I never knew who Fantano was until yesterday, didn't think he gave the album a fair chance and was stuck in the Aenima days. But it wasn't until I saw his review of The Raven That Refused To Sing that made me sick to my stomach. He said the album has has terrible audio engineering, sounded like it was made shoe string home studio, songs were passionless, unoriginal, fake mellotron samples, and just regurgitated from actual classic prog, and the guitar and drum were flat. Really? LOL. He gave it a 4 or 5/10. And don't even get me started on his review of Opeth's Pale Communion, were he gave similar negative remarks. Every has their own opinions, but come on. There, right there is the point that most critics have been missing. It's by no means an efficient album, it's not meant to be. It's a slow burn that pretty much begins with an 11-minutes-long intro and ramps up from there. I'm on my 7th spin and I'm still finding new little things to adore. As a huge fan of 10000 Days, it's exactly what I expected. Descending is orgasmic indeed. Strong lyrics and amazing melody.
@paganofthenorth4485 жыл бұрын
One thing I appreciate about modern Tool is the undeniable quality of their music. Instead of having musical moments that reach these high, intense spaces, they do a more mature thing. They make a relaxed calm album, and as someone who is currently neck deep in the black metal genre, it is so refreshing. Instead of following the musical template of the intricate climax so often see in music, they make songs that purposefully don’t reach that height so that the entirety of the song can have these impactful and subtle nuances. And only a band that pays as much attention to detail and quality as Tool could do so.

Fantastic review man ! haha interesting to hear your ranking of the songs, mine's almost flipped from yours, having 7empest, Invincible and Culling Voices as my top 3 :) I agree, Descending is phenomenal too though ! I love the changes when the song kicks in again on another level. It's been really interesting watching reviews as this album has been getting such a mixed reception.. I can kind of understand why, it's got a different feel to it from a lot of Tools stuff, and like you say, it needs you to take the time to properly listen to it, but when you do, man ! it's so rewarding ! I found myself with mixed opinions when I first listened to it which is normal when something is as hyped as this album is..., my thoughts on it felt fluid and shifted with each time I thought about it and when reflecting on every other review/opinion I read... But over the next few days I just kept getting the erg to re-listen to the album, and the more I did, the stronger that erg became, and the more I liked the tracks each time. Within a day or two, I went from liking the album to absolutely loving it ! I think when the initial "reactions" die down and people listen to it for what it is, then the partial hate it's getting will dissipate and the consensus will be that it stands up with the rest of Tool discography as one of their best. ( also your review felt very balanced and professional, it made Fantano's review look like that of a but hurt child in comparison... hence I subscribed ! )

It requires multiple listens. The amount of negativity from casual fans or people not familiar with the band kinda shows the lack of patience music listeners have nowadays. It may not be their best work, but saying "it's boring" makes me laugh. "There are no climaxes". Yeah, there are no climaxes, if you stop listening to the song at the halfway mark. It sounds great, feels great and is shiver inducing in many sections. After 13 years, I can't ask any more. And fuck yeah dude, Descending rocks. My favorite track as well (that "MOBILIZE, STAY ALIVE!" part is one of the best Maynard moments of his career imo.)

@@HowToHideACorpse I disagree. I get why it may be boring to some people, but it fits perfectly in their discography. I consider myself a Tool fan and up to this point I had a great appreciation for their entire track record. Unfortunately I've felt very underwhelmed by Fear Inoculum. After two listens I feel this is not an album I want to go back too, at least not soon. I guess many fans like me expected to see something more bold and fresh, specially after so much time since their last record. Instead the album feels more safe and formulaic, even though it's well executed for what it is. But well, it has been a very divisive album and a lot of people are absolutely loving it, so good for them!

