He makes up for it by scripting in unscripted moments- reference 6:40. In the south, we refer to waist time as dinner (dropping 'time' because it's understood), unless it's at night, then it's suppertime (one word including 'time' because it's traditional). There is no direct translation for waist minutes, though it might be deduced as how long dinner or suppertime lasts; there's no official time, but it is inversely proportional to how long it took momma to cook. (Incidentally, one might infer 'waste' minutes, the author's intent, to be elapsed time from end of meal to beginning of... you know, or how long it takes to complete... you know, which is directly proportional to how long it took momma to cook.

We have found it necessary to use CTCSS tones when out with my Jeep group. You have people using different radios from different manufacturers, of course, with differing build quality. It’s been found with the newer JL and JTs, and all their fancy electronics, that the Jeeps themselves seem to be emitting something that’s causing some radios to break the squelch, and the user is listening to static all of the time. Noticed especially with the Retevis radios. Once a CTCSS tone is added, this stops. The radio sits quietly, until someone actually keys-up and talks.

This sounds plausible, and you sound sincere so I'll go with it being true. As I have an older Jeep and haven't experienced this and it's now been 11mos since posting, have you been able to isolate what the cause is? TY for any info you can share.

I've witnessed the reverse effect even though no one asked. When I transmit my TD-H8 I can hear a high pitched but quiet whine come from my car's radio while it is in AUX mode and the AUX cable is not connected to my phone. I guess the RF electricities are getting into the AUX cable.

Pretty simple. Any radio with CTCSS disabled can hear all transmissions regardless of the CTCSS tones used by other radios on the channel. The radio only filters tones other than the one it's set to receive. When CTCSS is off the radio isn't listening for a tone and therefore de-squelches any transmission, tone or no tone. A lot of FRS operators don't even bother with CTCSS settings, so they can hear pretty much everything within range. The rub with CTCSS, mainly in relation to FRS, is that it can create a traffic jam of interference. Operators using different tones can key up over each other not realizing someone else is keying up at the same time using a different tone (or no tone) because they're on the same channel even though they may not hear each other. A "privacy code" is not a unique channel as it is sometimes marketed. Just because you can squelch other operators doesn't mean they aren't there and you can't interfere with each other's traffic.

Where I live in Nova Scotia, Canada tones are used for commerical radio licenses to have many companies with the same frequency for simplex operation. In my city at least 6 different companies have licenses for the same frequency, they all have different tones on them. By design they are just out of range of each other and are not mobile so it works.

There is a common misunderstanding of tone usage. Two GMRS transmissions on the same frequency with different tones can easily interfere with each other to those listening within the common reception area. Once your squelch is opened by receipt of the proper tone, your receiver will hear everyone in your reception area transmitting on that frequency in your reception zone, no matter what tone they are transmitting with. (In Chicago, where I grew up, we often ended sentences with a preposition!) So in our area when someone is using the Mt. Wilson 600 repeater and another is simutaneously transmitting on the Mt. Disappointment 600 repeater with its different tone, simultaneous transmissions will be received by those listening to 600. Of course, being FM: power, distance and the "Capture effect" comes into play in this situation, too! You and Chris should test this out with your HTs on 700 while your repeater is actively in use, at the same time! :) I will bet dollars to donuts that your repeater overwhelms Chris' transmission (being so close) even he is transmitting on a different tone and you are receiving on that tone, while your repeater is in use. I have heard that this will also be the case with the newly announced Baofeng UP-69!

Some HTs do have sub-tones for both transmission and reception, but what was said is still true: it's not so much for privacy, but rather a feature to avoid unintentional interference from others who might happen to be on the same frequency you and your peers are, as well as to avoid interfering into their conversation. It's useful when all parties are civil and just want to avoid nuisance. But the subtones, DCS/CTSS, are standardized codes. If malicious third-parties wanted to listen to or interfere with your comm, it would be trivial to do so.

a "sub channel" is just a CTCSS or DCS tone/code added to a channel. So in addition to the TX code on the repeater, add an RX code and put that same RX code on all your radios - you will then only hear other people that are using that same TX code.

I'm no expert nor am I a Sad Ham and I have a question about "tones." I understand that there is no "security" with tones and anyone on a channel can HEAR the communication between two people using tones, but aren't those just a squelch de-activator? So, if one of them is transmitting and someone else keys his radio at the same time, won't that interfere with his transmission, or is that filtered out somehow? Wouldn't they be ahead to switch to another channel?

@TheNotaRubicon
@TheNotaRubicon Жыл бұрын
DPL205 (same as DCS205) is the tone they are using so that they only hear other radios transmitting that same tone. If you set DPL205 on your radio and then cant hear them anymore, that means they arent using 205, they are using some other tone and Radio Reference is wrong. With no tone set on your radio you will hear everything they transmit - this is why tones/codes are not "secure" If you want them to hear you when you transmit, you will have to figure out what tone they are actually using - Look up "UV-5R tone scanning" to learn how to figure out what tone they are actually using.

