What if you have an object with a nonuniform density and you want to determine it's density as a function of position? Would you just submerge the object in water bit by bit at different angles or is there a better way that doesn't destroy the object? Also if dipping an object in water would cause water damage could you wrap it in plastic and correct for the buoyancy force from the plastic?

This method will just tell about average density. Check my density video there are discussions on the same issue of covering it with wax very thin layer to save it from water. This method is not good for getting density profile. May be some ultrasonic wave propagation method tell about local densities.
