Japan also has this problem: people just aren't interested in others, and definitely not in a relationship. It's so bad there that the population is in a steep *decline*, and will shrink 30% over the next few decades. Here's the thing: When interviewed, almost all Japanese men and women cited one big factor: lack of time. Specifically, they said they wanted to focus more on themselves than other people. These people yearn more for success and achievement than intimacy, which also explains their high stress levels and suicide rates. I'm not sure if social media specifically has caused this sudden hunger for success, but the rest of the world is following suit in "work first, pleasure later."

This is a thing for advanced societies and ties in with TFR (total fertility rates) and understanding this will make you chuckle at people saying the world will be overpopulated. It won’t if you modernize poor societies to make sure their offspring don’t die and bring them into the fold. The US has a shrinking TFR and every modern society will follow suit with Japan. It’s why immigration is needed in every country. Not saying that there is not a problem there, just saying that it comes with the territory of every advanced society.

I think a big part of the story left out of this is Porn. Porn is readily available on your phone anytime you want, any kind of girl/guy you want, and zero emotional risk or vulnerability. I also think it erodes our ability to really be present and experience the real thing with a partner. What I meant by my comment is that relationships and intimacy are really hard work and porn is easy. And like most areas of life most young men are sadly choosing the easier road.

Daniel r I disagree with ur assessment. Porn can definitely ruin sex life with partner. Especially if u r with that person for a long time. U will always want something that is newer and fresher. My theory is, the major factor creating the drought in sex is the all time high rates of depression we are experiencing, which are especially prevalent in younger generations. This might be isolated to my personal experiences, but as an 18-29 y.o. male not having sex, I can tell you it is mostly due to personal feelings of inadequacy. I am not who I want to be, so why approach a girl (or guy for some) who has better options than myself. Confidence is key, and I don't have it. Edit: thank you to everyone for the kind words and advice. Obviously change won't happen overnight but I'll definitely use some of the tips I've gotten to better myself and my perception of myself.

Don't listen to feminist and don't believe that "toxic masculinity" exist and you will be fine. We just have to agree now that men role in society is no longer to be a provider (since both people in relationship will have to work in order to pay bills - this is sad reality) and it was completely normal for men to provide for their women, but don't think about it - just remember that at one point you will have to show that your values are more valuable to you than being with ANYONE which will add value to yourself, since men that bend their believes for others are weak - and this is absolutely repulsive for women.

I think it's hard to meet some one outside of work and school now a days. I met my current boyfriend on Tinder and we've been together for 4.5 years. It's the mindset you have to create going into to using the dating apps to get what you want out of it. I use to use them to get my "mojo" back when i was in a dating slump, no i was not sleeping around, but i would start a conversation with someone i didn't know and wouldn't have the option of meeting working 12 + hours a day. (i'm not a fan of dating where i work) I do think you can build a relationship over the internet, but true intimacy involves more senses than just emoji's and one liners. I love the internet for allowing me to continue a long distance relationship and feel closer to the person, but nothing and replace the feeling you have just holding someones hand or reaching over for a kiss.

Honestly, I think that this is a way more complicated issue than some might believe. Allow me to explain why I think this is happening. 1. Social media. There is NO doubt that social media contributes to this problem. These days, you are expected to always show your life from the best point of view online. Everyone is desperately posting their best pictures on Instagram, trying to make their lives look like a fucking romance novel. Everything has to be perfect, down to the smallest of details. You have to make people believe that your life is totally awesome, even if you're actually on tough times and struggling. This kind of mindset has forced a lot of people out of the game. Its no secret that guys generally tend to spend less time on social media than girls, and more on games and porn websites. This makes a whole lot of guys a lot more unattractive to women, because they see that these guys don't have a lot of social media clout. Their lives aren't portrayed as fantasies, and they aren't constantly flexing the fact that they go on vacations or have a lot of friends. 2. This brings us to the second issue, and that is porn. I believe that porn really does ruin sex for a lot of people. Not only does it portray unrealistic sexual situations, leading to disappointment when one finally experiences the real thing, it also makes it a whole lot easier for guys to go without a girlfriend. Why bother running the risk of getting rejected by a girl when you can just sit down on the toilet and spank one out to porn any time you want? 3. Finally, the third issue. Unrealistic expectations. I genuinely do believe that girls (and guys, although to a lesser extent) have too high standards these days. Everyone is walking around thinking that they are unwilling to settle for less than perfect. If you are a young guy in 2019 that isn't ripped, doesn't have a lot of money or struggle with social situations, you are basically fucked. Better luck next time, because most girls won't look your way unless you try to make your life seem perfect or have a great body. As a closing note, I would like everyone who reads this to search up the song "Lower Your Expectations" by Bo Burnham here on KZbin. It really captures the essence of what I'm trying to say here. Also, it is hella funny.