Outside of GMRS. PL tones are used for filtering out intermodulation products ("intermod") in big cities that would otherwise get in to the input of public safety, business, and amateur repeaters and base stations. That's really its best-case use. I strongly discourage PL/DPL/etc. use on trail rides in the middle of nowhere simply because maybe another group on the same channel has an emergency in progress. The Baofang YP-69 encryption for channels 23-30 will fix all this. Or will it?

So if its a busy channel and you add a privacy code and people can still hear you, couldn’t you be interrupting others on that busy channel? Just asking because I’m brand new to this and still learning.

Can you have 2 different conversations going on , on the same frequency with two different parties if they are using different "privacy tones" ? Thanks
@TheNotaRubicon
@TheNotaRubicon 3 жыл бұрын
it depends on how close you are, the power of the radios, etc, but everything being equal, two radios transmitting at the same time using different tones will still step on each other/interfere with each other.

could you do a video on "digital" radio and what the police use? i have heard that they use "encrypted" communications that no one can listen on. How can I use that for myself with my friends?

Super-easy... you and your friends just have to all become police, fire, or EMS personnel for a jurisdiction that has implemented encrypted radio ops.

I completely agree, the subject needed to be clarified for some. On the other hand, very surprised by the comments left. They should move on instead of wasting more time writing these kinds of comments if for them you are a waste of time 😂😂😂

Love your videos! Question. I’m new to the radio world. I’m trying to connect to two local repeaters on my Midland MXT115. The tones listed for the repeaters are DPL numbers. I don’t see anything about these numbers in the manual. Is this radio not compatible with DPL codes? Thanks!

All this WAS true until just now. My brand new BAOFENG UP-69 is purpose built for the NEWLY FCC Allocated GMRS channels 23-30 which support radio Encryption at AES-128 and (for a fee to the FCC) AES-256 encryption for privacy... finally without violating laws or common sense. That AES-256-bit fee btw is $35 payable in $70 installments.

I would only use them in repeator inputs. It stops static from triggering the repeator or others using a repeator on the same ch far away from triggering your repeator.

I use the tones when we’re traveling so as to minimize receiving other people’s transmissions. I’ve only had my radios for about a year, and I’ve yet to encounter any areas with much chatter at all. I’d guess most folks are just using their cell phones.
@TomRolfson
@TomRolfson Жыл бұрын
You'll find that's the case almost everywhere outside of major cities or off-road events. But the instant the phones go down, your radios will explode. In the event you have a local group who need to coordinate with each other, by having a tone to tune-out the others. In the event you DO have that a situation like that arise, a good idea would be to have at least one person monitoring the channel for those without the tone who might be also in turn calling out for help. That person either an experienced operator or potentially having a second radio (and listener) as the person(s) calling for help may be inexperienced operators and not even know how to ask for help. I'm sure most here "get it" in the why and how, but many have not thought or lived through earthquakes, hurricanes or other disasters that take-out phones and internet for extended periods of time.

Can't wait for Chirp to support my Baofeng UP-69 so I can more easily program encrypted Repeaters on 23-30!. Baofeng software supporting this IP67 beauty is still in beta and only runs on Windows 95/98, WTH? That forces me to type in my lady's AES code: "7625e224dc0f0ec91ad28c1ee67b1eb96d1a5459533c5c950f44aae1e32f2da3" from the keypad. Timeout is 9 seconds,... what an absolute BEAR, ugh! Digging the new dihydroxy monoxide liquid refillable battery, though, but the o-ring on the fill port look cheap and probably needs a spare.

Can someone explain why my new UV-69 only works when I hold it upside down? I knew antennas come with different gender connectors, but from my perspective this must be a female radio.
@nithia
@nithia 2 жыл бұрын
I would say the only "good" reason to use a tone would be if you are in an environment that has many people using radios and some how none of the channels are clear and you need to have a moment of uninterrupted back and forth for safety reasons. Such as spotting for someone. And I dont mean just for off road as you could be helping some one with a digger that cant see around the scoop or something and need someone to call out but not just yell. Though it would have to be a very active area to not find a single channel you could use for the couple of minutes you might need.

So basically there can be a situation in which there are several groups of my friends and we are using the same frequency but with subtones we can divide this one frequency and not interrupt each group's talk, do I understand it correctly?
@TheNotaRubicon
@TheNotaRubicon 2 жыл бұрын
You would not _hear_ each other.. But if you're all close to each other you would still interrupt/cause interference because you'd all still be using the same frequency and only one person can talk at at a time... If you're going to take all the time to setup sub-tones, you might as well just change to a different frequency instead, then have 0 interference from each other.
