In 1972, a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for using a HAM radio for GMRS purposes. These men promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today, still wanted by the government they survive as soldiers of fortune. concerning the squelch - from the factory they are literally a random setting. But, if you’ll get chirp, you can set them inside the software to graduate 1-10 in a sensible manner so that increasing the squelch number actually increases the squelch. Hope that helps. The only good use I've found for that alarm is for what I use it for. I live fairly rural and a couple neighbors are elderly so I got them these radios so if something happens they can get ahold of me like one of the meth heads in the area snooping around or a health issue. They can call 911 first but that's likely to be a 20 wait for them to arrive often longer out here so while they wait they hit that alarm button and I hear it and go assist them. I know on the first responders radios if they hit it cops will show up to where they are so it's location tracked somehow. But those radios are expensive and not really available to us mere peasants.

Love the videos Randy, keep 'em coming! As a complete rookie novice who bought a pair of UV-5Rs on Amazon thinking I was getting some cool walkie talkies for backpacking, I'm trying to decide to send them back or keep them. After lots of research (20-30 minutes give or take), I've discovered I'm in over my head. I'd like to be able to use these radios while out on the trail to communicate with my wife and hiking buddy point-to-point. But also like the idea of being able to blast away on this thing if I'm in a jam and need help (almost bit by rattlesnake on my last hike). I would like to use a few of the FRS channels for those point-to-point comms with my wife, but do not want to exceed the 2W power limits set by the FCC. I've got CHIRP all set up and I am teaching myself how to use it but can't figure out how to limit my transmit power to just 2W. Got any tips you can share?

I’ve been a ham for 21 years and have never liked the know-it-alls. Hobbies are supposed to be fun. We’re not saving the world. Also, just because a radio can transmit on a frequency doesn’t mean the owner goes around transmitting there all day. And a 5 watt radio with no antenna is no match for the high powered radios in aircraft. Come on, man!

Hey regarding squelch, when the uv5r is connected to a computer, there is an advanced settings section where u can change the value of each squelch setting. U can adjust each one consecutively (starting at the “0” setting) in ascending order to the “9” setting for a smoother adjustment of the squelch.

Alright, I’m 1 month into radios now. Finally understand how to program them using Bluetooth. Wrote my first program day before yesterday with repeaters and it worked. First thing I did was go on my local amateur radio clubs repeater and asked for radio checks till I got someone. Super cool guy who invited me to their meetings and gave me a ton of info. That was sitting in my living room and the repeater was 3.4 miles away. Not bad. Immediately went on Amazon and purchased 3 of the 2 packs of the UV-5Rs and just flashed them all and put them back in the boxes. I’m giving them as Christmas gifts. I personally have 6 of my own now. Now on to the next video…..

Awesome video, I wish all of my instructors over the years were this honest and smart. It's hilarious how the "experts" and "licensed operators" claim to know so much and police everyone. I have met alot (I believe its a word) of "experts" in my life, and I thank them for keeping me in my place. The manual made a good bit of kindling for my woodstove (another word I love). what an ingeniously designed and programmed radio.

Thanks for the video. Seriously funny. I'm still amazed how you can do these videos with a straight face. Those who take their hobby to seriously should be aware that this video may indeed make them sad, especially if they think hearing a roger beep will cause a brain injury. In the spirit of full disclosure, I am a HAM. One of the things other HAM's continue to emphasis is how this hobby is supposed to be fun and enjoyable. Life is to short to be sad, so let us all lighten up and live in the spirit of having good fun and lifting up others rather than being the HAM police.

Love your style. One question... if you if you leave dual watch on and have your friends transmit on the top channel and you transmit in the lower channel and they set their radio up to do the opposite of you, wouldn't that still work? It could give a layer of secrecy if you don't want others involved in the entire conversation. They would have to figure out your frequencies for the whole conversation.

For purposes of COMSEC this is the reason NC Scout recommends exactly what you've described in his book The Guerilla's Guide To The Baofeng Radio. But for everyday non-tactical purposes it's not necessarily needed.
