PhilfreezeCH Jon is quite entitled to his views like anyone else - What we don't like is having our beliefs compared to a dystopia. Nothing wrong with civil discourse, as you say, but the way many people from the remain camp label us and tell us how bad this'll all be... It's demeaning, frankly. I do hope things stay civil in the comments section though, certainly.

Kmg24 someone could just as easily make a pro brexit game though. Neither one will be an accurate representation of reality when a game is made with biased intentions.

David Lara, if a Pro Brexit game is made that openly patronises those with Eurocentric beliefs, they have just as much right to criticise as I do here. A game or otherwise, if it offends you, you have the right to criticise. As long as free speech exists, there will and must be criticism to challenge it.
@kmg24806 жыл бұрын
TheKarlOshaughnessy, I'd rather not - If I did make one, it wouldn't be particularly good or exciting, I can assure you. I will say, however, that such a game wouldn't be of a vindictive nature. Yeah, if they were born in the first week of January 2000, the likelihood of that is very low
@darklorddylan13166 жыл бұрын
If you think about it, it's actually more likely than you may think. Because all the new 18 year olds would flock to the bars. It's even more likely because it would be New Year's Day and all the people that were old enough beforehand likely would have partied New Year's Eve and would be recovering from that.
@gadrill42856 жыл бұрын
My point is... The only way to have been born in the year 2000 and be 18 on the 1st of January 2018 is to have been born on the 1st of January 2000. If you're born the day after, on the second of January, you're too young. If you're born the day before, on the thirty-first of December, you're born in 1999 and since almost no one is born on the first of January, it's safe to assume everyone born in the year 2000 is too young.

PhilfreezeCH Sines314 Pretty sure the warning was to save people unnecessary frustration/aggravation/depression. There’s no merit in going down into KZbin comments to watch a lot of trolls and conservatives go off; that’s pure, meaningless masochism. Plus it’s KZbin, for crying out loud-not really the place to try and have civil discourse. The comment section is a trash heap over the most innocuous and pointless of topics anyway, much less anything that’s actually meaningful. Why put yourself through that shit unnecessarily? Why waste your time and raise your blood pressure for no reason other than purposefully upsetting yourself? And over what? With whom? It’s just not worth it here. I mean I guess some people are always gunning for a debate, whenever and wherever, but KZbin comments are not really the place for that-unless all you want is name-calling and petty arguments that typically just lead to hating humanity that much more.

A morbid curiosity has me watching a realisation of my darkest nightmares for our country. I know I will leave grieving, but I will stay for the inevitable Jon cock-up. After the 25 minute mark I could not keep watching, but I gave you a thumbs up for this to make up for the loss of view time. I moved to the islands to escape my ever more nationalist home in the borders and I found it was the highlight of my week when the tour boats came in as I finally saw the diversity and attitudes I had grown up with and can no longer see in every day life. Keep playing games Jon because every day I see another part of the UK I knew as a child, the Britain that killed slavery, that put people before monarchs and demigoges, that made it's people sovereign, die and need something like your vids to keep such memories alive.

Hrm. I like this game, but not as much as Papers, Please. I'm 20 minutes in, and I've figured out what bothers me about it. Basically, in Papers, Please, the arbitrary nature of the entry tickets and passports and work permits were all directly tied to how Arstotska was becoming an increasingly hostile totalitarian state. You see first-hand how your nation was changing from how much more difficult it gets to feed your family, and second-hand see how it makes life a living hell for immigrants who've done nothing wrong. But in this game, because you're working for a private bar, your job and the government's actions are completely separate. The rules on who you let enter the bar become increasingly arbitrary, sure, but that's not reflecting the government becoming more and more of an authoritarian state, it's just showing that the guy running a bar is an asshole. The xenophobia that your character experiences is well integrated into the story, just not the main gameplay mechanic of checking peoples' I.D.s. Anyways, I'm going to watch till the end! This game is interesting for covering a topic that most games tend to shy away from.
@salasy6 жыл бұрын
I think also this game compared to papers, please, lacks a bit on the emotional department. In P,P almost every characters had some kind of story and there where some times when you had to choose between letting people in, even if they didn't have the right stuff, or kicking them away and maybe condamn them to a worst fate In this one the people that come to you at worst they don't get in and they have to go and find another place to pass the night
@araxiel20516 жыл бұрын
Well, this is just the start of the game. Maybe later down the lines, any non-English must have a "valid venue permit" or "No Dutch" because of an international incident, or maybe there's a curfew for "Euros" after 22 o'clock and if you spot any non-English you can click on the little walkie-talkie and report them or something. Hell, the tutorial level that is happening in a couple of months in-game (after the tutorial it says "months earlier") is a government gala, maybe later down the line there are jobs in which you're a bouncer at government or party-affiliated buildings. Or, what if there's increased "Home Guard" presence, and soldiers and party officials will be part of the que and think the pub's rules don't apply to them, and that might bring potential conflicts. There's plenty of potential mechanics and situations that involve more than simply "checking the birthday outside of the pub". Remember; what we've seen is only the first in-game week of the beta.
@Healermain156 жыл бұрын
Granted, but many games have shown that just because your beta can get better, doesn't mean that it will. I'm hoping it improves later on, but keeping my expectations low.

