Sometimes the problem isn't you, it's the boss. Boss's have biases, and one I had was apparently clueless about how bad his were. The worst ones were he only promoted people that were his approximate age, and he only promoted people that had the stereotypical look people associate with success. Are you tall, full head of hair, and slender? Congrats, you've been given the secret promotion nobody else even knew was available. Ten years older, only 6', and male pattern baldness? Well, gee, even though you are LITERALLY DOING THE WORK OF THREE PEOPLE, there's no reason to give you that bump in pay grade even though they hand them out like candy at the other facilities.

1. A boss who values you will find a way to promote you. If they dont, or cite HR promotion cycles etc., they dont intend to and like dangling the carrot and exploiting you for your skills and competence. 2. Playing petty politics always seems to work. Corporate offices are toxic cesspools. Straightforward, honest employees rarely move up. 3. Similarly, employees who are very intelligent aren't going to move up either, because leadership prefers subservient, sycophantic mediocrity.

I find that my biggest flaw is that my personality doesn't fit what they are looking for. Being an introvert is a major downfall when it comes to promotions. Even though I went back and got a graduate degree I have lost out to other employees that were less educated and credentialed. My reviews go something like 5/5 Engineering skills and maybe a 3/5 communication skills. I'll try taking your advice and try working on my conversation skills and hopefully upper MGMT finds me more relatable.

Learn to fake it. I'm a total introvert and I HATE small talk. But, my peers, bosses, and reports wouldn't believe anyone who said that I was. Typically you know when an extrovert would say something, don't you? In my head, I just say "fuq it", open my mouth, and start talking. Don't worry about being awkward. The way I see it, nobody is going to remember the random thing I said or did in 48 hours anyway. So, even if what you say doesn't come out exactly right, it doesn't matter. Plus, the more you talk, the more you'll figure out the right things to say. If your employer has a mentorship program, jump into it. If you get an opportunity to communicate with higher-ups, take it. You want VISIBLE projects that put you out in front of leadership, even if they're not the most important projects. Your best chance at a promotion is if everybody knows who you are and somebody in management likes you. That's WAY more important than a graduate degree.

The answer to all this is: start a business, because being an employee absolutely sucks, no matter how you view it, unless you get a lucky break or are wired in a way that causes you to look and act like something they like, usually having little to do with merit. BTW, if they can fire you without a successor (and they can), then they can promote you without a successor. If they want to do it, they'll do it. A bad boss sits in their office, ignoring everything like a god who has lost its passion, waiting to see if you're clever enough to do their job for them, and only letting you past the gates if you should shine three times brighter than they do. Given the opportunity, by the way, please get rid of the piece of clay who stood between you and your destiny. Eesh. And don't listen to somebody who tells you to work for an idiot. Sometimes it's better to dodge a bullet than to take the bullet. So when it comes back to you, you'll have the flexibility of saying 'NO.'
@joefunk762 жыл бұрын
Here’s the simple skinny on this: In order to get promoted, you first need to be a “key employee”, meaning highly valued by your superiors enough that they want to ensure not only that you stick around, but are happy to do so with regards to your salary and status within the company. Note that your work quality is only tangentially related to whether you’re a “key employee”; it can range from excellent or mediocre, especially since your work quality isn’t the primary factor that determines whether you’re a “key employee” or not. Roughly, it’s based on how much they like you and how “alpha” they deem you. It’s basically a popularity contest. So then, how do you know whether or not you’re a “key employee”? Very easily, in fact. Here is how: If you don’t know, then you’re not one. Companies make sure to let “key employees” know in no uncertain terms that they are ones both by their words and by their actions. If you are a “key employee” at your company, you already know it, and if you don’t, then I’m sorry to inform you that you’re not one.

This video could have started and ended with #3. If your boss/manager/whatever has not put together a written plan that details all that you must accomplish to be promoted, you have not accomplished those items, and the two of you have not sat down together to jointly prepare the justification that will be presented to HR and senior management - you are not getting promoted. Your promotion is not even in consideration, let alone budgeted if not planned a year in advance.

@@benfanning1 - Yes, I agree, but... You still need that manager to actually drive the process. In my own situation, I had a documented plan and exceeded all deliverables. Not for me or anyone else on the team. Three years later, nobody on the team has been promoted except that new manager. The irreplacable concept and not promoting an employee because he is so good at what he does, eaning its a high capability and high commitment employee. Because that kind of employee is like that because he wants to excel and get promoted, because he want a higher income. So if you keep it down there doing it, eventually he will get frustrated and will quit, so the irreplacable employee concept is dumb and short term vision. In an organization you have 4 kinds of employee. 1.-Low capability, low commitment, those need to be fired righ away. 2.- High capability and low commitment, those guys can be worked out, by challenging them to keep them producing. 3 Low capability and high commitment, this guys can be trained and mentored to optimize their skills and perform better. 4.-High capability and High commitment, these guys need to be leaders, because all the other guys will allways go th this king of guy to ask for questions, mentorship. Normally Guys types 2 & 3 are around 70-80% of the team.

It's extremely dumb. What I have found out over my time working is that the majority of managers/supervisors don't actually know how to pick employees. When they get a good one they just got lucky. Then he hires someone from another branch, and that person is TERRIBLE. And he refuse to properly discipline them. It's truly amazing. All respect loss. At the end of the day, most organizations now thrive on mediocrity. It's completely disgusting.
