My husband works in the egg industry that supplies egg product to Hersheys, Burger King and Taco Bell among others. His company just lost 50-100 workers (and that number is growing) over October and November 2024 because the workers came here from Mexico through a 3rd party recruitment agency that was supposed to legally set up their work visa documentation but didn't. These were really hard working people with families who didn't complain if they had to work 7 days a week, got their jobs done quickly and correctly, and did manual labor (cleaning, inspecting eggs, and working with chickens) in a smelly workplace that most Americans don't want to do for $12-19 an hour. Expect your holiday chocolates, eggs, breakfast sandwiches, and protein shakes to get more expensive now even without the tariffs as these companies have to increase wages even more to convince Americans to take these jobs.

Doh! The US Government sets the tariff on imported goods, then the USG collects the tariffs from US companies when the products enter the country. The USG banks the tariff money, and then uses it to pay subsidies to a few news worthy business affected badly by the tariffs. The rest of the money the USG collects in tariffs, is used to replace the reduction of sales taxes collected in a shrinking economy. As people stop buying more expensive products. If there is any money left over, it will then be used to fund tax reductions for the rich. If not, they will reduce USG spending on benefits even more, to release money to pay off their rich supporters.

@MYOB100 oh my, have you checked the price of popcorn lately? I just wanted some ordinary popcorn like before microwave popcorn was invented. I was surprised. But I'm still going to get some soon. It's crispier than the microwave stuff the way I make it. Get a huge pot, cover the bottom with kernels and oil and pop it until it stops shooting out of the pot. That's when you take the top off and pop the rest. That lets out the steam so the kernels come out much crisper. And you can stir it while popping so it doesn't burn. But it might end up cheaper than the microwave stuff. I have figured the cost. I just like it being crispier.

That Animal Farm analogy is brilliant! It also however gives us little hope for the future. Because like that first young woman who doesn't even see why her mother felt the need to uninvite her, most MAGA voters will forever justify their loyalty to Trump with ever new excuses and belittle those who are rightfully afraid of him. And Trump makes it easy for them, too. As more and more people learn what tariffs actually are and how they work, he now starts to claim that instead of lowering prices they are a tool to make the other countries close their borders to criminals and drugs (gotta tell me how many drugs and criminals he thinks are coming in from Canada but nevermind). The human psyche is hardwired to protect itself and anyone who has fallen deep enough into the MAGA trap will do whatever it takes to justify even their own suffering. So even if Trump truly exerts all his plans (and I'm not so sure anymore because probably the only good thing about him is that he is greedy before anything else, his plans aren't driven by racism - although he definitely is racist - but by lust for money) they WILL find ways to defend him and their own choices. FAFO season has started, and it does feel good to see some people finally understand what we've been trying to explain to them for months, but sadly I do think that overall the educational effect on society will remain much too small.