I think, especially for that 18 to 29 age group, there is also a chilling effect caused by the me too movement and how it can be a very confusing and frightening time to even try to approach someone you like, especially in a university or work setting. I'm not trying to say that the me too movement is not necessary or justified, only that our culture has not yet figured out how to establish fairness. We're in a period of transition, where there is sometimes collateral damage. There are men, who are well meaning people, that in the past might have asked someone they liked out on a date, that in this new social landscape opt not to. The new reality, that harassment has little to do with intent and everything to do with perception is problematic. For example, if I ask a woman out on a date, and she says "no." It seems like that would be the end of it, but there are people on both sides of this hypothetical interaction that take it a step further... Just as there are men who don't accept a "no" and ask again and again, justifying the whole cultural shift we are experiencing, there are women that feel threatened and uncomfortable simply to have been asked once in an environment such as work or school where they may have to be around the person they rejected. Many workplaces and schools view this as harassment because the woman in this situation has been made uncomfortable by being approached in a perfectly normal and what used to be acceptable manner. The results can end careers or result in expulsion from university. What man in his right mind would choose to accept that risk and social stigma?
@cbrocks365 жыл бұрын
Fair enough. The reality is, though, from a woman’s standpoint, we’re also dealing with that reality. We deal with this almost daily when a guy gives an unwanted catcall or advance in some respect. Every single woman you have ever met has at one point in her life probably was a victim of some type of sexual assault or abuse. That’s a jarring statistic. It’s way too high. There’s obviously nothing wrong with approaching a woman you’re interested in, but if she turns you down, respect her wishes. She should be able to feel comfortable in her environment, just like men should be. Think about this the next time you want to approach a woman.
@FallofftheMap5 жыл бұрын
@@cbrocks36 I absolutely agree. This is why I stressed that the me too movement is justified and necessary. Of the women in my life, I think every single one has been a victim of sexual assault. Both my mom and my wife have been raped and/or sexually assaulted. We've had many conversations about this and I can only hope that I possess sufficient compassion, empathy, and understanding. Sometimes two contradictory ideas can both be true, and I believe this is one of those difficult situations. Our society has not yet figured out how to deal with this reality. The me too movement is necessary, but there is also collateral damage along the way, and many-both men and women-have not yet learned how to function in the new reality. This is the essence of my comment. I appreciate the care you took when responding and I think conversations such as we are having now are necessary. Also, understand that there is another jarring statistic. A lot of us men, myself included, have been victims of sexual violence as well. It's a hidden aspect of our society because culturally men don't feel capable or comfortable reporting it. We are all in this seasick ship together.
@cbrocks365 жыл бұрын
Fall off the Map You make a good point. That’s why I appreciate the actors in Hollywood that bravely came forward with their own sexual assault stories. They add validation to the women who came forward. It’s a sad, terrible reality for anyone to live with. Thank you for being understanding and your kind comments.

My theory: It was just so much easier to be intimate with a partner 20 years ago. Nowadays if you approach a girl on the street/cafe they're much more cautious and it's considered really weird and creepy and even if you get her number chances are it's not gonna go anywhere. 20 years ago that's literally how relationships started and it is definitely the best way for many reasons. And relationships 20 years ago meant much more than they do today. Now you got couples getting together and breaking up in the same week like it's nothing

