my girlfriend of four years broke things off with me. She wanted a friendship but I couldn’t do it... too many memories too much time together. She’s been as much of a friend as she was a lover and it’s strange not having her there in my life anymore. This song hits deep. We were high school sweethearts and together so long that we thought we had a bright future together, the relationship used to be almost perfect. The brightest flame burns fast. Many said we wouldn’t last either, we were highschool sweethearts and that’s rare; but everything was so beautiful and perfect that we didn’t think that could happen. They were right. We kept going in circles trying everything to hold onto that love from the first 3 and a half years.. we broke ourselves in many ways and were so scared of losing what he had that we pushed each other away. I told her “I know what you’re thinking of doing” and she told me “that’s probably for the best”, that was it. Near the end I could tell she wanted to break things off, I couldn’t see forever in her eyes. I don’t think I’ll ever forget the times me and her shared and I’m afraid to love anyone that passionately again; but I’ll heal, I have to.

You will make it through. I went through almost the same thing a couple years ago. We were young had a kid and stayed together for four years until she just decided it wasnt going to work and left one day and just moved in with someone else and moved on with her life while I slowly tried to pick up the pieces of mine. But its been two years now and we are actually good friends I came to the realization that I just had to let her be happy with her life just as I needed to be happy with mine. I am currently working on building a stable relationship while also keeping my son and his mom a part of my life. Its very hard and we get into it every now and then but i know one day I will have the family I need even if its not the one im looking for right now. Life has a way of working things out with time.

Hey. I'm sorry you're going through this. My soon-to-be ex husband and I were high school sweethearts; married 17 years, together 23. We're in the middle of a painful divorce. He had a long-term affair with a coworker. He's been vicious, thorough, and complete. whoever he is now, he's so far away from the person I had created him to be in my head and heart, he's a stranger to me now. And, frankly, as deeply as I have loved him, if I met him today, i wouldn't want to be friends with this emotionally bankrupted, deceptive person. Mourning the loss of the relationship as it actually was, as well as how I'd imagined it to be, AND everything I eagerly planned for our shared futures, has been an unavoidable, nonlinear process I am still navigating on a day to day basis. Sharing your lives together and planning your shared futures creates a planet full of potential triggers to remind you of *anything.* Maybe a scene on a tv show reminds you of the amazing vacation you took and you feel your heart squeeze at the happy memory now being rushed on by the current heartaches, but you want to hold onto some happiness. It can't ALL be a waste. Then in my case, maybe today is the day my mind creates movies for everything that ever happened between him and his girlfriend while it was also happening to me (or worse, when it wasn't and I didn't understand why). I'm still extremely fresh into this myself and our paths are different but unfortunately we've arrived at the same clearing. My best advice is to focus harder on yourself than you ever have. Restart old hobbies you let go or start one you put off for whatever reason. Take a trip to that place you wanted to go to; solo trips are food for the soul. Surround yourself with support people in real life and let them love you, even when you're not feeling very lovable. Go to therapy if you're not already. Nobody's perfect and we all develop maladaptive bullshit. Treat mental health with regular check ups similarly to your medical physicals. Exercise the anxiety away and stay away from booze and drugs during this time. Even if you don't have issues with restraint, you're not your normal clear-headed self right now and substances suddenly become REALLY appealing. I've also found journaling to be helpful right now for a variety of reasons I didn't expect. Sorry for the novella. Anything else I could say will sound like the typical platitudes and I hate that. Still, be kind and gentle with yourself right now and focus on who *you are becoming* more than who you are today. Today's person isn't shit compared to who you're becoming. So become them. Hugs.

@@SelinaBradley This meant a lot, and I for one love to read; so seeing your story and kind words goes a long way. As an update- I have learned more of an illness I have (that I originally pushed away), it is called agoraphobia. I also went through a bad alcohol binge a couple months ago that almost got really bad. I'm sad to say that I increased the cigarettes I smoke too, something still bothering me. I was kicked out of a house shared with roommates, and lost my job as well. In many ways I am still getting better. It's very slow but it's getting there. I'm trying and I refuse to give up; therefore these kind words from everyone here help more than you all think.

I've listened to this song on repeat for weeks now and my heart is shattered into pieces. A few months back I met who I believed to be the man of my dreams. We fell in love with each other so quickly and would talk about our future together often. We'd stay up late under the stars just talking. Tackling all of life's difficulties, together. In the past few weeks he has been emotionally distant and hardly affectionate. He just told me he no longer is in love with me and isn't ready for the type of commitment I am looking for. I'm beyond heartbroken and this song is so insanely accurate to our situation and how I feel.

This band lyrically is one of the best in freaking decades man. They have SO much more of substance to actually say than the VAST, VAST majority of most musicians today. Their music, while good, I'm not a huge fan of, but the words and messages they put in their music is what the music industry today is seriously anemically lacking.

