Winding back the donor cartridge doesn't work, even if nothing was printed and the donor film looks untouched. I had a cartridge where the last 10 pictures failed to print and I wanted to re-use those and winded back accordingly. The printer did just forward the cartridge to the end again and reported that the cartridge was spent. I wonder how it recognises that the donor was used. I noted a tiny clear rectangular spot on one of the black separator lines. Is this a mark the printer checks? If so, maybe it can be painted over with a black permanent marker.

Interesting... what selphy are you using? Mine was an old cp900.. and it just let me rewind and print bad prints.

@@aleksdude It's also a CP900. Perhaps it's a matter of the firmware version then. Printer manufacturers always try to reduce the possibilities the customers have, forcing them to buy more original consumables. 😠

@@jurgmesser7723 I think you're right. My CP900.. I never ever upgraded the firmware. I think the biggest annoyance for me with this printer is how you end up with so many blank sheets (for you it was picture print failure.. but for me.. I would only print a few prints at a time.. and this would cause it to skip). I wanted to get the newer Selphy CP's as I used to use these for amateur photobooths.... and certain newer ones had a battery.

This gave me hope but unf. after a few turns it got stuck and doesn't nudge very much. as mentioned in other replies, everything that I was able to rewind was unused... I did have a few failed attempts so it all goes to waste. Thank you

They must have updated the cartridge. It's annoying since there are times the cartridge wastes good ink

Note, I did this because my printer was broken and would have required me to repurchase more ink ribbons. Also, what has irked me too is that I have like 36 sheets of unused paper because if you don't print alot of prints at one time, the ribbon can skip and you're left with alot of unused paper.

most of these little sublimation printers have sim card protection for a new ribbon and rewinding doen't work for 'em. i've tried it on kodak easyshare 500 and agfa ones - no luck...

@@lion4952: It's not planned obsolescence. The ink ribbon is physically altered by the dye-sublimation printing process, and reusing a previously-used section of ink ribbon will inevitably result in low-quality prints.

The cartridge said I will get 54 prints on one refill, but after 20 or so prints, I got a message that the cartridge is exhausted. So, I tried it on the CP1300 intuitively, before watching this video and it worked. Good part is that it prints same quality prints after that. But it is a painful process to re-roll the cartridge, and there are some changes on the CP1300 cartridge where you have to hold small locking mechanism for it to be rolled back and my left hand is still shaky. ;)

nice job! Glad you were able to make some prints and use up that paper! That's crazy you only did 20 prints. I've been told on the internet that if you don't print often.. this can be an issue where it readjusts the cartridge. But the fact you only got 20 prints is strange.... Do you leave the printer on all the time?

The printer was not in use for sometime. But, I bought and used a new cartridge when I started printing to review some of the recent photos. And I got 20 something prints on the first one and then 23 prints from the second cartridge. I am not sure what’s wrong but that seriously is some issue. Additionally, I keep on getting two errors frequently, that are incorrect paper size and paper jam. Could be these errors are also contributing to the actual print count.

I managed to make this work for one photo, so i took my time to rewind the entire cartridge, and now it says "empty" again, just as I was ready to print lots of photos. Also, during the rewind, i noticed that about half of the ink was unused, usually you can see the negatives of the photos you printed before, but apparently this dumb printer loves to skip over a lot of ink.

Reading some forum posts... People mentioned that it can skip when you turn off and turn on the printer multiple times. A problem for people who only print a few prints at a time. In your case. It's strange that a bunch of negatives were never produced. Do you have a selphy cp900 or newer model? I never upgraded my firmware so it could be a firmware thing where it's able to tell it's an empty cartridge even if you rewind it

@@aleksdude It's a CP910, I can't remember ever upgrading the firmware, but I am now investigating a physical malfunction (I suspect loose gears because it also struggles with drawing in the paper). The problem is indeed something else, has nothing to do with the cartridge hack. Your trick still works, I managed to print two more photos after my first comment, my printer is just super janky. (And that's the reason why I turned it on and off lots of times in the past, because of jammed paper)

@@MeltEmber On my CP900.. I was getting the following error: "No Paper" or "Cassette Incorrectly Inserted" I think.. this would start with the paper loading somewhat.. but nothing happening. In the end,.. I found out there was an issue with the paper tray. I guess there is a sensor close to their... and if the paper tray is not aligned well.. it can kick the following error: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eXiraGyvismYpKM It's sad that canon never addressed this defect in the cp900... and it worries me that the 910 might be affected too since it seems cp910 is just a wifi updated version for windows 8/10

@@MeltEmber I hope I'm sending you into the right direction. If the printer isn't loading the paper properly and your getting the same message as me... Hopefully adjusting the tray can be a simple fix. Note. When this problem happened. I immediately thought like you. I actually took apart the printer. Thankfully I was able to put it back.

About the newer models and other companies. They have the same internal parts, from the same supplier. The only difference are the ink cartridges and the ,emir interfaces.

i am playing around with a CP-220 , tthe printer printed only some parts of the whole picture , my new ink cartridge came today tried it and now it got stuck in the middle of the print and it says ribbon problem. thx for the tip with winding it back. Fun fact: my older cartridge works better than the new shipped one !

Interesting.. I've never had this error before. It's interesting it would give a ribbon error. I only used this because I have a ton of left over paper. They don't have an option to just buy the ink cartridge. The photo's aren't great with a used ink ribbon but at least I can finish off the unused paper I have around. Glad it helped some people.

I'm not sure if people have the same problem as me. I have a quite alot of extra paper since the ink ribbon gets used up before the paper. Judging by the thumbs down.. this isn't a huge problem for man. For me... I just didn't want to waste the extra paper. Also,.. my printer was broken at one time.. and you can imagine that it's pretty annoying wasting money on test prints. Good luck!

@@miracle_echeta Hello. No worries. I'll see if I can help. The CP900 printer is not officially compatible with windows 10. In fact, there are issues if you can get it working. But it is possible to install the printer onto windows 10 I think. I think he's using what is called a 'spudger'. It is used for opening plastic cases without damaging them. They are commonly used for opening mobile phones. You can buy them as kits on ebay/amazon. Hope this helps!
