Nothing Is Real (Strawberry Fields Forever)
for piano, amplified teapot, recorder, and miniature sound system
Composer: Alvin Lucier
from the performance 'Organic Encounters' - a solo performance of electroacoustic music curated in response to works by artists Machine Dazzle and Gracelee Lawrence featured in the exhibition Soft Serve at Wasserman Projects (Detroit) curated by Alison Wong.
The concert program imagines the 'sound' of the creative process unique to these two artists as it relates to materiality, transformation, and, ultimately, meaning. In this collage of sound, harmonies emerge from the crunchy rhythms of a 3D printing machine, hybrid human/food beings remind us through their oddly dulcet melodies that everything is a construct, and couture is handwoven with the songs of life into a wearable soundtrack.
Celebrating nonconformity, Justin performs not only on piano but on an unusual assemblage of other instruments, including the air-pumped harmonium, amplified teapots, and synthesizer. The works for piano look to redefine the way we imagine the instrument to sound and be played. One way incorporates DIY mechanical percussion devices as a physical extension of the piano and another by embedding 'transparent electronics' within the body of the instrument as the digital and physical become one entity.
Justin Snyder is a Yamaha Artist. Thank you to Yamaha Artist Services for providing the Yamaha CFX piano for this performance.
