That was wonderful. Gores always seemed a bit like a mysterious triangle that suddenly found itself beautifully inset into a garment. This explains them so perfectly. Thanks for the tutorial. Can't wait to try them in something now. Take care.

And I'm back to watch again as I have a dress that I need to inset gores into the side seams of as it's just a bit too tight around the hips and nowhere near flowy enough.

Thank you so so much for this video. I'm in the middle of making a 16th/17th C ladies jacket (same pattern as your pink one) and I've got to the gores in the mock up. I remembered that I had seen your video on gores so came back for a refresher. So glad I did. Nearly made a right pig ear of it. This project is being a nightmare. Might go back and make a Kaftan/viking coat instead. At least that doesn't have seams in weird places.

@nanettebromley88433 жыл бұрын
@@OpusElenae You are right a breather is good. My breather consists of " a historical nod" 4 gore skirt, partlet and kaftan with hopefully (if enough fabric) extra swoosh in the knee length skirt portion. Hopefully the mock ups in calico will also be usable as summer versions.

When you are finishing / felling the seams on the gores - do you turn the seams INTO the gore or out if it?
@OpusElenae3 жыл бұрын
I fold the seam allowances away from the gore, onto the main fabric (in this example, it would be the white linen). Does that make sense?
@Holly_is_trying Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for this, really clear and helpful tutorial! I do have a question though - is the process any different when it comes to insetting a gore into an existing seam? Thank you!
@OpusElenae Жыл бұрын
It is! You don’t have to be as careful with the seam allowances or reinforcement, because you’re introducing a weak point (the slit) into the middle of a piece of fabric. I mark the seam allowances on the gore, sew one side of the gore to the seam starting at the seam allowance at the point, and then sew the seam from top to bottom. I can make a short of it if it’d be helpful
@Holly_is_trying Жыл бұрын
@@OpusElenae Thank you so much for coming back to me! I think I get it, will give it a go and report back. Thank you!
@hdubbs9174 Жыл бұрын
Well, this tutorial is just amazing! I do have a question, perhaps someone else could answer: you said that this tutorial was specifically for setting a gore in cut fabric, how would it differ when setting a gore in a seam?
@OpusElenae Жыл бұрын
So a gore set in a seam can be added as you sew that seam. Basically you’d sew one side of the gore to the fabric, then you’d sew the seam like normal, treating the remaining side of the gore as an extension of the fabric. Does that make sense? If not I can make a short video on the differences.
@hdubbs9174 Жыл бұрын
@@OpusElenae That does, but I'm wondering a bit about the orientation of the gore: basically is the gore sewn in "flipped" about the vertical axis? Such that the left side of the gore is affixed to the right side of the body piece? To me this would make the gore want to "hide" in the seam. I hope this makes sense--sorry if this is a confusing question. I'm sure there are multiple ways to put an insert in the fabric depending on what the gore should look like in the end and how the fabric should behave. Thank you very much for your answer! Your videos are always very inspiring and informative!

I want to use this method to enlarge a blouse. How do I know how wide to make the gore?
@OpusElenae2 жыл бұрын
Measure the bottom of the blouse, then measure your body where that part of the blouse should sit (be sure to add ease). The difference between those two measurements is how big the bottom edge of the gores should be (i recommend using at least two gores for symmetry). Make sure to add seam allowance to your core and also take into account the seam allowance you’re losing from the shirt (half inch seam allowances will mean you need to add an inch to each gore to compensate for the loss in the shirt).