The album isn't supposed to "require" anything. You sound like Apple's response to criticism about the iPhone 4 signal reception issues, where they literally said "Y'all been holding it wrong tho". It either sounds good, or it doesn't. It either works properly, or it doesn't. This is a beautiful album. It's also Tool's worst effort.
@hvitekristesdod5 жыл бұрын
Descending is also one of my favourite tracks on the album. Have you heard David Lynch’s theory about the “duck’s eye scene” in filmmaking? It’s sort of like that. I feel like each of their albums has a “duck’s eye” kind of song actually and Descending is definitely the one on this album. It just hits you right in a certain spot in your brain and causes an expansion of the mind by giving something truly unique and different. Sweat, 4 Degrees, H, Disposition, and Jambi or Intension are what I would pick for the other duck’s eye songs 😎
@kevinlynch22483 жыл бұрын
I agree with you that this album requires the listener to have patience because it is a journey. The songs are long, but that really isn't new for TOOL - "Third Eye", "10,000 Days (Wings Pt.2)", "Rosetta Stoned", "Reflection", "Disgustipated" (sort of), were all songs that predate this new album and each is over ten minutes in length. Plus the band has recorded quite a few other songs that pushed the ten minute mark. So writing long songs isn't something that is new to TOOL and those of us who have been listening to the band since "Opiate" was released, have been waiting for them to record an album like this. In my humble opinion, and this is coming from someone who has listened to them for almost 30 years, this is TOOL's best album yet and I love all of them.

This album is special to me. I've only been actively listening to music for about four years, most bands come in a few ways for me: They broke up (The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Rush, etc.) They haven't released a new record for a few years (Metallica, The Killers, Queen) They just released a record and I got into them through that record (Dream Theater, Muse, Haken) So Tool's Fear Inoculum is the first upcoming album I've really been excited to listen to, and it did not disappoint! Knowing these guys it's probably their last work. I'm still digesting the music...at first I was a bit disapointed maybe because it's been 13 years and I wasn't expecting that much prog. for Tool standards since they usually work with short songs. And first couple of times I could only hear "Schism" in "Pneuma", for instance, and other tracks that really reminds me of their old material like some Jambi riffs in "Invincible" but it's growing and there's a lot going on so hopefuly I'll be able to enjoy this records as much as I enjoy "Lateralus"/"10,000 Days". So far "7empest" is my favorite...I just love it because usually Adam Jones takes the back seat so I was glad he was on the spotlight here ending this record very strong.

Invincible and Descending are definitely my favorites. Invincible reminds me of getting up every single day and going to work even though I'm sore and just don't want to go. It's about that constant struggle and I relate to it so hard. Descending is probably my favorite though. Just all around the better song. The first half is very much dealing with your owm mind and being consumed by it, Followed up with an orgasmic Guitar solo that sums up the emotion that is brought up by the Lyrics. 7empest is the obvious best choice, but it's my number 3. So many things come to mind. But ultimate this song falls flat on it's face for me. It's not a Lateralus or a Rosetta Stoned or even a Third Eye. It's the albums big blow out point and it can't touch the trifecta of Tool's greatest climaxs. It's a great song. But listening to this album Espically after thirteen years. We deserved this song, but I can't help but feel robbed by not getting like I said, a Lateralus or Rosetta Stoned or something along those lines of an absolute trip or a Journey of a song. This song just feels like well a song. Pneuma is a really psychedelic and trippy song and I don't have a lot of love for it. But I do love it. Fear Inoculum is a weird starting song. It's the title track and it embodies the album the most for me. It's trippy but calm amd soothing, Saying hey it's okay to be in this moment and to relax with whatever your struggling with. Culling Voices is just kinda okay. It is forgettable to me. It bridges my two favorite songs to the climax and for that I thank it but other then that It's just kinda okay.

I don’t need more time, fucking Masterpiece! This album for me has actually been more immediate for some reason. Maybe because I have listened to so much more complex & progressive music than before 10k days. And, with them being my absolute favorite band, I just don’t have a favorite album, I love them all for different reasons. So, this isn’t my favorite, just another piece of the puzzle.

