Thank you, Phill. I hope you are feeling better. This is, for me, a timely message. Most people undergoing trials would probably think the distinction between punishment on the one hand and chastisement/correction etc on the other to be a trifle academic. I think Lewis himslef might have allued tot hsi - he certainly says in, "A Grief Observed" that God seemed to be absent in what he he went through after his wife died. On an entirely unrelated note, going back to something you said earleir in the week about obeying God rather than men, I came across a video with Matt Trewhella, "The doctrine of the lesser magistrate." There's a book out by the same name and also the Magdeburg Confession of the 1550s which gave rise to this doctrine. I was vaguely aware of this from another preacher who preaches about natural law, government, Romans 13 etc but it's good to see this teaching making a comeback at least in some parts of the US.

Thank you, I'm glad it was helpful and timely! Yes feeling better now thank you, and likewise. I agree that pain doesn't feel like discipline / correction at the time (c.f. Hebrews 12:5-13), but it's important to make the distinction. A Grief Observed is a very helpful book. I believe at the Reformation they thought a lot about this, as almost everywhere the reformation took hold had some kind of civil disobedience. Francis Schaeffer talks about this in his book 'A Christian Manifesto', which I think I did a podcast about a while back. Yes it's definitely time for the doctrine to make a comeback, to many Christians are ill thought through about questions of government. (I was the same up until recently!)