love the hand mirror shot! The way I see it, (as a 25 year old 1 yr after graduation) I think unemployment is a culprit. I had so many more people I was meeting or dating while I was in college with my own place, I was surrounded by young attractive, like minded artists and I was invited to many more social gatherings. I spent ages 17-24 in one state, so essentially when I moved back home with my parents, I lost my social circles, the invitations etc my social life came to a screeching hault. Seriously someone invite me to brunch I'm desperate. It's tough to move out without an industry that's hiring, even with a degree no one will pay me right out of college it's all unpaid internships. I don't have my own place anymore and therefore no safe space to bring people, and without classes I have no idea where to meet people as an adult. I literally have to PAY to go to a social gathering or networking event. Luckily I met someone right before graduating or else I'd be completely alone. Here’s my take. I think a massive amount of us 18-29 year olds are all on tinder, we’re swiping all day, we occasionally match. Maybe we message for a bit, but as you said, the intimacy isn’t tangible and real. I think we’re swiping, but never hanging out with anyone, so its mostly a waste of our time. I do think however, that it is possible on social media. Just not, current social media. People are actually hanging out in VR these days. I think, if we had avatars that actually looked like us, and we were meeting and hanging out with other avatars in VR, (talking, laughing and having fun) i think you could actually build real intimacy. I think you would actually want to hang out with that person irl, because you already essentially do online. And when you decide to take that girl from VR to go bowling or something, i think you would hit it off much easier than hanging out with someone you talk in the DMs with occasionally. Sorry, long winded, but I’ve been thinking about all this stuff a lot this last year. I honestly thought i was unhealthy physically or something because i had no interest in hooking up. I guess its not just me 👍🏻

I think social media has potential for providing the full intimacy you need. But if you don't take initiative to actually meet those people in person, it's just an illusion. It's the watered down version of intimacy.

Dating apps are totally bullshit!! Love is what happens accidentally or eventually! Whereas, people using dating apps are having intension of making love happen to them; i can say that they are tryna love someone forcefully and that not the purity of love, because it's artificial. Meeting a person in real life and feeling a connection, is the real essence. Social media can befool a human brain, where the intimacy isn't very strong.

1. As someone who now relies on dating apps I feel like I actually can't meet someone naturally IRL anymore even though I use to do that. I've realized that the relationships I've had with people I've met through social media often have this large gap... Like we don't actually know each other. We become intimate but there's a big hole where our initial contact and first impressions would have been. 2. I have long distance friends who I keep in touch with via social media and I'm grateful for that because we can keep intimacy alive. But I think it actually has to be there in the first place.

As a 20 something yr old, i can confirm Social Media is the reason that statistic is so high, people are losing the need to go out to communicate and be with people anymore, that statistic will continue to climb when VR is perfected.

A big part for me (while not a 20 something male, but a 27 year old woman in a long term relationship), is the exhaustion and stress from work and lack of money and increasing anxiety. I have to work two jobs. I’m in marketing and in retail. He works one and helps with the cleaning. When I get home after closing (around 10), I eat. I shower. I sleep. I am so overcome with stress of 1. Hating my job and 2. Having to work two jobs to keep up with rent increasing on my when I renewed my lease. I do think social media and access to other things to do at night is a part of it. But I also think the whole “stressed out millennial just trying to get by” storyline is true in many cases, which leads to a celibate life whether you’re in a relationship or not.

Adding my own thoughts to the discussion... I personally believe that the reasoning behind the decrease of sex is in large part the easy access to online pornography. Mostly anyone who has access to your videos online would also have access to online pornography. For a fraction of the effort someone can get a similar endorphin release to that of actual sex (Endorphins are the feel good chemicals in your brain). I do think social media changes how we interact with one another, but I fail to see the connection between social media and sexual intimacy. I find your strongest point to be at 2:31 when it talks about technology being an issue. But in addition to online games and streaming I feel they left out the part about online pornography. 'But porn has been around since VHS that surely can't be the problem.' Video games and watching other people play games (streaming) have also been around for a long time as well. But now all of those things (pornography, video games, social media) can be done at home in your own privacy. You don't need to got to the XXX store anymore or even gamestop, both of those services are now fully online and very simple to access. Free of guilt from having people watching you buy it. This last point may just be my frugalness speaking but here we go. Instead of: downloading a new video games, or paying monthly for Netflix, or even buying booze/drugs to feel good, porn for the most part is free. I'm sure there are a lot of people who still pay for it, but a large majority of it is in fact free. Anyways thanks for coming to my Ted Talk, and please continue the discussion. Sincerely, 20-something-year-old-male

I too was waiting for him to insert porn into the discourse, but was left high and dry. In 2019 high school...? Yeah, a contributing factor may be social media and gaming. But beyond that, online porn has to be the reason for the 10-year drought. Free, on-demand, 100% success rate, and infinite variety. No trip to the local club can compete with those numbers.
