but still not perfect, with noticable frame rate problems and/or digital image artifacts.
@video99coukАй бұрын
I wouldn't use it for PAL to NTSC conversion or vice versa, it's best to capture in the same TV standard as the recording. But where this machine is super-useful, is SECAM to PAL conversion, for which it does a good job. SECAM colour on VHS is never great, not on any of the SECAM VHS machines I've tried anyway, but it's certainly one of the best for SECAM playback. By converting to PAL, there's no frame/line rate changes, and it's much easier to set up a digitisation system for PAL than it is SECAM.
@mrnmrn1Ай бұрын
@@video99couk Fortunately my capture cards all support SECAM, but soon that won't matter much as I plan to use the HDMI output of my Sony DVD-Recorder that I currently use as a TBC, and capture the HDMI signal instead of composite or S-Video. The problem for me will be to find a VCR that can play French SECAM VHS tapes. Almost all PAL VHS VCRs can play back MESECAM tapes, but not French SECAM. I have an ancient Hitachi VT39 multisystem VHS which can do French SECAM but it was dropped and quite badly damaged, probably has a crack on the front panel board. I want to repair it but I have so much other things to do. Not that it's very likely that I'll come across a French SECAM tape, but I want to play with it, and compare it to MESECAM. I have tons of MESECAM VHS recordings, and to me it looks better than PAL! At least it has less chroma noise on solid surfaces of saturated colours.

I have a Samsung SV-300W that is also a multi system machine like that one and it's working fine. But there is someting i dont't understand. It has two s-video sockets out and in, but can't read tapes recorded in s-vhs mode.
@njm1971nycАй бұрын
I believe you can use this deck as a standards converter, line in to line out, without using the VHS deck. I imagine the results are slightly better using s-video rather than composite. S-VHS and S-Video do generally go hand-in-hand, but they're not in an exclusive relationship 😄 S-Video likes to do its own thing sometimes. You might, for example, want to standards-convert a DVD or Hi8 tape, viewed on a TV with S-Video input. Worth noting is that some equipment will block macrovision-protected sources via composite, but will pass it quite happily via S-Video. Not a rule, by any means, but I've seen it on a few bits of gear.
@richjames2540Ай бұрын
S-video connectors (Y/C) simply split the luminance and chroma signals to avoid contamination. S-vhs or Super Beta or Hi 8 are enhanced recording systems which can take full advantage of the cleaner signal but the presence of Y-C does not mean it has S-VHS Super Beta or Hi 8 recording capability. I believe the lack of S-VHS, Super Beta or Hi 8 multi standard recorders are due to the difference in solution to increase the resolution and chroma detail based on the positive and negative sides of each standard.

It's a pet hate of mine, to call an S-Video connector an SVHS connector, that's wrong and even Panasonic point that out in some manuals. S-Video connectors are used with DVD, Hi8, SuperBeta, miniDV, DVCPRO, BetacamSP, MII, various other devices like timebase correctors, standards converters, titling equipment, cameras and no doubt more as well.
@Capturing-MemoriesАй бұрын
S-Video stands for Separate Video, S-VHS stands for Super VHS, two different things, However you can't take full advantage of S-VHS without displaying it over S-Video, composite gives you only a marginal advantage of S-VHS quality compared to the regular VHS. In the other hand S-Videos has an advantage in quality of displaying VHS contents over it compared to composite, although I've seen people disagreeing with this statement.

@@video99couk On the front behind the flap there is a drawing of the options for the selector switch, but the SECAM difference is only on the tape and not on the connection cable. It is the only affordable S-Video PAL/SECAM (and vice versa) converter.
