This old lpg aluminum welding is rare to see these days. I started out doing this kind of welding way way way back. mostly with brazing oxi acet fusion and even using coat hangers years ago. The last time i welded aluminum was with a spoil gun makes life so much easier. But i didn't work on busted housings like this. I worked with brand new aluminum material. This involves unique technique all its own. I was a welder fitter for thirty years and I'm retired now miss the trade bigtime.

He is gas welding. Look at the first pass around the circumference. He's melting the edge of the cavity, and tapping the weld pool with the end of a steel arc welding rod, to "fatten" up the edges in preparation to add the filler material. He doesn't start adding filler material until about the five minute mark. Anyone who isn't impressed with this vid has never gas welded (or brazed). This dude makes it look easy, which is what the best artists do.

Wow, I'm quite impressed! What does the inside look like? I have a few questions I'd love to see answered; 1) Why Oxy-LP gas instead of Oxy-acetylene? 2) What was that stuff you were using for filler material? 3) What was all that stuff you were doing with the 2016 rod, just cleaning scum off the weld pool? 4) Do you run the flame with low Oxygen to minimize oxidation of the AL as you weld? 5) How much was the video sped up? 6) How about adding some explanation for those of us who want to try that at home? 7) As I said, I'm impressed! I am continually amazed at what some people can do when they don't have the "proper" tools! (Oops! Not a question!)

Oxy Acetylene welding of aluminum has been around for decades, also "carbon arc" welding steel/stainless steel aluminum also, here this guy only had LPG gas so he used that with an alloy filler rod, He is using a commercial aluminum welding rod with flux coating and filling with a plain alloy filler rod.
@vandalsgarage

Nope. The 6013 rod (just the butt end) is being used to manipulate the weld puddle, clear away oxide layer, and tap the material into a thicker layer, in preparation for the filler material, which is made.from aluminum scrap. He switches back and forth between the filler, and the 6013 rod. Obviously, the steel electrode cannot melt at these temps, its literally just a tool. Go watch again, its fascinating, and quite difficult to do. He is highly skilled, this is not low temp zinc brazing.

I have a 1930's aircraft metal smiths apprenticeship workbook, that shows how to weld aluminum with an acetylene torch. Of course it can be done, but MIG and TIG sure is easier. Way back in the 1920's a man that could weld stainless steel, was paid $20 and hour for this rare skill, as it was back then.

Yes you have to feel and strike to start along with maintain the weld/braze flowing otherwise by sight alone you can easily just turn what your repairing into a big lump of molten aluminum on your bench. Been also cheating and using the Aluminum Brazing Rod available here in the US to do similar for years now and its got tensile strength similar to steel making it great for thread repair and to fill in wear prone areas. Done correctly the repair will be stronger and more wear resistant than the original materiel. When brazing you have to refrain from using plain steel wire brushes for preparing your work as they can leave a residue that prevents the rod from flowing plus you need to start brazing immediately after your prep is done before any blush/oxides develop. The striking tools though can be made of steel since the aluminum brazing rod won't stick very well to them. On large parts after removing the seals, bearing, etc pre-heating them over a burner set on low (even a small camp stove) can help speed things up. Best!

being an old do it yourselfer many years ago, i did the same thing, it takes some practice to get the right heat and movement of your brazing rods but once you get it done it is good i had an uncle and brother in law that were mechanics and a son in law that was a body man and all would shake their heads at some of the stuff i did. i was told many times by them i should have been doing this stuff professionally but i enjoyed doing it for myself and not dealing with customers that would not pay what the job was worth or expected miracle for their stupidity.

For the time it took to braze this up you probably could have just cast another one. Or better yet just find another cover that isn’t broke. There’s no reason to repair something like this. Also the heat that was put into the part to do this repair didn’t help. JB weld would have been a better option.

*You notice he is using a REDUCING flame since the special rod is 70% Aluminum and 30% Zinc. Zinc oxide is nasty stuff for your lungs so you need a reducing flame. If you look carefully you can see the white Zinc oxide film all around the repair just before he starts grinding*

Okay I understand that LP gas and oxygen for better thermal control. I noticed you tacked it with a different rod I suspect with a high zinc content for tinning. Then you use your melted down aluminum rod for the structural filler. Then you would make a pass with lower temperature material zinc? That takes care of all the porosity issues. And then you just alternated back and forth and then capped it with the tinning rod. So my question is what is that particular rod you're using for tining and filling in the porosities?
@wawerukamau1260
@wawerukamau1260 Жыл бұрын
That's not zinc. It's an improvised cast aluminum rod. I've seen a previous video how it's made.
@crazywayne7051
@crazywayne7051 Жыл бұрын
@@wawerukamau1260 interesting I'd like to see some information on that. Most of the aluminum brazing rod we get in the USA has about 0 to 50% aluminum 40 to 80% zinc and about 10% tin. Depending on manufacturer and what the rod is used on. By the way I'm aware of that he makes his own ride by melting down cast parts and stringing out the material into rods. It's the manufactured rod he starts off with to get the filler flowing. If you watch you'll see he grabs it every now and then to clean up the porosities. And then again at the end he use that rod worked a little lower temperature to shine it up and get some flow into more porosity.
