My second recital song for my recital yesterday at @ManhattanSchoolMusic Precollege - I’ve sung before, but my vocal range has expanded so much over the past 10 months that I decided to do it again.
How To Dance in Ohio was a Broadway musical about young adults with autism. One of the characters, Remy, loved to cosplay (why the different characters are mentioned in the song). In this song, Remy talks about how often anything feels possible - until meeting someone who thinks that people with autism are limited in what they can do and all should feel sorry for them. People need to learn that this is not the case. Remy works on educating them about this.
I have autism. Trust me, it has been challenging sometimes, but sometimes it’s because of how others react to it. My brain works differently - but in good ways, too. I am really good with music, and can often sing or play piano by ear quickly. I can learn languages easily. I love math- at 15 I’m just finishing first semester of AP Stats with an A (last year I finished both semesters of AP calculus with an A). I love music theory class at MSM because it kind of combines music and math. Being different isn’t bad; everyone is different in some ways - but some ways are more accepted than others.
So, here is me, singing Nothing At All from How to Dance in Ohio. 💛
