Overtraining isn't something that just elite athletes experience. Maybe your performance is decreasing and you don't know why. Maybe you dread your workouts or feel tired and exhausted all of the time, or you're not finding joy in training anymore.
Overtraining simply means that your body can't recover from the training you've done, even if you haven't changed your workout load. The problem with once we get into that overtrained state, it's going to take an exponential amount of rest and recovery before we can come back up to anywhere near the fitness level we had before.
So, how do we identify when we're getting close to overtraining? If you're not using heart rate-based training, you might notice:
- decreased performance,
- agitation or moodiness,
- extreme fatigue (even your recovery workouts)
- chronic or nagging injuries
- insomnia
You can use your heart rate to determine if you're overtraining even before these symptoms start to appear (which is super cool!)