Names not matching nationalities is one thing, but the lack of correspondence and consistency between gender, name, and name order is driving me up the wall. A woman named 'Imre Nagy', a Hungarian male name? Word order should be surname-first name regardless. Another woman named 'Popescu Mihai', a Romanian male name, and while they're generally first-surname, it's surname-first name on official forms, so at least the game got that right. There might be more heck-ups, but these two are the "Euro" languages I speak lol. While I realise players will need to look out for errors in the party-goers' names, they simply can't know what names are given to which gender in all these nationalities the game is trying to show. I really hope the devs make an effort on this front. They can just make all of them first name-last name, inconsistencies solved.

Nomulus name a decision that was made by an individual. If I didn’t vote Brexit, would Brexit still have won? Yes. Did my yes vote for Scottish independence have any impact? No. Thus my individual beliefs and vote didn’t have any impact and as such there no responsibility in the individual that expressed their beliefs, it just so happened that more people voted one way than the other.
@deamongimli6 жыл бұрын
That is the function of democracy. Besides certainly in elections the vote of the individual can mean the difference between one candidate and another, and on a wider level this can of course mean that one party gains dominance over another, thus the choice of the individual matters. Among the main flaws of democracy is the fact that when everyone's views are heard, and everyone's opinion is equal (or should be) all that is left is a raving cacophony of the screams of petulant children wanting their way with many feeling unheard. This results in many abandoning the process entirely thus making the situation worse.

I'm fine with the game itself but the fact that it and everyone else tries to paint it as anywhere near to reality just generates fearmongering. Similarly I'm all for creative expression but it equally means people can oppose anything you make, hence this comment section and people who despise this game. And you can't say Jon didn't expect this literally calling the video "Brexit: The Video Game".
@Sines3146 жыл бұрын
Yah, if I were Jon I would have skipped the game, or else gone with some humorous dismissal of the whole political element. An ideal third option would have been to express his opinion, but also express respect for the other side of the argument. We need more unity amongst political opponents these days. But this doesn't really seem like a game that is terribly interested in finding common ground with it's political opponents.
@amcghie76 жыл бұрын
(leaving fiery political opinions aside) Brexit kind of is different to normal political opinions though, the referendum either meant that we were staying in the EU or leaving it - there is no middle ground and in theory there is no going back. If in a normal election the political party that you were supporting lost, you just wait at max 5 years and try again. As we are going for Brexit, it will and should draw criticism to make sure it is managed correctly - sort of what the opposition is meant to do, but in the UK right now it is doing a shit job of. I would argue the same if the result was the opposite. Look at it from Jon's point of view, Claire is an immigrant, and with all the "hostile environment" crap that the government has been pushing, I can see why Jon might perhaps be a little wary of Brexit and its potential implications.
@futuramic52456 жыл бұрын
I understand being wary but surely no one believes Britain will turn into some kind of dystopia because we left the European Union? I feel acting as if dystopic depictions of post-Brexit Britain are "a story that's just a little bit too close to reality" is tantamount to fear-mongering people who may not really understand what's going on. These people may start to see Brexit as a stay, good, leave, literal Nazi government, which a childish worldview to enforce. I know immigrants who come a little further than France and none of them are concerned in the slightest, I know because they voted leave.
@amcghie76 жыл бұрын
A) this game is a play on Brexit, sure, but no its more a commentary of peoples anxieties, not a visage of the future, especially considering its set in the near past. I'm 100% positive that Jon knows that - and to be fair, a game that features government sanctioned hostility towards migrants is sadly a little to close to reality of the UK right now - that's what Jon was getting at - not that Brexit necessarily meant or caused that. B) In no way do I think that leave means a nazi government, far from it, in fact there are plenty of extreme right wing governments inside the EU (looking at you Austria) - the leave vote should in no way change our government type. - however there is a little caveat to that. May's government is pretty weak and flimsy, so they have been pandering a lot more to the extreme conservatives in the country and May has been quite clear that she thinks that the leave vote is the mandate to do that, and sadly the tabloids seem to agree (calling judges and lords that disagree traitors to the country etc) - even though the actual Brexit vote wasn't that clearly split down party lines. C) If they were immigrants then how did they vote? EU nationals don't get the vote for referendums or general elections? I know that for a fact because my gran is Danish and she lived in the UK for 50 years without getting the vote. If they were migrants who were granted citizenship (good luck to them on that) then of course they are not worried because they are in the eyes of the UK government now British?