Love the Lucid Planet. Not so their other identity Tratas. And while I enjoyed LP, I'm not sure how well they do with a head to head comparison with TOOL. But most TOOL fans will probably appreciate PL's similar aesthetic and atmosphere. Unless they think they hate Fear Inoculum.
@Deauxtje5 жыл бұрын
Gatchamon Not comparable. They sound completely different. LP is very psychedelic and uses Aussie original sounds and Arabic sounds to get that atmospheric ambiance. The teaser for the new album is again much different than the Tool sound. Both are atmospheric hypnotic prog bands with great soundscapes.

I listened to their first album when it came out. It was OK but nowhere near Tool's level, especially the vocals and drums. The bass player also sounds a bit too much like Justin at times. I still listen to it every once in a while but yeah, not even close. I'm curious to hear their evolution on that forthcoming album, though.

I started listening to Tool in 93 . I was 12 and my older brother had Undertow. I liked the songs but didn’t know (at the time) how much impact the band would have in me. AEnima came out and I was like holy shit! Saw them in 98 for the first time and then I’ve seen em every year they came to Pittsburgh since 2001. I can say I very much love this album. Not my favorite but my god it’s great! 7empest is the culmination of this band. It exemplifies every aspect/era of the band in one song which is very hard to do. I’m glad it came out and even if some don’t like it. Too each their own.

It's interesting to hear what songs grab or don't grab people. For me, Invincible and Pneuma are absolute fire.

The lyrics of Descending have a militaristic undertone.Its essentially a call to arms.
@tobias57405 жыл бұрын
Just because there's aline about a call to arms doesn't mean it has to be taken literally.
@mugwump70495 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's never that simple with Maynard. Even Invincible is not really about a literal soldier. Also, I think his father and his own time in the army made him rather antimilitaristic.

My ONLY complaint about the entire album is the re-used Vicarious ringing sampling that is the last sound we hear on "7empest". I don't understand that decision.
@Gatchamon5 жыл бұрын
That's a callback. The Beatles and Sting (when he was still great) made lyrical callbacks.

@@Gatchamon I admit it's a moot detail to nag about, but all I could think when I heard it was, "How many years was it that Danny had to collect new samples?"

7empest is pretty much a sum of their whole career, from Opiate to 10,000 Days. I find it fitting that it ends with something from the latter.

I liked the record. Not Tool's best, but a good record. My favourite song off of it is Pneuma because it reminds me a lot of Schism, which is one of my all-time favourite Tool tracks.

I've listened to this album in the car, on headphones and at home. And I must say, when I listen to it at home with five speakers and a sub-woofer it's a totally different experience. The floor and walls literally shake to the drum and bass. The first time I had it cranked at home I was laughing out loud in amazement to how intense it seemed.

I was thinking the same thing haha ! Anthony's review was a mess ! haha... I love this album, It's hard to rank with their other albums as it's just different.., I wouldn't say it's there worse, but even if it was that's not saying much all all their albums are top tier stuff, it's still phenomenal !

Tool don't have worst records. They have less great records. FI is not one of them.

I have learned to refrain from commentary on Tool’s work until I’ve had the time to really absorb it. The first time I heard 10k days, I was like - that’s it? Few months later, I was ashamed of my amateurish reaction. In the 13 years that followed, I have constantly been discovering something new in that album. I feel the same about this not feeling like a giant leap, but you, and I, and everyone else will be proven wrong by time. Just to add...so on point about bands ending songs where they shouldn’t. At the end of several of Tool’s songs I have been left needing more. Jambi comes to mind.

I had that experience with this album I listen to it once or twice and like it but felt slightly underwhelmed... cut to a day or two later, I don't know what was wrong with me... now I can't control myself I keep coming back to it and am loving it more and more with each listen !

ATOMIC VINYL REVIEWS Yup. 3 days after I wrote that comment, I feel like I understand this album, and I see how it differentiates itself from their previous work. Every new Tool album is an acquired taste, even for their most loyal fans. God damn ear worm Pneuma kept playing in my head last night, kept me up for hours.
