(1) be transparent and honest about the gap, everyone has a situation in their life due to which they have to take a break and employers should be fine with this. If I am an interviewer I would hire you as long as you have skills and right mindset and perform well during interview (2) you can fill in the gap saying you used that time for learning new skills, freelancing or volunteer projects. it is also okay to not mention anything for that time period and during the actual interview honestly answer questions related to gap (usually they won't ask but if they do). IMHO, if you have solid things on your resume (whatever I mentioned in above video) the gap will not have any adverse impact on interview process. Hope that answers your question and I wish you all the best of luck!

As a Mechanical Engineer, make sure you decide in what field you want to make an impact. If IT jobs is the field, just build relevant skills like coding by completing courses, self learning and building a portfolio will be excellent. Good luck!
