Interesting. There are different standards in the UK (routinely ignored by plumbers from what I've seen). On a simply span, notches can only be one-eighth of the depth, must be within 25% of an end of the beam and only on the top, never on the bottom. As as as holes are concerned, then they must be drilled on the centre line and only between 0.25 & 0.4 of the total span length as measured from either end (so it's the middle 20% that has to be free of holes). There are also limits as to the spacing between adjacent holes and notches. As mentioned, lift the average bathroom floor and you are likely to find the rules have been somewhat bent.

Very good but just one thing. You can place cable through a hole that is at least 5/8 from the edge if its at the back of the stud, not front. This is to prevent people drilling into a cable

How many 1.5 inch holes can be drilled into a 2x8 joist safely (and how far apart must they be?) thank you.

04:28 Ledger board minimum 2 inch by 2 inch. The 2 inch part of a 2 x 4 is frequently only 1-7/16 inches in width so is the the 2 inch really 2 inch meaning it has to be at least 2.000 inches eliminating any use of a normal 2 x 4?

Send it to my plumber too. He's a complete hacker when it comes to drilling studs. drills wherever he likes and phuks up my nice joists.

There's a good video, but it has few problematic issues. Important things are given quickly and without emphasis (for example I would like to see how exactly you measure distances from edge to bored holes and I can see smiley face of a beautiful lady). Show me the defect, explain it slowly, don't disturb me when showing the essence of the whole video. Summarizing, I though I would learn something by watching it. I needed to pause, come back, rewind it and finally I gave up. Good tricks for saleman but I wanted to actually understand it. You sold it like a product. Good product. Nice product. What's this product for, does not matter...

Holes= stress concentration... area of discontinuity. It raises the stress the beam experiences.
@TheEulerID
@TheEulerID 5 жыл бұрын
@@villaclaratrading-vaco.7556 In the UK holes up to one-quarter of the depth of a beam are allowed but only between between in the "safe zone" 0.25 & 0.4 of the span from each end (so a total of 30% of the length). They have to be drilled on the centre line. The reason it's in that part of the beam is that with compression in the top and tension at the bottom, there's a region where the stresses and tensions in the beam are roughly neutral. As this is an (approximately) neutral area in that respect, that part of the beam doesn't provide much of the strength. Also, round holes in a beam in the neutral zone don't concentrate the stresses as there are no corners (and wood is fibrous, so it doesn't transfer forces quite the way metal does). It can be seen with engineered joists which put most of the material on the top and bottom with some sort of zig-zag webbing, sometimes wood, sometimes steel. There are huge gaping holes for services.

Steve Jones alright so i am not arguing if it is safe or not. Sure its safe i get it. But having a hole in a beam creates stress concentration. Do not bring up material properties or fibers etc. stress is independent of material. Find the average max stress in a beam and then find the average max stress with a hole in the beam. A hole is an area of discontinuity which raises the stress of the beam. It doesn’t matter where it is, the stress will raise even if its by a stress concentration factor as low as 1.1. Its a basic engineering principle. Run a Finite Element Analysis on a beam with a hole and compare with no hole. The maximum bending stress that the beam experiences will increase due to the discontinuity in the member, thats all i am stating