But Jon literally says "with a story that's just a little bit too close to reality" which is my point, because it isn't anywhere near to reality. Nor did I say you think its a Nazi government, I just think acting as if dystopic depictions of the UK are accurate and acting as if Brexit is the worst thing ever is a dangerous precedent. This happens every time someone/something people see as dangerous becomes popular, same thing happened with America, are either of our countries suffering greatly? Immigrants by definition are foreigners living in a country permanently, so they are immigrants, also I said further than France, they aren't EU nationals. That status arguably makes them less safe than Jon's significant other. And good luck to them on what? They're doing great. Nor are they suffering 'sanctioned hostility'.

You can't censor free speech, even if you don't agree with it. With all due respect to Jon, if he publishes a video with political connotations, he must expect political discourse in his comments section.
@scragar6 жыл бұрын
Kieran Geary Problem is it's not political discourse, it's people flinging poop and making horribly racist/xenophobic comments. If it was a rational and polite discussion no one would expect it to get closed off, but Jon shouldn't have to deal with what is currently being posted.

mattbenz99 Reviews Yes, an embarrassing number of labour voters voted against their interest because they didn't understand or were just plain racist. I've head loud of them say that they didn't want to agree with Cameron. That's the thought that went into this referendum. That doesn't stop UKIP being the slightly drunk, affable face of the far right. It takes a mild nudge to get the 'burn the Jews, muslims and socialists' rhetoric out of them. Usually buying them a drink will do it. Better be white and over forty, though.
@BigHenFor6 жыл бұрын
It's surprising that you say that as several of their candidates had to be deselected because of their predeliction to spouting racist comments over the years. Perhaps it's the moth to a flame syndrome?
@quimble21776 жыл бұрын
BigHenFor ok. But doesn’t mean that the party as a whole is racist. I mean, to me they’re less electable because Farage isn’t leading them but still. Calling them all racist just because a few are is retarded. If that’s the case I can say all feminists are man hating sexists and female supremacists all because some are. Hell I also said in one of my previous comments that yes, some of the members most likely are. But I can be certain that parties like labour or the conservatives have racists in their parties as well, hell labour has someone with less than primary school education, Diane Abbot. They’ve also got self professed Marxists ( which, going by body count of all ideologies that use Marxism as a base makes them worse than Hitler and the Nazi Party) and Corbyn wants Socialism. How about we ask Venezuela how that worked out eh? And before you may go “no he doesn’t” I’ve seen a video of him from a while back saying something along the lines of “it’s called socialism and it’s here to stay” or something like that. Talk about a fucking spacker (I’m an autist I can use that word as I am one)

Being an uniformed American, can someone please explain why the comments section is what it is for this video?
@darkestknight90386 жыл бұрын
SongYun Tu Being a semi informed American I'll give it a shot. Please correct if I'm wrong. The UK had a vote on whether to leave or stay in the European Union, and they voted to leave, causing a Brexit or British Exit. The proponents for leaving ran a campaign of Britain gaining more control on borders and immigration and regulations. The ones who wanted to stay in the EU said Britain was stronger in the EU. So the comments are people debating over the merits of leaving or staying. Hope it helped a little.

I'm really not a fan of how little control you seem to have here over whether you succeed or fail. In Papers, Please, your salary was actually based on accuracy rather than just sort of an arbitrary (I'm assuming?) number of people who you'll be allowed to let in. It maybe seems to go with what appears to be the game's theme that sometimes the world is shit and you're stuck in it without a hell of a lot of recourse, but for actual mechanics it just seems utterly frustrating.
