this is very interesting to me because in my limited hobbyist miniature etc painting i would very much have worked in the opposite order, painting "back to front" in layers so to speak, wood first, then gold, then working on trying to weather it with the patina. but clearly that's a lot of wasted effort and covered up paint, if you have the foresight to understand what the actual end result will be. and you retained a lot of the contrast from the black undercoat doing it your way. i get the impression you probably went to art school but either way its very helpful and instructive to see how you work, thanks for posting all these videos
@ZanVonZed3 жыл бұрын
I went to 'design' school 🤷🏻♀️ but did learn to paint with oils, acrylics, gouache and watercolours from art books and stuff (and have been painting for over 20 years now). There are so many varying techniques in the art world, there's no real right and wrong as long as you reach your intended vision :) (although the purists may think otherwise)

Hi I love your videos, thanks for posting. Can you please explain why you always have a dark under coat? Your painting is brilliant and other sites use a light under coat but they never look as good as yours. I love it! The hammered iron texture is perfect. Here’s a tip for the verdigris... paint the metallic gold (or bronze or copper) on first... then do a watered down verdigris wash over it, letting it run into crevices like it would naturally form. I think you’ll be happy with the results!

Hello I’ve just come across your channel. Love your work. I’m thinking of making a few covers for my art journals. I’m just wondering what it was that you were using as a base to put your work on. And did you bake the clay on it too. If not how did you remove the clay from that surface please. Sorry true novice and very curious because these products and tools are not cheap and I really don’t want to make and then waste. If you don’t mind helping me out I would truly appreciate it. Thank you cherieK🦋🌈

Zan Von Zed I’m so sorry to bother you again. What type of glass is it. It looks like it’s out of a picture frame. Sorry it just really looks fantastic and the fact when you’re working on the clay once you’re ready straight into the oven. I know if I’m going to move my work to put on a service to bake the clay I’m going to stuff it up. And all my baking trays are huge and would make it very difficult to work with. Thank you again. And I’m sorry I ask a lot of questions. CherieK🦋🌈

How did you get the clay a flat rectangle in the first place? lol
@marisangiovanni5 жыл бұрын
Amazing work!!! Question: how do you stop the clay from chipping or cracking when using? I find Super Sculptey to be not very strong after baking. Do you coat it with anything else to make it stronger?
@ZanVonZed5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Mine doesn't seem to chip after baking. Maybe bake longer? Or the oven temperature is slightly off from the dial indicator..? Some people put an oven thermometer inside the oven to get a more precise temp. Failing that, I've heard Premo is stronger. Varnishes won't help too much if its brittle, unless you coat it with resin. Hope thats somewhat helpful :)
