Disagree. You should only do skills that you’re clearly safe to do with or without extra mats. Don’t just throw risky skills and hoping an extra inch of padding will lower the risk of injury.

Actually it's quite the contrary, permitting an extra mat could lead the gymnast to a false sense of security in attempting more risky skills

I agree, because landing without a mat feels so harsh! I tried to land without a mat once and my breath was almost gone. 😆 I'm an amateur gymnasts tho, so I can use whatever I want, but the most difficult elements done on FX floor without a mat must feel harsh.

No. In fact, this just happened in the 2021 Men's Olympic AA final. The eventual silver medalist got back onto the podium and celebrated, and received a -.3 deduction. In the end, it didn't change whether he became the Olympic Champion, but it was still silly (on both ends - the rule is silly, but gymnasts/coaches should know better).

Zou Jingyuan and Xiao Ruoteng of China forgot to salute twice at the Tokyo Olympics and lost 0.3 each time. I think a system of warnings would be fairer: you do it once, you get a warning. You do it twice, you lose 0.3 (or more). But it’s unfair to penalize gymnasts so harshly on a technicality. Especially in men’s gymnastics where most international competitions (teams or individual AA) have been won by a couple of tenths these last few years. The Code of Points is full of illogical and nonsensical rules anyway.
