You should make the shield, it will allow you to tank 1 major hit or a few minor ones with out losing health. Few other tips is to look for columns of smoke. You will ether find enemy bases that will have a random pal in a cage that you get after freeing them or you can find a village. Villages have merchants witch you can but items and blue prints. I am currently sporting out a Gumoss hat. Adds a little to defense but manly the looks alone was worth the 500 gold.