This song is a good place to vent. Nothing More's song God Went North helped with the passing of my mom due to illness as Jonny Hawkins went through the same ordeal. This song has helped me put my last relationship into perspective. This was the major breakup song for me. Nothing More helped to inspire me to become a musician among many other bands but Nothing More has always been in your face and aggressive but is also the type of band to be real about real struggles. This song helped to put to the rest the struggles of my last relationship. The constant trying to figure out where I stand, the constant stress over trying to decide a future, and me feeling like I was the only one deciding. The biggest struggle was this: My last girlfriend came out to me as gay, which I didn't have a problem with, it was like: "Okay, I guess it's real now." It was a fear of mine that she would actually turn out to be gay when she started out as bisexual at the beginning of our relationship. I felt every emotion: anger, resentment, depression, disgust, betrayal etc. I had to conclude that this was just how she is and will forever be. She even voiced her "leaning more gay" experience to me when she would drop hints to me. I really just had hoped it was a phase and she would come back around on her own time and it would make us closer but that never happened. ( I want to state that some of my best friends are gay and that's not an issue I have, I would step up if someone gave them shit for being gay) It was ultimately the feeling of: "If you knew why didn't you break it off sooner instead of stringing me along?" I sunk into a bad hole of drinking and not taking care of myself and that landed me in the hospital. I recovered slowly from that. I worked through the hard emotions and we compromised on a friendship cause of all we went through together. We've hung out 3 times and I can't get over the feeling I have of "This isn't right." She has plans of her own and I wish her nothing but the best and hope she finds someone who can give her the world but it still kinda hurts that it can't be me who gives her the world. I could ramble about this for hours but if this is someone's exact situation just know it wasn't your fault and it never was. Some people are just drawn to others of the same sex and it happens. You can do everything right but still be let down and disappointed. If you are struggling with this same experience, don't deal with it alone, lean on friends, scream loud at times in anger, destroy doors with axes, write about it in song form of poetry, do anything to get the feelings out. I am happy to say as of now, I have a new girlfriend who has a wonderful baby girl who I have adopted and treat like my own child ( even though I have no previous kids). A relationship ending isn't the end but a new beginning. It's a chance to chase dreams, meet new people, and learn about the world around you. You will heal and meet someone new. This someone might even be your forever person.

[Verse 1] We used to dream We used to name the stars Tracing futures lying in the dark They said we'd never last The brightest flame burns fast We say words But we don't talk anymore [Chorus] Tonight we're growing closer Closer to the end Were we fools for each other Or fools for falling in? Are we looking at forever? 'Cause I don't see it in your eyes Have you had enough or do we try again? The glass was half full when we stopped pouring in So just say when [Verse 2] I see that sunset in your eyes again I got that sinking, sinking, same feeling They said we'd never last And they were right, but I can't help looking back [Chorus] Tonight we're growing closer Closer to the end Were we fools for each other Or fools for falling in? Are we looking at forever? 'Cause I don't see it in your eyes Have you had enough or do we try again? The glass was half full when we stopped pouring in So just say when [Bridge] Oh, we keep circling; it never ends We keep breaking down but never bend Oh, we've been half alive We've been half alive for way too long [Chorus] Tonight we're growing closer Closer to the end Were we fools for each other Or fools for falling in? Are we looking at forever? 'Cause I don't see it in your eyes Have you had enough or do we try again? The glass was half full when we stopped pouring in So just say when So just say when

The thing I love about this song is that they keep it simple. Any other band and we'd have the super orchestral strings accompanying them to really drive home that feeling of melancholy. But we don't get that here and the song is so much more poignant and personal for it. A song with a message that doesn't get lost in overproduction or trying to be something it isn't. Few things are as heart-wrenching as being a part of a long relationship and being able to consciously watch it falling apart.

Ok so me personally i like the acoustic version better than this one. Idk it seems to speak louder but then again it could be because thats the way i heard it for the first 20 times i listened to it. I dont think ill ever get burned out on this song. That being said, the first time i heard this song was just a couple weeks ago. Today is Xmas 2023, better late than never! I could've easily pulled my truck over and bawled my eyes out when it was over. Music is a huge deal in my life. Im not the sensitive guy in the world but i do have feelings and emotions like anybody else. This song hit me like no other song has in my whole life. Everybody out there will or already has gone thru and felt the same way he has in one way or the other. And my god does he make you feel like you're going thru it everytime you listen to this song. My mind is still completely blown away

I really like this song. I'd like to hear a lot more songs like this from Nothing More (though I'm also partial to "Do You Really Want It" and "Go to War," of course)...this one really hits hard, and it's beautifully done.

I suppose it's when you think to yourself , do I love this person? I feel like I'm very well on my way to the truth of that. However, I got my heart broken without the words ever passing across my lips. At least it was for me. I found this song today and I've played it so many times. 😢
